Default really simple music editing program?

    Yo, DJs,

what do you use when you want to alter a song before burning it on to a disc; I'm not talking about full-on remixing, just cutting off superlong intros/outros. Very basic. Perhaps you will tell me, 'Susan, you idiot, you can do this in iTunes,' but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. I just want to trim the tracks so I don't have to go to the DJ and say, "Oh, play me track 14, but it has a long intro, so could you cue it up to 0:23? And also please don't give me any strobe lights, they make me dizzy."

Thanks! And hooray for the DJs at my new club in Portland who are totally useful!

Well, I was about to post a similar thread, lol--but you beat me to it! Nice to see you in here again, BTW...

You could try WinAmp, a really good DJ I know uses this at work on his laptop, and it's supposedly free online. But I don't know if it will enable you to edit out the beginning or end for burning (you can cue up songs in a club, so probably.

A friend of mine knows I have been waiting to get a laptop for a few weeks now, and gave me a good program on a disc, but I have misplaced it. I need to get the damned laptop soon (I am being very patient and really shopping around), because I have been walking around with over a grand in cash--inthis town, not a great idea, lol.

But there is one I have my eye on that has a 100 Gigabyte hard drive that looks pretty good, and I think I'll be choosing that one.

I'll bet Mr. C will know, since he has burned discs for dollar dances (minute long or less cuts of various songs).

You're actually going to need something that can edit the waveform. Most audio you will download off the net will be in .mp3 format and most modern audio editors will be able to load and resave in this format. You can spend some money and get something rather on the high-end such as Adobe Audition although for basic audio editing I suggest Blaze Audio Wave Creator. You can download this at:

    http://www.download.com/Blaze-Audio-...ml?tag=lst-0-5

This software is completely free and comes with a CD Ripper too if you want to pull songs off of a CD you already own. I think it's an option that you will have to download during the install, but it's worth it. During the install, when you are prompted if you would like to download the additional utilities, say "yes".

If you are wanting to edit something you go off Itunes though, it's going to be a bit more complicated. Apple, being the schmucks that they are, encode their .mp3 files into a format they created .mp4. You can't edit those, so you will have to make an audio CD with that song and then rip the song back off the CD and save it as a .wav or .mp3 file that you can edit.

Most of what I have was ripped from my own cds and I think I've bought one song ever from Itunes. I'll try that Blaze Audio, DW, thanks!

I like Goldwave. Not too much learning to make simple edits. Seems to read everything except Realaudio stuff.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

Back in my previous life when I was a magician, I used to mix my own music for shows and such all the time so I learned a lot about audio editing. While I'm no expert by far, I've certainly learned a few things along the way. The first computer I used to work with aduio on was my Amiga 3000 back in 1990. Sheesh...I think my printer has more horsepower now than that computer did back then.

I've trimmed files with Audacity, which is free. See http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

What's a bit confusing is that you also need to download the free LAME encoder file in order to get Audacity to export files as MP3. They don't make that fact real obvious on the main web pages. See http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help...all&i=lame-mp3

It's also somewhat non-intuitive that, to save files as MP3 to a disk or folder, you need to choose the Export MP3 function, instead of Save which saves as a proprietary format mainly for editing purposes.

That makes it sound messed up, but it's not. I just wanted to point out a coupla points I found to be easier once I understood them.

I had a friend who shortend all my songs for my partys. He made them fade too, so it sounded like it was really ending.

You can set "start" and "stop" times to all your songs in iTunes. So basically, you can start and end the song wherever you want? Open iTunes, highlight the song you want to edit, click on "file", then "get info", and then "options". However, I'm not sure if these settings will carry over once you burn the CD? Try it and see what happens??
