Default Junk food ads target of lawsuit

I saw this news story and could not help but to roll my eyes.

Sheesh, like watching those tv commertials is unaviodable. Or like parents can't simply refuse to buy junk food for their kids.

I would see where there would be a problem if the ads were being played in schools where attendance is compulsory, but watching TV is voluntary.

I have an 11 year old step son who has never watched commertial tv. We rent DVD's of his favorite programs- no commertials, watch at our leisure, and his parents have complete control over what content he gets to view.

My answer to this whole STUPID lawsuit... Turn off the TV.

Maybe I'm just too simple thinking?

Once again it seems to me with good parenting this could be avoided , isnt that what parents do -take care of their children ? My parents didnt let me eat a bunch of shit all day and get obese ( I did that on my own later in life lol ), but also kids went outside to play a lot more when I was growing up now they play all those video games sitting on the couch stuffing there faces .

"Going out on a limb here, perhaps her (Carlson's) kids want these foods not because of ads, but because they're children," said Dan Mindus, spokesman for the Center for Consumer Freedom."

This is why the parents will probably (and should) loose the lawsuit. THEY are the ones that have control over what their kids eat, not McDonalds or anyone else. Yes kids will beg and complain when they don't get their way, but they do that with everything. You can't sue the mattress company because you made your kid go to bed when they didn't want to, just like they shouldn't be able to sue Nick or McD's just because they want something they can't have. I guess people are running out of things to sue for and are getting creative now.

You mean, take responsibility for their own choices/actions/decisions? How in the world could you suggest that??

really really sad. this is where "just say no" is a valid and useful message. for every mcdonald's commercial, there is a jenny craig or weightwatchers commercial (although prolly not during kiddy hours). anyways...eventually, cause and effect will register in the minds of youths

I have to ask why your stepson has never watched commertial TV & when are you going to let him?I think it is great that you & your family monitor his development but age 11 I think he has a understanding of what is good & bad to a degree. On the lawsiut I think the parents are acting like children, trying to get money for doing there job which is sell burgers.

When he has a job and can pay for cable/satelite.

I cancled my cable back in 1996 because I just didn't have time to watch it, and never got it again. I don't miss it, either. I have no reception for "free" tv in my area.

interestingly enough, mcdonalds' "grimace" character was morbidly obese from the get-go.

when are we going to see grimace's ads for jenny craig or perhaps a new svelte grimace...

Without arguing about whether or not kids should be allowed to watch TV, don't you think that OUR values are kind of odd?
Like these people - the network in conjunction with the candy sellers - should be allowed to make a fortune polluting our kids, but none of the responsibility is their's?

There is a reason they have advertising - because it affects people's behaviour. Children are particularly vulnerable.

I mean I don't know how much merit the case has - I think it is weird to sue the network for airing ads, while not suing the people making the product, for one - but why should a company be able to found itself, sustain itself, etc., rotting kids teeth and stunting their growth and then say "Well, the parents shouldn't allow them to eat things that we spend 24 hours a day making them want." Doesn't THAT seem like it is evading responsibility? It also seems a bit precious - we are making and pushing a product, but you should know better than to eat it.

In terms of parental responsibility - parents should also supervise children on the internet. It doesn't make it the parent's fault when unscrupulous companies have sought to gather personal information on children surfing their sites. Which is why there is legislation preventing them from doing that.

I think these parents read the book "Fast Food Nation" where it talks about how commercials are made especially to get children to feel they NEED that item. As per the lawsuit... maybe instead of attorneys they should go to parenting classes and maybe a nutritionist.

They lost the famous suit against fast food giants where their claim was the food made them fat, not their decision to go to get burgers 5 times a week. So since they lost the first time around, they're going for a different type of attack. The bottom line is this, Tony the Tiger and Ronald McDonald have origins not a few years ago but DECADES ago!!! Tony the Tiger originated in 1952, and Ronald in 1963. Most likely these icons were around before these whiney, do-nothing, suing a**holes were even born. Yet here they are feeling entitled to not have to do responsible parenting...oh no! They're blaming society for their kids who want to have a friggin' Happy Meal. It's the same moronic people behind this suit as are the people who claim that "guns kill people" and the non-smoking nazis who tell you that you can't even smoke in your own house anymore. I have a friend who is on the seminar lecture circuit who is a "reformed attorney" as he calls it. He calls people like those in this article "Sue-ers" and for good reason.

    the parentalresponsibility thing is fucked
    theyre bred to fuck up
theyre not even given the time to be able to handlethemselveslet alone another life
(usually they learn it when its too late it seems
theyre not to blame when the ignorance and irresponsibility is nurtured
    by design

I was reading about that today too! You know, its sad.

I'm not the perfect mom, I don't always give my son 100% healthy food 100% of the time, but when we are at the store, I don't just buy all this junk food because my son saw an ad on TV or anything like that, its silly! Why can't the parent just say no??? I do! Even if my kid throws a fit, he can just throw that fit, I'm not giving in.

A lot of the kids at my son's school eat Hostess donuts and McDonald's food for breakfast every morning, its disgusting!!

    Some people are so stupid!
