Yes, but you smoke way more cigs in a day than you would weed(at least me and most people I've encountered do). Also, I don't tend to smoke joints, or even that much amount of weed in one sitting, but I'm sure some do. Then again, some people out there smoke 3 packs a day. Also, as far as holding it in longer, I don't do this at all. I did when I first started smoking, but I have never found that it gets me "higher". Once the THC is in there, it's in there, IMO.

Regardless, smoking anything after surgery is still a bad idea.

I agree with everyone else, make some brownies and eat them in moderation. Eat one, wait 15 minutes or so and then if you need more have another smaller serving. I used to have a horrible fear of OTC prescriptions because of how addicting they are and I have made pot brownies many times when I was sick and couldn't smoke. Since I am used to smoking it, I knew what effects eating it would have and it was better than me taking perks or vicodin. Don't smoke it for at least 2 weeks after, the risk of coughing really hard and popping a stitch or even hurting your chest more just isn't worth it.

I took Vicodin for 10 years. It only makes you sick when you dont eat before you take it

On the comment about Methadone... Please don't try taking that for pain as it would only take a period of 3 or so days for u to become addicted !!! and I'm sure that's not what ur looking for ! I agree with the other girls on the idea of sticking to your prescribed meds but also ask the doc about pot if you're considering it as it's better to be safe than sorry... Good Luck

Em...I think that this was a really good question/thread.
I smoke weed here and there occasionally...if I do its mostly for pain relief or as a sleep aid. My boyfriend has Crohn's disease so he smokes weed for the pain associated with it and therefore its around me a lot of the time, and I have to say that despite not ever being someone who smoked it on any sort of regular basis, i'm gaining more of an appreciation for it's medicinal purposes.

I *fucked* my knee up royally not too long ago snowboarding, and went to the doctor who was going to put me on all sorts of colourful painkillers...which he explained were very easy to become dependent on, and with a long list of potential side effects...the knee injury wasn't even that severe either...so, I just wasn't comfortable pumping my body with that much medication. Instead I iced it and got my sweetie to give me bud cookies whenever I had pain. When you aren't ingesting the smoke, (and in my opinion, even when you are) marijuana is SUCH a better alternative to pain medications. I'm not saying post surgery you aren't going to be taking pain meds...you obvioulsy will be...but I would definitely try to encorporate the marijuana in there for sure.
I'm a fan of well made cookies (I can get a recipe for you, if you like) that have choice bud in them (I happen to live in B.C...sub-par bud just isn't even an issue here so that's why i'm saying that). They'll knock out the pain and help with any post op nausea etc etc etc.
Anyways, i'm obviously part of the yes vote...either way, hope the surgery goes smoothly for you! good luck!

Also...a lot of people lose their appetite post surgery....lose unhealthy amounts of weight...usually the pot can help keep your appetite up! happy munching!

    Uhh, hash brownies!!!

You get your chocolate fix and your weed effects without the coughing or the prolonged healing due to smoking. Just be careful when you eat them; it takes longer for the effects to kick in when you eat it, so you can eat waaay too much before you realize you're getting high, and wind up waaaay too stoned. LOL It's happened to me

Just make a batch and eat one small brownie at a time, wait at least half an hour to measure the effects.

Btw, you don't taste the weed in the brownies if you use HASH.

Yeah, this sounds much more like it to me. No way could marijuana be worse for you than other prescribed synthetic painkillers. Far more enjoyable and not addictive.

I believe that the first recorded mention of marijuana was as a perscription for nausea and headache, in China.

Moderation in all things is the key. I used to be a pothead years ago, and still smoke it frequently--but in very, very small amounts.

If you smoke 20-40 joints a day it's worse than the equivalent amount of processed, prepackaged, chemical-laced cigarettes, no doubt, but who the hell does that?

Eating it in small amounts would no doubt be effective, if you decided to do so. Alternative medecine can be equally or more effective, depending on the individual. Not that I'm into meditation and eating weird plants as a cure for cancer, mind you...

The healing process is dependant far more on mental attitude than the vast majority of doctors will admit. In their defense, they have to cover their asses.

Ah, what the hell...since we're on the subject, maybe you guys will find this tidbit interesting:

"As a medicine, cannabis, or ma, as it is known to the Chinese, is first referenced in a Pen Ts’ao, a compilation of herbals, that dates to the first century A.D. by an unknown author. The text notes that the drugs possessed both yin and yang, a clear reference to the dual sex of this dioceous plant. It was advised that the yin, or female plant, should be the only plant cultivated since it harbored more of the medicinal property than the yang, or male plant and it was prescribed in instances where a loss of yin had occurred in the body such as menstrual fatigue and absentmindedness.

As awareness of pharmaceuticals increased among Chinese doctors, ma grew in importance as a therapeutic agent. A surgical anesthetic called ma-yo was invented by combining cannabis resin and wine although it is doubtful that complete loss of sensation resulted unless the patient was rendered unconscious. Nonetheless, complicated surgeries such as incisions into the loin and chest were made possible as a result of this new medicine...

Current potential medical applications of cannabis include its use as an analgesia, to reduce nausea, stimulate the appetite, bronchodilators, anti-convulsants, and anti-glaucoma. Research has shown that cannabis (and psychoactive extracts such THC or cannabinoids) can provide relief for sufferers of multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy. Cannabis can also help to improve the appetite and decrease weight loss in AIDS victims and may be able to slow the growth of cancerous tumors. Recent research has led to the discovery of two specific cannabinoid receptors, CB1 receptors which are highly expressed in the Central Nervous System, and CB2 receptors that occur mainly in immune cells. The discovery of these cannabinoid receptors has led to the demonstration that THC can combine with a receptor on a cell to produce a physiologic reaction typical of naturally occurring endorphins..."

Morphine pills are HIGHLY prescribed here! As is a drip you can take home with you after major surgery....I say lazy shits. Keep the people in the hospital a tad bit longer, and help them out. But again....staph and other crazy invaders are a big problem if you stay too long in the hospital.

Doesn't anyone take Perc. and Darvs. anymore???? I remember when all they gave was Tylenol with Codeine!!!!

I'm confused by this posting. Who in this thread does narcotics for fun? Also...how would a class 3 narcotic, such as vicodin, be a better alternative to weed?
