    Default hiring a personal trainer

    Ok heres the deal.
I go to 24hr and personally I really dont like their trainers. Most are inexperienced and always push you to buy the bigger package.
They told me it was 570 = 6 sessions and .....800 = 9 sessions on up. $95-88 a session?? I read somewhere the average price for a PT is $50/hr with the spectrum being $35-100/hr.

Where can I find a better qualified personal trainer?

Trainers are good for plateaus...they are good when you are doing new routines, to ensure that you are utilizing proper form (which is the most important aspect of weight lifting). There are lots of personal trainers that do freelance work. You may possibly be spending the $80+ dollars per session, but they are very good. As opposed to the trainers who are in the club and are more interested in the commission than they are in your workout. I hired a trainer once a couple of years ago because I needed help on my form. He blew me off 2 different times...of course my fees were already paid...

Not every trainer is like this, but having been in the industry for so long, it is my observation that if you want a good, quality, dependable trainer...go find a freelancer. Get references...do an interview. That will be money well spent. They don't get paid by the hour by the club, so they really work hard to keep their clients happy. They also don't have "packages" to sell and will be more honest about what you need to do without trying to get you to buy more stuff...

    Anywho...

What are his/her references? That is A LOT to be charging for personal training. I live in a place where cost of living is high and the trainer I had charged 60 an hour (she was 45 and had a body of stone). Unfornuately, she started making me look like her in which I wanted definition but not big muscles. She didn't do any thing for me I couldn't do for myself. Although, I did learn how to use the machines properly and some various exercises through her I now do on my own.

Yes, Im still at a plateau. Learning to run is one of my plans this year.
I dont mind the cash but for the service and (commision push at 24hr) I was very reluctant at the trainers lack luster emotion to my fitness goals. I just figure well the earlier the better so I can be better faster.
Thanks VG and Greenlady for the ideas for an interview. Ive already found some people on craigslist.

If you stick with a trainer long enough, they will probably give you a break. I see mine 2x a week and have been doing that for the past 8 months and obviously he knows I'm not going anywhere. He gives me a lot of sessions free...maybe like 1 out of 5.

I agree that finding a contracotr trainer will save you some money. The one I have works for my gym and I believe he told me he gets 2/3 of the money clients play the club. So if you cut out the club, you can probably get one for less.

The problem is that the best trainers are booked up and the crappy ones are the ones with all the openings. I had to fire one before I got this one. Plus the club will hold the trainer accountable for being there and being certified.

My trainer is $35/session. I work out with a group. I don't think it's worth $80 or more.

At that price (including your gym membership), they should be offering oral after your workout...but I digress...

VG is right; find a freelancer and don't get fleeced by commission-oriented employees.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

When I first started working out, I paid a trainer $30 per session, and I saw him once a week. I basically just needed him to show me how to use all the machines, and what exercises I should be doing for the results I wanted. Now I only see him once a month to check in with him and see if I should be doing anything differently. I guess it depends on where you live, but $25-50 per session around here is normal.
