    Exclamation SinusInfection

Is there anything I can do to be able to still work with a sinus infection? I get them frequently, but never HAD to work. Now I do and I have fever, sinus pressure, sore throat, etc. It's not contageous, and I carry around sanitizer and wash frequently, so the custys wont get sick. But my health insurance doesnt go into effect until March1st and I have no way to be able to afford antibiotics. So Im stuck waiting for it to pass on its own, but I feel so run down and feverish. I need the money badly, I need to work. Help?

Just load up on over the counter drugs and do the best you can. Sorry you feel so bad. Good luck, take care!

zinc, vit.c, echinacea ... in the meantime, sudafed + ibuprofen. Keep an eye on that fever. Most sinus infections clear up on their own, but if they dont, left untreated they can potentially cause some nasty complications (eye infection, etc.)

I know they are a pain though.. I practically had a sinus infection for two years straight when i was a mermaid. (I took sudafed every morning along with my multi.. healthy huh?)

Maybe if you will take your allergy medication it will help prevent these infection. Since you are have them often you need to see a doctor about this!Because your immune system can weaken so bad and you can be in alot of trouble. have you try to get an cheap insurance plan it is less than an $100.00 a month is it is just you, check out the govermant insurance if things get real serious!

33 million americans suffer from chronic sinus infections caused by various agents.
Chronic is worse than acute sinus infections which are easier to solve.
Most ENT's and general doctors agree that sinus inefections are caused by viruses or
bacteria. Only within the last five years thanks to work at the Mayo clinic in Minnesota
has the thrid agent that of mold or fungas also been diagnosed. Anti biotics have little to no effect on mold based sinus infections. Most doctors are very much behind the curve on treatment and testing on mold based sinus problems. The most likely cause is bacteria and you will need antibiotics. The standard treatment is the generic version of Augmentin which is at last available as a generic drug. At least 500mg twice a day and probably 875 mg twice a day. Used to be over $4 a pill "rack rate" but are down to about 90 cents a pill as generic. If a bad episode it won't just go away without anti biotics. Go to an emergency room in a non busy period (pick one that doesn't have a "no anti biotic bias") and get a prescription.

I have chronic sinus infections and they are just the worst. I feel like I am walking through jello, and on nine inch heals, not a good thing.

I feel spacey when one starts to come on, usually about every to every other week. I alternate between using Zicam (the kind you spray up you nose, not the yucky melt in your mouth tabs) and EmergenC packets. I usually do one a day to try and prevent them, but when I have one I do it a couple times during the day.

For prevention I do a liquid multivitamin everyday. Someone told me that it absorbs faster and while I don't know if that's true I do notice a difference b/w the liquid and the tablet vitamins.

And of course, sudafed and other OTC that address the symptoms are great, but I like the ones that you mix with hot water. Again its the absorption thing, and the warmth feels goooood.
    Hope it helps...

I'm just now getting Insurance and should be able to see a PCP when my face isn't so hideous looking--- just got it lasered and it is gross for a day or so then pretty red for another week. I don't know how long the wait will be before I get in to see someone... so let me know if you doc says anything about prevention because I am unbelievable sick and tierd of these things, sometimes it feels like they rule my life.

I have built up an immunity to all antibiotics, thats how frequent they are. And I am running out of OTC options because of that. I need an ENT to fix my deviated septum, its been diagnosed as the problem, its that crooked, but theyre trying to slow things down as much as possible before they resort to surgery. Thing is, Ive been thru so many failed remedies that surgery is the only option left and they're STILL pussyfooting around.

My heart goes out to you because I really feel your pain. I have a deviated septum to. Can't take the antibiotics for the same reason, and even when they "fixed" the sinus infection, they always gave me yeast infections.

Seriously, try the Zicam. It really boosts your immune system when you feel it coming on. I was amazed when I found the stuff last year.

It can be up to $10 per bottle. But you can get two for the same price if you can go to Costco.

Good luck and take care of yourself...

Try Google Mayo clinic Rochester Minnesota. Once you are on the web site Look
for a researcher named Ponikki. He's got an odd name, but you might be able to find
it on the ENT section (Ear nose throat) or the sinus department within the web site.

The cure for a fungal sinus infection is an anti fungal nose spray which isn't too bad.

Your son would need to be probably about 12 or older to apply it himself.

What works for adults is a solution of ampotherin B in topical not IV form sprayed into the nose.

Basically if bacterial standard anti biotics work. If fungal, you need the new stuff not
anti biotics. If a virus, it pretty much becomes a cold and goes away.

Try the Mayo web site and let me know.

I gave you an impossible task as the guy may not be there and there are two Mayo web sites, one for Mayo university and one for Mayo clinic. However research into Chronic Sinuisitis is still there. Rather than use human terms of Ear, Nose and Throat, they use the scientific term Otorhinolaryngology Dept. The general website is www.mayoclinic.org.
I will post an excerpt below. The below article tells you the general treatment but doesn't tell you that they have the cause and a tratment that most other doctors don't have since they know the cause. Secrets and jargon in the world may kill us all. Oh well.
    Research on Chronic Sinusitis
Mayo Clinic researchers have proposed that most chronic sinus infections may be caused by an immune system response to fungi.

    Article in Mayo Clinic Proceedings
Many studies at Mayo Clinic have added evidence to the thinking that chronic rhinosinusitis is caused by an immune reaction to fungi in the nose. Our original study linking chronic rhinosinusitis to fungi in the nose, which was published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings in September 1999, has been reproduced and confirmed by a sinus center in Europe (ENT University Hospital in Graz, Austria).

There are currently 16 studies at Mayo Clinic Rochester to further investigate the role of fungi in inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract.

In addition, researchers from the Allergic Diseases Research Laboratory at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester found that certain white blood cells called T-Lymphocytes are reacting to the fungi and were producing the kind of inflammation we see in the sinuses, and that healthy people did not react in that way. This work was presented at the 2001 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and will be published soon.

The evidence was so convincing that the National Institute of Health (NIH) has given Mayo Clinic a $2.5 million grant to further investigate the mechanisms behind this immunologic response to the fungi.

If you have chronic sinusitis -- that is, a sinus inflammation that persists for three months or longer -- we recommend that you see your personal physician or an ear, nose and throat specialist (otorhinolaryngologist) for the appropriate treatment for this disease. Many times the disease is associated with asthma or allergies and treatment of those associated problems tends to help the chronic sinusitis.

Antibiotics do not help chronic sinusitis in the long run because they target bacteria, which are not usually the cause of chronic sinusitis. Anti-histamines, nasal steroid sprays and systemic steroids are the mainstays of treatment today, depending on the symptoms of the patient.

Over-the-counter medications, including salt-water nasal washes and mist sprays, are useful in treating the symptoms of chronic sinusitis, but do not eliminate the inflammation.

While IV (IV=in the blood) anti fungal medicines are dangerous and last resort, If you spray them topically they aren't dangerous at all. Thats the secret at Mayo. Most US doctors don't know the fungal treatment, or are pissed off that they don't have the
research access that Mayo doctors have. If you live in Minnesota or Wisconsin getting in the Mayo clinic is not a big deal and is almost always covered through a state government
health insurance billing entity. If in Illinois you get trouble but might get through. Seems random. For the rest of you have cash.

    Corafed, by Swift Pharmaceuticals

It is the only non-prescription drug that I have ever had that helped my chronic sinus infections. It is manufactured for First Aide Kits and mine workers, doesn't make you drowsy either. If you keep taking the antibiotics you won't ever find anything that makes them go away because your body becomes resistant, besides the fact that the antibiotics kill the helpful bacteria in your body too (so you have nothing to fight off the infection when it settles in again).

In addition, if chronic sinus is caused by mold, anti biotics do not kill mold and thus would be ineffective against the mold infection.
