    Kitty Litter

Does anyone know how I can get the two cats in my household to use the new crystal kitty litter over the old KatzLoo stuff ?

Should I just lock them up in a small room with water and the kitty litter so that they are forced to use it (overnight - when I'm sleeping only) ?

The KatzLoo kitty litter wasn't really working due to the humidity.

That might work, but i don't know haow they'd feel locked up all night, I know my cat would be howling most of the night, I can't sleep when she does that crap! But if they don't, then you can do that.

Another thing to try would be to mix the old brand of litter with some of the new brand of litter, so they can gradually get use to the new brand.

I've run out of the old brand.

I'll try locking them up with the Kitty Litter separately... one cat tonight, the other cat the next night.

Hmm... I'm going to buy a bag of the KatzLoo litter and gradually introduce the new litter to them.... mix it up... first the 'old' kitty litter will predominate (75/25) in the first week, the second week I will add more of the new crystal kitty litter so it is around 50/50 ratio... and the third week hopefully they will be used to the crystal kitty litter so that I can increase the new litter to 75/25 before swapping over 100% to the new one.

I just didn't think ... since they are both seniors.. it's going to take time for either of them to change their ways... *sigh*

that's really the only way to do it, goldcoastgirl. if they refuse to use the new litter and you lock them up without a choice, they might just go on the floor. *(~shudders~)* gradual introduction works wonders, though. cats don't like change.

Does this mean that you tried locking one up and it went badly?

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I'm not locking any of them up. I didn't buy the KatzLoo stuff and just bough some cheap 'Home Brand' type of litter that is similiar in texture and look to the KatzLoo. I have been mixing that 'clay' litter with the 'crystal' litter... it's around the 50/50 mark.. and they seem to use it okay.

Next week I will add more crystal litter than clay before doing away with the clay altogether.

If they don't like the crystal litter (when I do away with the clay litter in week 3 - I'm in week one atm) then I will go back to mixing it so that they use it.

Don't lock them up! They will get territorial. When changing cat litters, put a cup or two of the new stuff on bottom, then the old stuff on top. Next change, halph of the new on bottom, the old on top, then the next, use only the new, and put a hand full of the old on top. It takes 3 times to change it, but it is worth it to not have cats getting their sent every wear when they pee in the house.
The cristal litter is soooo worth it to make the change, smell wise, although I've found fresh step cat litter(the non clumping, non scoop, regular bag)works just as good if changed weekly- and looks a lot less gross then the yellow crystals...eww.

oh duh.^^^ Thats what your doing. Have you thought of just training them to use the toilet? Its very easy. you just have to watch to keep the seet up, and clean it off every other day. If there was less people in my house I would do that. There are kits you can buy from pet stores that help in the training aspect of it.

    Toilet Training Cats @ http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html

I have had this site bookmarked for YEARS. I know how to Toilet train them however they are both seniors. Mine is 13 years of age and my flatmate's cat is (we think) 3-4 years younger ( my cats )

Believe me, I tried to start this -- Begin by moving the cat's current litter box from wherever it is to one side of the toilet. -- and couldn't even get past this stage!

I've attached two images - how the toilet looks like normally and what it looks like with the current kitty litter box next to it. As you can see.. there isn't that much room. My flatmate's cat has no qualms with pissing on the carpet instead of being squashed into the kitty litter (he's "large boned" compared to my skinny cat who has plenty of room).

I gave up on that idea as they are too old and my toilet isn't well suited to toilet training a cat.
