Hi all! I'm getting ready to start dancing in NY and I wanted to know if it's better to drive or take the subway, cab, etc? How much does it usually cost you (w/parking, or cab fees, etc)? Thanks a million!

You'll quickly find that you're not going to need a car if you move to Manhattan or one of the neighboring boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island). It's much more convenient to take a cab or car service, plus you won't have to worry about your car getting broken into. Not to mention the insurance rates and NYC gas prices.Originally Posted by follow_me
Parking in Manhattan is ridiculous. You can't count on there being a spot on the street so if you want a reserved spot in one of the commercial parking structures you'll first have to get on a huge waiting list (which you can wait up to a year), and depending on the location you can expect to pay upwards of $600/month for that spot. On the other hand the subways and buses are $2/ride (cheaper if you get a monthly card) and cab fares are very reasonable compared to other major cities.
Good luck with your new gig! Despite the negative stuff I just mentioned NYC is an awesome place.

I never had a car in the city. I always took the subway or car service (not to be confused with a cab). I could get from my old place in Brooklyn to anywhere in Manhattan for $20 by car service. And the weekly passes for the subway are a blessing.

There is parking to be found, it really depends on the area and time you'll be working. The later the better when it comes to street parking (if there are more stores on the street than townhomes though)
I don't find it scary to ride the subway at night, but what would help is finding out which line you'll be taking and how many stops.
Try not to move to staten island though. It will be a pain getting back home and you'll have to pay a toll everyday just to leave the island.
You definitely don't need the car if you're in Manhattan. If you're in the other boroughs you can find parking on the street as "pleasurevictim" mentioned. If you know which clubs you have in mind, we can probably give you a better information. : )
Thank you for your responses!
DancerNY- Eventually, I'm going to try and get into PEC, Scores, or Hustler, but for now I'll be at Private Eyes.

Private Eyes is midtown west, which has a lot of parking structures so you'll have good options to choose from should you decide to drive in. As for public transportation you'll be just a few blocks away from the 42st stop on the A/C/E line so you should be all set.Originally Posted by follow_me
There's this site that's really handy in figuring out how to get from where to where using the subway.
Thank u Buck!

When i lived in Brooklyn and worked and went to school in manhattan i never needed a car. Sometimes its nice to have a car on those late nights after the club though. Because the commute on the 4 train at 4-5 am in the morning is no joke.
My pleasure. I had someone help me get my bearings when I first moved here so I'm just happy to pass along the good mojo.Originally Posted by follow_me
Yeah, waiting for a train at 4 in the morning is a major drag... especially if you JUST missed a train. You're better off hailing down a cab or calling for a car service. It's well worth the money to get you home that much quicker.Originally Posted by PaNe
