Default Great new eateries in Chicago?

I'm not existentially bored--yet--but I am bored to tears with my usual food haunts. Hoping locals on the board can recommend some cool--ideally ethnic--places to dine or just drink in.

    Cheers!

Not sure what part of Chicago you're in, but one of my favorite new places from the last year or so is Dorado at 2301 West Foster. Not a trendy neighborhood at all, but it feels pretty trendy on the inside. Basically, the chef uses French cooking techniques on Mexican Food. They have a roast pork served with an "orange" cream sauce (almost like a brandy cream sauce) that's unbelievable. Also, the place is byob, so it makes for a great cheap date place if you're trying to save a few bucks.

Hit Addison/Clark. They have just about every type of restaurant there. There is a GREAT Ethiopian Cuisine Restaurant on Clark just south of Addison...it's called something like, Adabi Abbibi or something like that (sorry, it's been 2 years since I've been there). They have the best Ethiopian food I've ever tasted!

Organic vodka? I've zeroed in on KettleOne over the past couple years but am willing to mix it up.

If you are anywhere near the south burbs, try Peppercorn in Palos Heights. It's on Southwest Hwy off of 111th. They have great food and great service. All things considering, their food is moderately priced, you would think it would be more expensive after tasting how good it is.

It's not really ethnic or anything, but it's not the run-of-the-mill Chili's/Fridays/Chgo Beef or Pizza type of place. My favorite thing there is cajun blackened mango-salsa tilapia. Comes with a potato and vegetable for about $16 and the plate is huge. They have a top-notch martini bar attached to it with live music on most weekends. Martinis are $6-7. The have low-end to high-end wine and champagne too. I've even gotten a bottle of 1995 Cristal for only $425.00 (not bad considering their mark-up was only $30.00 more than I could have bought it at a store).

Excellent idea, VG. I used to dine Ethiopian often when I first landed in Chicago (gulp, two decades ago!). It was the first place outside of Washington, DC that had Ethiopian resturants. This is a good suggestion on another score, too: there's plenty on the menu for a vegitarian to eat. I'm a meat-eater myself, but keeping meeting women who aren't. (What's with that, eh? When did hot meat become un-sexy? What does a vegitarian couple consume to get their endorphins bubbling?)

    Thanks.

well I've always been fondest of Portillos. sure its hardly new, but even now that I'm not in Chicago I've driven the three hours from my door just to eat an italian beef.

but then again I'm often accused of having issues
