    Default Do it yourself light

I currently have medium brown hair, with some gold/red undertones. I don't know what my natural color is, since I've been constantly changing it's color, every 6 weeks, since I was 10.

I want to go light. Like a deep ash blond. (not light light, but where it's a mix of brown and blond, and ashy). Is this possible to do at home? Or will I have to fork over the money for a colorist?

If I can do it at home, what color brand would work best? I know I should go to a sally's, but I live in hick ville currently...the closest is 110 miles away.

    Any help?

If you want to go from gold to ash, then yes, you will need a colorist.

I have medium brown hair naturally, and I die my hair blonde myself. I use the Clairol Born Blond haircolor in ultra. I can get my hair almost bleach-blonde, but I have to leave the dye on for about an hour and 15 minutes. The instructions say you should leave the dye on anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours depending on how dark your natural color is. You could try that, but it tends to be more damaging than the dye that they use in salons. I just do my hair myself now because all of the salons I've been to couldn't get my hair as light as I wanted. I've always had good luck with clairol, so maybe check out some of their haircolors to find the color you're looking for. Going to a salon to get your hair done is much healthier for your hair though.

I'm going through a similar issue myself at the moment. Unfortunately after a trip to 3 well-reputed salons in the city, this is what I've learned:

The more you dye your hair, the more reluctant a hair dresser will be to fix it. The more products you use, the more complicated it will be for your colorist to figure out what chemicals are in your hair and how they will react to the dye that they plan on using. If you've used one standard color by the same company for years, they're more likely to give it a shot. Also, if you've got brown or black dye in your hair, it's hard to get it to go ashy without leaving the peroxide on for a loooong time. Which means more damage. Basically the end of the story for me was a few stylists offering to lighten my hair to a red, wait two months and then go the rest of the way. BUT they said they would make no guarantees what condition my hair would be in afterwards. The other stylist flat out refused. Still, I learned a lot and some hair dressing places have free consults, so even if you're going to do it at home you can get some good info from a well-versed colorist.

I'm personally a blonde with dyed black hair (ack!) waiting for it to grow out so I can go platinum. I just have to play the waiting game...

    I did it!

I used "Born Blond" to bleach my dark hair first, in "Maxi"...it said on the box it'd turn my hair whiteish blond, but it didn't come close. It became a orange, with an almost neon yellow tinge.

I used Nice 'n Easy (I was very hesitant to use this product, but it was the only one in the store) in Medium Ash Blond.

My hair looks GREAT! It's very light, not at all brassy, no red tones...perfect ash blond!

All I know is if you already have color on your hair you better go see a colorist cuz they have special stuff to strip that color away (not strip to like pamela blonde, but essentially that's what you have to do since you want to take color away) I wouldn't do it at home, in MY experience any time I've ever tried to do blonde at home I end up making it look horrible and HAVE to go to a colorist ANYWAYZ! Skip the frustration and anguish and just get it done professionally!.....Like Lalitha said, if you already have color in, you are pretty much screwed for at home stuff.....All I can say is You've been warned!!!
