    Default soymilk vs. skim

I'm eating much healthier these days, and have recently switched to soymilk. But, I've noticed that all brands of soymilk (even organic and nonfat) have some sort if sugar product listed as the second ingredient. I'm trying to lose a few pounds, and I'm not lactose intolerant.
My question: Is soymilk so much better than skim cow's milk that it's worth the additional sugar?
Any input would be greatly appreciated!

as long as it's not processed sugar (white sugar), you're fine. All 3 of my kids drink soy..i don't cause I think it's nasty..but I also don't like regular milk. It's the processed sugar that gets ya!

oh and also as long as it's not high fructose corn syrup...although I've never seen soy milk with that in it. if you drink that stuff, you may as well inject fat to your thighs! lol

Soy is not healtier than regular milk and it has all sorts of sugar and artificial flavours.

IMO The best milk would be the Organic kind, we buy Horizon.- no added sugars, no cows with hormone injections. Good ol' fashion milk. I dont drink milk - yuck but my man does and wont drink anything but this kind.

There are a few brands of soymilk that have no sugar added. WestSoy has an unsweetened soymilk, and I believe Silk has one also.

I won't drink soy milk. Too much soy will inhibit your body from absorbing and using the protein to build muscles. I'm lactose intolerant, so I skip the cow's milk. I prefer Rice Milk. I drink it (in protein shakes) every once in a while, but my daughter loves drinking the Chocolate Rice Milk with dinner...so, that's that.

The unrefined sugars in Soymilk and Rice Milk are healthier for you than the refined sugars in other milk. Your body can process natural sugars...just not refined/processed sugars. If you are not lactose intolerant, you may want to try the organic milk or you could get the "no sugar" soy milk.

i love soy milk, and hate cow's milk, so it's simple for me. but if you're worried about calories, get some light soy milk. yes, it is available, but you might have to go to whole foods to get it. if you have a natural foods store in your area, you'll find an amazing selection of soy milks, rice milks, and various and sundry other non-animal milk-like products. some are sugar free, some are lactose free, some are milk free, some are taste free, but alot are pretty good. my advice is to always get the refridgerated kind though- the type off the the shelves can be lumpy and disturbing.

Yum, I love soy milk! My favourite brands are So Nice's Vanilla and Silk's Chocolate, (even if the latter tastes a bit too... um.. is it stupid to say soy-ish?) I would say they're better for you than Skim milk because they have a lot more vitamins added, if you get a good one. For example, one glass of So Nice Vanilla has 50% of yer B-12 RDI and is only 100 cals. And also, I notice I have a lot more phlegm with regular milk.

venusofwillendorf's so right, the unrefrigerated kind can get a bit skanky.
    I'm such a soy whore.

There is nothing superior about soy milk over cows milk. The only reason to switch would be the lactose issues. If you don't have problems with lactose, skim milk is fine.

Soy milk is inferior to skim milk insofar as it can't give you the same % of b12. I have b12 absoption issues, and get very anemic when I go off dairy (even fortified alternatives don't hold a candle, since the added stuff doesn't get absorped as well). Unless I get b12 shots in my arm twice a month, I need cow's milk or red meat for my b12. But since my stomach is a mess these days, the needles are easier to take than the milk! I do prefer the taste of soy though (Silk brand vanilla anyway).

some of us who choose to eat healthier to reduce or eliminate diary products from their diets.

i am one of those people. i don't drink cow's milk (or eat meat or eggs), and only eat 'vegetarian' cheese (made without rennet or vegetable rennet) on occasion (sp). the soymilk i drink is not flavored and doesn't contain artifical anything in it.

soymilk is not inferior to or superior to cow's milk, just an alternative...and a good multi vitamin covers what's supposedly 'missing' from my diet.

why do some people still have to fight to get the same opportunities that are given to others?

    reclusiveness...is a good thing.

^^ I agree when all pros and cons are examined, it's hard to say one is better than the other. I just wanted to point out that certain ways to digest vitamins work better than others- I know for a fact I have to take a lot more iron and b12 synthetically in order to get the same amount actually into my bloodstream than if I were to just eat direct animal products. For most people it makes no difference, but some of us do have tricky absoption issues, and anemia is no fun.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Many, many pros and cons. The deciding factor may simply wind up being that skim is cheaper, considering I haven't noticed any difference whatsoever since switching to soy.
    Again, thanks.
