    Default deciding to dance

i need some advice from somebody who has had a similar experience. i am a health inspector, and i inspect restaurants. i don't make very good money, but i like my job. i am interested in picking up a few shifts a week dancing to help pay the bills and also because i am interested in the experience of being a dancer for a while. the problem is, my employer has a policy that any outside employment must be reported... and i suspect that it would not be a huge hit with my department if they knew that i was going to be a dancer. also, i am concerned that some of the people i inspect might see me dance, and i am concerned about how this could affect my job. has anybody been in a similar situation? and if so, do you have any advice?

    xoxo

If you tell your employer that you are self-employed on the side, will he make you tell him what exactly you do? I've been told to put down "self-employed" on tax forms and on future job applications, so I won't have "stripper" on my employment record, so could you just tell him that?

i'm pretty sure they would want to know exactly what i was doing... i'm almost positive that they couldn't fire me for it, though, because the city i work for is very progressive and lawsuit-sensitive. i am concerned about how much of a challenge it would pose in the future, though, and whether it would affect my promotional prospects, jack up my career, etc. but at the same time, i feel very strongly that it's my right to dance if i want to, and if i still continue to do a good job as a health inspector, it shouldn't matter what i'm dong as a second job.

I'm in school right now, and when I graduate (after I get my Masters or PhD) I want to be a clinical psychologist. I've talked to a few of my professors, as well as some career counselors, and they all said that my dancing job shouldn't be held against me. As long as I keep a clean record (no prostitution or drug charges), this will be looked at as any other job, and I will still have all my options open once I graduate. This job should not impact any decisions that you make in the future.

you could be a door girl for an hour, then dance the rest of the night. Someone I used to work with did that for similar reasons. Either that or waitress for a minute. As long as you have a paycheck, your coverd.

thanks! that is very helpful. i have always struggled between the things that i want to do and the things i think other people want me to do. and in the end, i always end up picking the things i want to do. i don't think you can explore your potential without doing so.

awesome attitude! My wife and I are swingers (and enjoy the clubs!) but even though we are not ashamed in the slightest about our lifestyle choice, we have to keep it relatively secret... sigh... Go for it DaniGirl...
