So I just dyed my hair black with Garnier Nutrisse, and though my one inch roots that I was trying to get rid of, are darker--I can still notice them!!!
Do not buy this product!!

Yea, if this is the brand that has shampoo and conditioner in green bottles--this also sucks! The conditioner left my hair super greasy like I hadn't cleaned it at all. I stay away from their brand name items now.
I like Herbal Essence hair color. I dye my hair blonde (natural color is medium-dark brown) and this actually gets my hair the bleach blonde color that I like. It's more damaging that going to get it done professionally, but the places I've gone to get my hair professionally done can't even get my hair as light as I like it, so I just make sure I use tons of conditioner after, and I'm fine. So if it can get my hair bleach blonde, maybe this brand will work to make your hair darker.
I tried Garnier's gel and I wasn't a fan of it either, but it was in a respectable price range ($but on special at Albertson's on a two-for-one. aargh, I should have known.

If your dying your hair black go to the mens section. Thats the best stuff(I went through a black hair stage a long while ago).
Also, did you apply it to your roots first and leave it on 10-15 minutes longer then the rest? If you did then switch products, if not, then it was probably your own fault.
I like the garnier conditioner. If you have curls, or have wasit length(or both if like me) and like to wash hair every day or condition every day(wash every other) their conditioners are perfect. I like the little green tubs. I wouldn't consider garnier to be a name brand though-head for a salon to get that stuff.

Isn't this a gel dye? I've never had much luck with gel dyes (since my hair is so dark). I never had luck with Garnier or Herbal Essence- just part of having super dark hair, I guess.
I left the stuff on for probably over an hour because I was too busy with other things to hop in the shower--so yeah, not my bad. I'll check out the men's section. I was going to go to the salon, but haven't had the time to make an appt. so I was just SO tired of roots.

Do Manic Panic. I bought some of that stuff for a friend awhile ago and it turned her hair black, it was a lot like a permanent color, some of it never came out.

Hmm, maybe not for you, but my friend's hair was BLACK forever. I mean, it never came out. It acted just like permanent dye. In fact, we finally had to dye it a different color so she didn't look so gothic and washed out.Originally Posted by VenomKissed
black dye, whether it is permanant or not, will never come out completely. especially if you have put it over hair that has been bleached or lightened, or on blond hair---forget about it, it won't come out!
if you were to use a temporary black dye on hair that is already say, dark brown, it may seem to fade completely away b/c the hair underneath the black dye is so dark that the last of the black dye isn't noticable. but on hair that is porous from being bleached or lightened or just damaged by heat, etc, you can forget it, it's never coming out until it's cut off. same goes for red dye on porous hair.
Oh, I musta took a wrong turn at Albuquerque.
howdy ho, junior rangers.
what's RAW? and how pricey is that ink stuff at Hot Topic?
RAW is another dye I've used, I've seen some permanent stuff by them but haven't used it yet, usually you can find it at hottopic (over priced) or at sally hansen beauty supply stores <3 I think the ink stuff was like $12-14, I'm not even sure if they still carry it, haven't been there in a while.
I've tried dyeing my hair black before and it faded right back into a warm brown within weeks. What bikinigirl04 said has me thinking tho, perhaps if you bleached it first? just a little bit, nothing drastic and then tried the black dye the next day?
I've always liked Nutrisse. I think it's difficult (with any haircolour) to get the results to want. I've been disappointed many times by hairdyes (usually Feria) but you learn what works best after a while.
For weirder hair colors, Special Effects is definitely the best. Manic panic is crud compared to it. You can find it online or often at Hot Topic or other "alternative" stores. I get mine from amphigory.com.

I always leave this stuff to a professional. I'm a fraidy cat with my hair!! Its nice and long and I don't want to ruin it.
I've used over the counter stuff that has worked, but I just tend to go with whatever looks good in the store. <sigh> also, I took a more careful look today, and it's not as bad as I originally thought but it's not a seemless black.
I used to dye my hair black for years, I always used Nice and Easy in blue black, or natural black,Feria is good too, blue black will cover anything, and always looks nice and shiny
I'm in love with that new L'oreal color expert stuff. It's almost twice as expensive as regular dye, but it comes with highlights that you put in after the dye. If you make a lot of very thin highlights rather than a few big chunky ones, it comes out looking very nice.
