Several Floridians are among a group of 30 people charged with outrageous methods of smuggling illegal drugs, including surgically implanting packets of heroin into the stomachs of purebred puppies, according to a Local 6 News report.
"The organization's outrageous and heinous smuggling method of implanting heroin inside puppies is a true indication of the extent that drug dealers go to make their profit," head of the Drug Enforcement Administration's New York office John Gilbride said.
Drug Enforcement Administration officials said the traffickers were attempting to smuggle the pups into the United States on commercial flights. The drugs were to be distributed along the East Coast, with hubs in New York, Miami and North Carolina.
During a raid of the operation, officers found six puppies impregnated with liquid heroin packets. Three of the dogs later died from infection after the drugs were removed.
John Gilbride, head of the Drug Enforcement Administration's New York office, said the "sick scheme" was uncovered by a two-year multi-agency investigation.
"The organization's outrageous and heinous smuggling method of implanting heroin inside puppies is a true indication of the extent that drug dealers go to make their profit," Gilbride told WPLG-TV.
Investigators said the distribution area of the Colombia-based network reached from Miami to New York City.
DEA officials say the drug crew also used human couriers, aerosol cans and body cream containers to transport their drugs.
"It just goes to show what a drug trafficking organization, the lengths they will go, to struggle their poison into the United States for one reason, for profit," Gilbride said.
More than 30 people have been arrested in Colombia, New York, Florida and North Carolina. More arrests are expected.

As far as these guys being shot...nope...way too quick. They should be sliced open with a dull blade and have a poisonous substance stuffed into their bodies, all the while being completely conscious and unmedicated of course!!! I'll volunteer.
