    Default Human Sexuality Project

I'm taking a college course on Human Sexuality and I chose to do my project on "sex entertainers" to bash stereotypes that comes with stripping. Ideally I would like to have someone who works in this field to come in and talk to the class on why she started (or he), the pro's and con's of the job, what not to do as a customer, and whatever else she or he has to say.
Of course, I'm not expecting that from these boards. What I really want to ask you is how to approach the topic with a stripper, how to get to talk to her/him without looking sort of crazy (I'm an 18 year old female, so really I'm not any physical threat since I'm only about so big, but I still don't want to weird anyone out), and whether or not I should consult the club owners beforehand.
Also, if you want to give me any opinions, thoughts, etc so that I could present them in my research, that would be incredibly helpful!
    Thank you!

Do a search, you aren't the 1st one to ask that here.

that is such a horrible idea. anyway, whoever you pick to put in front of your classmates will be considered an exception to the rule if it is a stripper who's not drug-addled and alcoholic with four kids by three guys. so it won't change anyone's mind, if that is what you were thinking. and club management are often quite as bad as their stereotypes, and should be avoided.

there's a lot of writing already out there by strippers for both sexworkers and those outside of sexwork. bring that stuff to class instead. at least some of those books deal with the objections commonly raised in ways you can easily reference.

I'm not sure if stripping comes into play in a class on human sexuality unless your class is getting into public expressions of sexuality. It has more to do with economics, in my opinion.

That being said, I would never want to do something like this, even though I've read my own paper on the subject in a small seminar class and am quite open about my profession. I simply can't see what could be gained by explaining/justifying my choices in front of a class of 18-22 year olds. Good luck finding someone . . .

    Sorry for offending everyone.
Yes, this is a course on sexual expression/sexual stereotypes/etc, we're not allowed to lecture to the class, hence why I didn't start with researching facts and figures. I also don't want to take any information from someone who writes about their job on the web because while it's straight from the source, I would want them to cover specific topics, not to mention that once again, that is a lecture.

Anyway, if the moderator wants to delete this, I'd understand. Although I'm not sure why it's such a big deal to want to know information from actual people working in the field rather than someone who may hold a bias and not even know anything about the life.

^ Maybe hit a local club and talk to the dancers face to face.

i've been offered to do this, but I declined because he wasn't gonna give me any money, and an entire classroom of young adults would be watching... I'm not THAT proud to be a stripper

I did this for a friend one time. She was teaching a class on diversity at a local college, and she asked me to come and talk about different types of sex work and my experience as a dancer. So I talked to the class about strippers, the gamut of prostitutes, phone sex, fetish stuff, etc., and then I talked about the things I'd done (all of the above, basically) in sex work, and answered questions from the class (it was a catholic school, they had a lot of questions). About halfway through the questions my friend announces to the class that I have not told them about my childhood abuse and how that plays a role in my sex work. Then some girl raised her hand and told me that I needed moral counseling from a priest. It sucked.

I'm also taking a class in human sexuality this semester, and will have to do a presentation... so I get where you're coming from. I don't understand the requirements for your presentation tho... you are supposed to do a presentation without talking about facts?

I was thinking about this thread tonight... Um, well... miabella kinda touched on it... But you may want to get more than one stripper to speak... if she's not considered the exception to the rule, she'll be eaten alive. I've seen some seminars advertised on my campus called S.L.U.T.S. Unite or something like that... where sexworkers get together... maybe you can find a club?

I would do it if I wasn't on the other side of the globe, I'd love to do something like that! If you wanted to do an interview via email at any time get in touch (-:

I really wouldn't mind helping you out, but here's the thing. Like everyone else said, and like you yourself said, there are a lot of stereotypes about being a stripper. Even some customers that come into the strip clubs think of us in a certain way. I'm in school, and all the girls I work with and all the regular customers at my club know this. Well one night I went to a guy to get a tip, and he was sitting with some of his friends. They all were in their 30s or early 40s. Well the guy gave me a tip, and he said, "Here, go pay for some school with this" (I'd never seen him before, he didn't know I was in school. Then his friend starts laughing and says, "Yeah right you know this is going towards her nightly fix." So even customers think of us in this stereotypical way. So in order to even start to get rid of stereotypes, this would have to be a much larger study than what you're probably planning on doing. Like the other girls said, if you brought in a dancer to talk to your class, the students probably would still keep all of the stereotypes about dancers that they already have, and just look at this one dancer as an exception to the rule.
Like I said, I will help you out by answering any questions, or doing a survey, just PM me. But I think that the problem of stereotypes is one that will not easily be broken, even in a college classroom.

Girl, I would have ripped up the tip and thrown it back at him. I also would have told him to fuck off, and have him and his buddies tossed outta there.

That's bulshit. Jus because some girls wanna do that shit, does not mean we all do, nor does it make us all bad people.

As for th OP, good luck. I don't think just one girl is going to change anyone's mind, G-d knows I hav been trying for years.
