    Default Sleep Bruxism

This is more of a health issue, so I thought I'd post it here..

Has anyone ever heard of Sleep Bruxism? It's a sterotyped movement disorder characterized by grinding or clenching of the teeth during sleep. The disorder has also been identified as nocturnal bruxism, nocturnal tooth-grinding and nocturnal tooth-clenching.

Does anyone have this problem? My b/f tells me I do it every night so I'm curious if anyone has dealt with this..

Bruxism can be very damaging to your teeth and jaws....ask your dentist about anti-bruxism devices/clench suppression systems....

Yes hun, I have always grinded my teeth. Sometimes my boyfriend has to wake me up and tell me to stop. My mom said when I was younger it was sooo loud she could hear it in the next room. As I have gotten older though, it has lessened. I find that I do it more when I am stressed out. Have you been going to bed stressed lately? If so, try to do something destressing before you go to bed, and as weird as this sounds, think to yourself (as you're falling asleep) "I'm gonna have good dreams, I'm gonna have good dreams!" Or simply think about what you're going to dream about. It's weird but it works for me almost every time! That will help keep your stress down while you're actually sleeping.

I watched somting on Discov. chan. about this not to long ago. It's in a class w/ sleep walking/talking. Ppl. with these probs. have trouble entering REM sleep. There's something inside the persons body that distacts the body from properly entering REM
A friend of mine has this prob. It would drive me crazy when I would crash at her house in h.s.

Yep, and I dislocated my jaw doing it once. Now I've taught myself to wake up when I start doing it, and then I usually go back to sleep and don't do it. It's definitely related to stress.

I do it a lot. I've had my roomate tell me it has woken her up. It's usually a reaction to a lot of stress or upset for me. It can lead to some big problems, so you should get it checked out. I've started to get popping and clicking in my jaw because of it. Just do what you can to help yourself relax and mellow out before bed. Good luck.

My boyfriend does this once in a while, especially if he's been drinking. I always shake him to get him to stop. It can be damaging to your teeth, so you should look into the different devices that they make to help this problem.

I do this also, my roommate wore a mouth guard at night and it seemed to help her. I have never tried it though.

My dad does this and his teeth are almost grinded to the gums. He's an extreme case whose always very tense though. I've been told by my dentist that there's damage to my teeth from the same thing. Get a mouthguard from your dentist. They used to and still might sell some at the drug store for $25, but in my experience, it didn't mold well and wasn't as comfortable as a professionally molded one.

I grind my teeth at night. I went to the drugstore and bought a night mouth gaurd, lemme tell ya..NOT comfortable. i felt like i was a football player the gaurd was so bulky and i couldn't close my mouth with all that plastic. Ick so uncomfortable. If i get insurence maybe i'll have my dentist make me a mouthguard that is comfortable.

Get a mouth guard, other wise you'll grind your teeth down, and develop a click in your jaw when you open it and close it. The only way to fix the click is surgery, wear they break the jaw, saw off part of it and realign the jaw to make it fit right. It really sucks when people o that, because it can all be prevented with a product that costs less then $100

My oldest sons does this. and between tightening with my braces I do it as well.

My son is horrible. When he was small we would wake up with him doing it so LOUD that we would try almost anything to stop it. He wore down a few side baby teeth etc.

now there are a few things we tested for though, because of it. One was diabetes and the other is ..yes worms. Sounds totally fucked up but I had to check my son for worms. Its basically a fecal sample that the dr's office looks.

    Why worms?

Because as they move out of the anus ( at night. ) it causes just enough irritation that a person will grind their teeth.

No he didnt have worms lol and no diabetes. Still unknown why he does it.

We got a mouth guard at walgreens , boiled it and while it was still soft had him put it in his mouth so that it would form to fit him. IT does help but doesn't cure the problem.

The dentist refused to give him a pro mouth guard because he still has babyteeth. shit made no sense to me. So we bought the one from walgreens because I personally couldnt' take it.

I use to have to turn on a fan in my room a shut the door to avoid the noise.

    TMJ causes grinding too.

i do it too, but i've never woken anybody up, except myself. but then again, it's probably muffled by the obscenely loud snoring of the other inhabitants of my house. i had no idea it had a fancy name. i should probably get a mouthgaurd, but my dentist hasn't mentioned it in a few years, so it's apparently not that bad.... *(~shrugs~)* plus i hate the idea of sleeping with a mouthgaurd. i definately do it more when stressed. i've also been known to sleep walk, but i haven't done that in a while.

LOL! I just remebered this story of me sleep walking which I used to do a lot years ago. We had just moved and were staying with my mom's friend. I was 12 at the time and I suppose all the changes had me stressed out. Well one night I walked down the stairs, into the kitchen, pulled my pants down and peed right on the floor! HaHa! I layed right down next to it, and was awoken by my mom and her friend in the morning! I couldn't believe it and was sooo embarrassed. Now I just think it's funny as hell!!

I didn't relise some people wake themselves up, or are loudly grinding thier teeth while sleeping. I have never woken anybody up, or myself when grinding..i'm not even sure if i do it everynight. But my dentist was right on when she grabbed my shoulders and said 'neen, do you keep all your tension in your neck/shoulder/jaw area' she was right on.

I have TMJ and grind my teeth at night. Instead of paying $300 for a mouthguard at the the dentist or $25 for one at the drugstore, I wear a football mouthguard bought for 99 cents at my local super discount store. I chew through one ever 2-3 months.

I used to wear Sleep Right Nightguard ($70). I chew through that at the same rate too. It is more comfortable and less noticeable though.

I have the same problem. The dentist keeps tryng to get me to buy one of those $500 mouthguards, threatening that I will destry my otherwise excellent teeth and gums. I had one made for me several years ago, but I lost it. Doh! I was insured and didn't realize how expensive they are...now I'm insured again, perhaps I will get one again.

Funny thing, I started doing it at 20, right after I took a certain drug for the first time, and have done it constantly since then....

Ditto. Except I was 22. Then I began having panic attacks although there is no history in my family. Kids, don't do drugs.
