Default Michelle Kwan and the Olympics

Michelle is going to her third Olympics!!! She had to petition the U.S. figure skating committe to go due to her injury. As a fan of Michelle Kwan I really hope that the third time is the charm for her. Anyone else follow Ice skating? Do you think Kwan deserves the chance to go to the Olympics even though she did not compete in the Nationals?

I can't wait for the Olympics! I've always been a fan of Michelle. I think she deserves to be there, Nationals or not. She's proven her worth time and time again.

Hard working girl. Those Koreans, you gotta give it to them....I worked for Koreans and they can't be stopped. She'll be on a box of Wheaties before you know it.

Michelle Kwan was born and raised in California. Her parents are of Chinese ancestry. She placed third in the last olympics and second in the one before that. She has won many U.S and World figure skating chapionships, and is the most decorated figure skater in the world right now.
I really hope she recovers in time to do well in Turin.

Michelle Kwan sat out the U.S. nationals due to injury. *Usually* the top three finishers at nationals are nominated for the Olympics, but there are special cases.

Ironically enough, Kwan was the odd one out for the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics when Nancy Kerrigan petitioned to be included on the Olympic team after getting whacked on the knee by Tonya Harding's accomplice. (In the end, neither of them won gold, and it led to Nancy's "This is sooo cowny" line during a parade at Walt Disney World celebrating her silver medal.)

While I think Michele Kwan is a great skater I don't think she should be going to the Olympics. Injuring yourself and not being able to compete is a chance you take in any sport.

What about Emily Hughes? She's trained hard and should be going, is this fair to her?

I agree with Susan, I think Michelle is a great skater, but there are tons of girls that didn't go to nationals, and they don't get to go to the Olympics. I was a figure skater, only for about a year or 2, but hell, I wouldn't mind being in the olympics! Well, no, not really, but the point is that she didn't go to nationals because she was hurt, so she shouldn't get to go to the Olympics.

Eh, life goes on either way!

^I've been watching Emily Hughes...and frankly, I'm not at all impressed. She's got good jumps and good form, but no PASSION that shows through. She's very mechanical. Michelle Kwan's passion for skating shows in her routines.

I think they made the right choice to put Kwan in...and, if she cannot do it, then Emily Hughes will step in. IMHO, though, Kwan is by far the better choice over Hughes.

It seems, lately, that "tricks" are outdoing the "passion" for skating. I still watch skating, but it's just not the same. Even the couples skating has lost a lot. My all time couples fave is Gordeeva and Grinkov. Now, THAT was skating...along with Katerina Witt, Oksana Baiul, Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano...they were all fabulous skaters with lots of passion...now, it's just fabulous skaters.
