Shave in the direction of the hair growth, use a new razor every time (I like the Mach 3), after patting the area dry apply a chemical exfoliator. I use Natura Bisse's Glycoskin, it contains 20% glycolic acid, but you can find less expensive products containg AHA, BHA, glycolic or retiynol at the drug store. This will sting a little when you apply it, that sensation will go away after about a week. It will help keep ingrown hairs and red bumps at bay.

wax. if you're like me (sicilian), it's genetics, and the best razor/cream/aftershave treatment in the world won't help. in 4 hours, it itches, in 7 hours, you can see it.
be the change you wish to see in the world....

One of my friends said that she shaves with baby oil instead of shave gel, and she never gets razor bumps. I've never tried it, but it seems to work for her. When I shave, I shave downward (in the direction of hair growth) or sideways or diagonal to get a closer shave, but never up against the direction of hair growth.
Yep, baby oil is an old model's trick for quick bikini shaves.
Always a new razor- do not be putting some nasty old rusty razor next to your precious bits
And powder your cookie- if you live in hot climates, the temps will make your "bikini bottom" a place for bacteria to cause skin irritation
