So I started my first day of Argument/ Debate class. As an opening exercise, we were asked to right an "I believe" statement that could be argued from more than one side. My statement was "I believe prostitution should be legalized." The teacher read all of the statements to the class... other student statement examples were i believe in abortion rights and i believe death penalty is wrong. When my statement was read, everyone started to laugh including the teacher. Roaring laughter. The teacher made a funny comment saying " this belief can go along with the last one" because the last statement was "i beleive life should always be fun." His comment was funny and i did not really care about the laughing. Anyway, after these anonomous statements were read, we had to write them all down and guess who had which beliefs. I heard a few comments on my belief, while we were in groups trying to guess eachother's(before i revealed it was my statement.)No comments that were too offending... but comments that made me wonder why this issue is not taken as serious. I heard people joking/laughing in their groups, asking who has this statement, and then when i went up to them and said it was my statement they got all serious. I just wonder why sexual issues are still laughed upon at times? Sexual topics should be more comfortable for people by 2006. This also is not my first laughing experiance. In a public speaking class, we had to throw out speech topics. When i mentioned my topic of the exotic dance industry,,,, again i experianced ROARING laughter. I did not have the courage to go along with my topic back then, but that was two years ago. I would do it now in a heartbeat because i am much more comfortable in my beliefs/interests. Being in the dance industy, i still have an open mind and respect for those who choose to prostitute in the correct establisments for that purpous. I also have a sensitive spot for troubled streetwalkers(I must have watched too many horrible "COPS" shows where they act all high and mighty while they cuff up a troubled prostitute." Regardless, i respect the fact that some do not agree with the legalization... which is why i considered my statement to be very valid. While it still is valid... i just do not see why the issue needed to be laughed at. I was not offended, just sort of surprised at this class. I had a law/disorder in Literature class last year where this type of topic would not have been laughed at(atleast not by the teacher.) Anyway... just a rant. Other classroom laugh experiances? I hope i get to debate my topic. Maybe I can stop the little kid "i am in 5th grade and just touched my first boobie" type of laughter. Sex work needs to be taken more seriously.

Decriminalisation would mean that escorts can freely go about their business without the law forever breathing down their backs and having to resort to all sorts of tricks so LE doesn't "get" them. It would allow it to be more free-er and open. Yes there are positives and negatives to this it it just that there is inherently more freedom in decriminalisation compared with legalisation.
