    Default tummy question

So my new years resolution was to work out. I actually started it during december sometime. Anyways since I have I've gained 8lbs (not that I mind at all I could have used a few more pounds, and I know that whole muscle weighs more than fat thing).

Alright soooo my tummy looks kind of pregnant. Maybe I was just bloated or something, my mom even made a comment about me looking preggers over the weekend. Today it doesn't look so bad. But some of the girls at my day job said that it could be from working out. 2 said that if you inhale when your'e supposed to exhale and vice versa while exercising you can build the muscles out the wrong way, and make your tummy puff up. Another girl said that if you don't keep your tummy muscles sucked in while working out that can also have them puff out more.

I know for a fact that I am NOT pregnant (scientifically not possible...) but has anyone heard anything like this? What can I do to correct it and not look like I'm 3 months with child?

yes you should keep your "belly button pulled towards your spine". the very BEST exercises for tummy is windsor pilates. I gain weight in my stomach area, not in my hips/thighs, so if i don't pull my muscles tight and keep them contracted (i've done that since i was about 12), then I look about 4 months pregnant. If you do the 20 minute video every day, you'll lose inches FAST..I lost 1 1/2 inches in my first week of doing it!

I have that issue too. Is it hard or soft when you push on it? Mine is hard and it's localized in the front-middle, and I'm not pregnant either.

I just stopped eating things that give me gas. The huge culprit was protein shakes so I cut those way down. Since I've been eating healthier, if I have something that's very processed or salty (and a lot more of it than I should have!) then I get gas again. And overdosing on fruit gives it to me too.

This has helped. I was mortified when a girl at work was spreading a rumor that I was 4 months pregnant and guys were believing it! I'm flat now and it's only about 2 week later.

When you're working out, you're supposed to exhale when you're lifting the weights up and inhale on release. If you're using machines an easy way to remember is you exhale when the weights go up, kind of like you're blowing them up and then inhale on the way down like you're sucking them down. Make sense? lol.

Also, try this excersise. If you do it right, your tummy will be down in literally 2 days or so. For me, this has been the ONLY thing that flattened my pooch. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/ms-fit5.htm

No air, empty your lungs as much as possible and then hold and pull your tummy in. It should look concave (and kinda gross really) if you're doing it right.

EXhale on the EXertion and Inhale on the release.

When you do crunches, you really need to concentrate on pulling the "navel to spine". Not focusing on this will cause you to build really strong abs, but in the bowl shape instead of more flat. In fact, in your every day waking life, you should be pulling navel to spine. Doing that makes you look taller, leaner, and supports your upper body as well as your back (you know those lower back pains? When you keep the navel to spine action engaged, that pain will go away).

So walk around, every chance you get reminding yourself "Navel to Spine". And, of course, Don't just exhale on the exertion, but you should actually FEEL your abs contract.

If you are talking about your lower abdomen being swollen, I can understand that completely. I have endometriosis pretty severely and have had 7 operations for it. I also use to be overweight. Even when I was overweight I carried most of it in my lower abdomen. I think it was because of the endometriosis combined with constipation. I am now on the pill and it helps a lot with the endo. If I haven't "went" in a few days I try to eat plenty of fruits and drink lots of water to get things moving along. I started dancing in 2002. I have been doing pilates faithfully 3x weekly for 2 years and have seen very noticeable results. My lower abdomen is still not washboard flat but it's looks remarkably different than it use to. Occassionally, when I bend over I can see some loose skin hanging there. I have thought about getting something done about it but I only weigh 108 lbs. They'd probably laugh at me plus when you get tummy tuck it leaves a huge scar across your bikini line. Try pilates 30 minutes a day three times a week. In a couple of weeks you'll start noticing a difference.

You can do crunches every day. However, while doing all of this...make sure you are NOT pushing the small of your back into the floor. You should be maintaining "proper alignment" while doing the exercises. Your spine, when you lay down, will touch the floor by your butt and upper back. You should be able to slide your hand under your lower back. KEEP it that way when you are doing crunches.

Those of you that are doing it should take before & after measurements so we can see your progress!

Thanks for all the advice - good to know this is a fixable and seemingly fairly common thing. Emily - what you said about gas - I think that may be it - or at least part of it, I'm on anti depressants and since of started that pill all I do is sleep and..pass gas. I do pilates almost every day, but not to lose weight or inches - just to tone up a little.

Peppermint tea & candy is good for gas issues & cheap too.

I've accepted my little tummy- it's smaller now due to less drinking, but all the ladies in my family have little potbellies. Oh well.

Me me! What a great exercise. I've been doing it for awhile now and can really see a difference. I was already doing lots of crunches but this vacuum thing really adds something to an ab workout. I do a concentrated workout 3 times each week and then, like the site says to try, do it in my car when I'm sitting in rushhour traffic too. If only more exercises were as effective when going 10 miles an hour in LA traffic. I'd be a Supermodel!
