    Default Shpongle?

I've got an audition next week, and I assume I need to bring my own music. (yes? no?) I really want to use something unique. I would love to use something by Shpongle or Infected Mushroom (both sort of a techno/electronica/world music mishmash)...or maybe something off of Solarium/Delerium (club remixes of Cirque du Soleil pieces).

Would that be okay, or would it be TOO different to work? Opinions?

Good God, I wish you were auditioning in my club--this is my favorite kind of music--and most dancers can't handle it. Nor will most clubs/DJs ever play it--but I will, lol...

I'd say check out the clientele before you try it--if they are a bunch of meathead rockers or hip-hop guys, forget it. Nothing against rock or hip-hop, I like it too--but it's nice to display some distinction now and then.

But if they seem to have a fair admixture of people with some taste and style in the club--why not?

Hell, I played a Delerium track for a stunningly beautiful dancer in my club (not renowned for having a classy customer mix, lol) one night a while back, and even the surfer punks were slack-jawed and drooling...

Maybe give Velvet Acid Christ "Slut" a try (don't take offense, it's not like it sounds at all, though perhaps heavier than what you are after), or maybe the Delerium remixes of "Silence" or "Fear" (the slower remixes, not that Tiesto sh*t). I play these all the time with great success.

The key to success might be to play what the crowd ordinarily goes for first--to get their attention--then hit 'em with the really cool song.

I don't know what your skill level or appearance is like, but one thing I have learned--if a woman is beautiful and can dance like a dream, she can pull off almost anything she wants to, anywhere she wants.

Later--as far as bringing your own music--it depends on the club rules and the DJ. If the DJ is an arrogant jerk (as most of them seem to be around my area), good luck getting him to play anything cool. But I would at least try to do it that way--assuming you have some confidence the customer base will appreciate what you are trying to use.

    Thanks! That helps.

I will check out the song you suggested; I've heard some VAC, but not that one. I could stand to have some heavier music in my repertoire, but don't really know where to start for that sort of thing.

One of my friends in CA gets away with musical murder onstage--she's danced to Streetlight Manifesto, Operatica, System of Down...yet somehow it works.

hmm...this is going to be an adventure. I'm 4'11", 90 lbs, B cup, auburn hair to halfway down my back, people mistake me for still being in high school (and i love that, lol). As for skills...I've been doing contortion since age 14 (hence the fascination with Cirque) and taken ballet for seven years...but I'm not sure how well that sort of dance training will prepare me for stage work! We'll see

Shpongle is far and away my absolute favorite electronica/trance group. Just be aware that some of their music will need some trimming because most of their songs are pretty long. I was just listening to them the other night and even thought that their song the The Nebbish Route would be great to dance to...not too fast, not too slow and very unique sounding. It's also only about 3.5 minutes too so not too long. Another great one that is short you might want to look into is Outer Shpongolia. Both are on the Nothing Lasts But Nothing Is Lost album.

I can always tell if a woman has had a 'serious' dance background, and it always helps, usually a great deal--same thing with gymnastics--but I have yet to see someone with contortion experience! Sounds like a winner to me...

I predict great success for you.

I have to go get ready for work right now, but when I get back late tonight, I'll see what I can do about more suggestions.

Do you like Jazz at all? There's some really good obscure stuff I love to play for a very few unique and talented dancers, and from the sounds of it, you'll fit.

Miles Davis is my favorite jazz to play, but you have to be really careful about cueing it up.

And DW, thanks for the input!

I do like jazz. ^_^ And am definitely interested in recommendations for heavier, rock-type music...

Country/bluegrass is pretty much the only genre of music I've heard that I don't enjoy to some degree...other than that, I'll listen to (and dance to) anything.

You might like the remixes of "Spente le Stelle", "Ira de Dio" and "la notte etterna" (Emma Shapplin) and "Harem" (Sarah Brightman)...and the Sasha Lazard album "The Myth of Red".

I'm still waiting for some brilliant DJ to make some mixes of tracks from "Atylantos". That would be amazing. But I digress. Hope you're having a good night at work!

DW: Actually, Outer Shpongolia is exactly what I had in mind!

Don't feel bad, I do that all the time...

It's allowed in here, especially when you have come up with these intriguing suggestions.

Is "Atylantos" a Circe du Solei CD?

I am so tired from a rough night at work that I will have to wait until tomorrow to think of some more ideas for you--but I will tell you that you should give Miles Davis "He Loved Him Madly" a listen--but if you use it you have to cue it in about 4 1/2 minutes into it, or else things could get very rough for you, lol! It's from the "Panthalassa" CD. I am dying to use something from his "Bitches Brew" CD, but I keep forgetting to pick it up.

You might also like "Variations sur Emma Peel" by Grand Tourism, it's got a powerful sound with a very sultry bit of trumpet mixed in.

Nope, Atylantos isn't Cirque...it's another bout of amazingness by Jean-Patrick Capdevielle, but it isn't available in the US. I had to spend almost $40 to get it from the French version of amazon.com, but it was worth every penny.
