Well, looking back over what I originally wrote..I never ASKED anyone anything. I more or less made a statement. I've never been one to follow... I did alot of research on this school in my area, and I'm comfortable with it. They have an excellent placements program and other perks as well. I probablly won't be going to bartending school until the late future, but it is certainly still in my sights.

I know this is an old thread, but as a bartender I wanted to chime in and say DON'T DO IT! Job applicants from bartending schools are seriously the laughingstock of the bar world. At the place I worked any time we got a resume with any mention of a bartending academy it went straight into the garbage. You don't need to pay a shitload of money to learn to be a bartender; you'll learn the drinks as you go. Unless you're at a super swanky bar most people will order simple drinks like gin and tonic or whiskey and coke, and then you can learn the slightly more complicated ones (margaritas, martinis, etc.) as you go along. There's no need to memorize 500 drinks or whatever the bartending schools promise. All bars should have a recipe book behind the bar, for the rare times that someone orders a Fuzzy Purple Slingshot or whatever (okay I just made that name up).

Plus making drinks is really only about a third of a bartender's job. The real job skills you need are:
    1) The ability to find the balance between selling as much liquor as you can while also following your local liquor laws as much as possible. It is a very delicate balance!
    2) The ability to control the bar, because it is a LOT of responsibility, and also the ability to be really bad-ass and throw people out if necessary. Yes in some bars this is more the bouncers' job, but in a smaller bar it may all be up to the bartender. At the bar I worked at I worked all by myself! That means that I had to bartend, cook, cocktail/waitress, check IDs, throw people out, keep an eye on the dancers, and more, all by myself!

So basically what I'm saying is the only way to really learn how to be a bartender is to get yourself a job and just do it. It's about a LOT more than just mixing drinks and making tons of tips. You encounter a lot of different situations, because when you throw alcohol into the mix it can make everything very volatile and things can get really crazy really fast. You definitely need to be able to think fast and with a clear mind, and you seriously need to be able to multi-task.
