Have any of you ever had microbraids?

I have been considering getting microbraids. I've always wanted to do it but just haven't yet. If anyone here has had them before could you share some info about it with me and your experience of having them? Like how long does it take and do they use just your own hair or what? How long does it last? And is it comfortable like sleeping on it? Is it damaging to your hair? Any info would be great, thanks!

The only real damage to your hair would be taking it out, a strand or two or three may come out. But nothing shocking.

I've seen women get all their hair braided, and I've seen some who just get the micros 'under' their hair just to make it longer or fuller. That way when someone looks at you, they can't even tell your hair is braided.

When I get my micros done, I only get it 'braided' an inch from my scalp. Its done so well lots of people don't even realize they are braids. The real reason I do that is because I prefe the extensions to be 'open' so I can style it or comb it however I want.

Its not at all uncomfotable to sleep on. How long it will take depends on a few things-

How long your natural hair is

How long you want the 'braid' to be

How good your stylist is at braiding.

The third one can really make or break your time in the chair. I like stylists who don't stop until your whole head is done. There are a few unprofessionals who want to stop and eat, chat with visitors, etc instead of finishing the job. That really irks me.

I go to the salons that are staffed with African women, in *my* experience, they are the fastest and most efficient. I don't expect much conversation because many of them don't speak much english, but I never leave the shop without my hair looking exactly how I want and in decent time.

Do you have a picture of what type of style you want? Usually I know I'll be in the chair for about 6-8 hours.

If I wasn't clear on anything, just ask and I'll try to explain again. Hope I helped some!

I've never had microbraids, but I know that there is a "fastrack" method: the microbraids are braided the full length of the extension to whatever length you want but this is only done for the fron half/third of your scalp. The rest of the microbraids are weaved on using extension. Saves a lot of time but you might not get away with being able to style it in as many different ways as with getting your whole head done without the weave.

My hair is pretty long, about 3 inches past my shoulder. I'd like the braids to be like two inches longer than what my hair is now. I found this pic of a dancer at club Cheetah in Atlanta on the website while I was browsing thru it. I'd like it to be like this...

Hmm, Some of my friends with very short hair can get away with it, but the ones with longer hair...eck. It breaks off.

So it wouldn't be a good idea to get microbraids if I have long hair?

    How long is it?

I am sure if you get someone who does it right so it's not stressing your hair it'd be fine.

if you want it to be a little longer than in the picture, it should take about 8 hours/ maybe a little more.

It shouldn't take as long to do that as it would if you wanted full braids done.

I'm not sure though, since I haven't had then done before like that.

The only time I have had them done, I had "cornrows" and the micros were crocheted on that.

It looked really cool, but took about 9 or 10 hours to do, and it really hurt for the 1st day or two.

Oh and she is hot, lol!!!

Yeah, that might be a better option. Get a braid weave.

Kirah, I've had my hair braided like that before i.e. the model in the photo.

Real microbraids are a lot thinner than that and I thought it was those you were referring to: I haven't had them done before and they would take longer to do.

I personally would not go thinner than the braids the model has in her hair. They are more likely to break your hair. But if your natural hair is strong, I would suggest also taking hair supplements to keep it in good condition if you do decide to get them.

I don't have a pic, that was almost 9yrs ago, but I am looking online right now.

Basically they cornrowed my hair, then crocheted the already braided hair into the cornrows.

I can't find an adequate pic online either. Damn!

This is kinda what they end up looking like. You can't see the actual cornrows, most of the time.

This is a pic of someone with latch hook braids.

I can't find any more pics that are what I am talking about.

I had those braids because i hav thin hair, I can not leave them in long or they will dread. If you have thin hair than micro braiding is a no no

The braider should not cause you pain as she braids. Some stylists truly believe the tighter they twist the hair at the scalp, the longer the braids will last. This is false and the trauma to your scalp can cause inflammation and hair loss. Also, its ok to condition with a light conditioner like suave, V05...unless your hair is naturally straight. If it's naturally straight use a spray, leave-in conditioner.
