I have an accountant who does mine. All the girls I work with actually go to accountants or have someone else that they know do their taxes for them. I asked my manager about where I should go, and she said that H&R might not be well-informed as to how to do taxes for a stripper. The accountant I have now specializes in independant contractors, and does taxes for a few of the bars in my town (including the one I dance at).

yeah, agreed, H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt et all train their 'tax preparers' to handle cookie cutter income and deduction reporting which is geared around employees. Independent Contractor tax returns are certainly not beyond their capability, but it will be up to YOU to supply them with all of the pertinent business income and business expense information. The risk factor is of course that they do not have the specific training or experience to ask YOU the right questions, such that if you don't know the right questions either you're liable to miss out on something important.
CPA's who are very experienced with Independent Contractor business tax returns WILL know the right questions to ask you, which makes a lot of difference if you don't have much of an idea about business accounting and taxes yourself.
There's also the option of going with a tax program like Turbo-Tax Premier (which can do Independent Contractor tax returns i.e. Schedule C). However, even though the tax program will ask you the right questions, if you don't understand the questions there won't be anybody there to explain them as a CPA would. But if you have a good head on your shoulders, you may get by just fine with Turbo-Tax Premier or a similar program and preparing your own tax return.
If you are attempting taking a tremendous amount or questionable deductions a good accountant will probably do a better job than H&R Block but then again a H&R Block will do a better job than a poor accountant. So, I suggest getting an accountant recommendation from someone you trust rather just finding one in the Yellow Pages. If you can't get a recommendation from a friend or family member you are probably better off using H&R Block.
I have used both in the past and H&R Block did just as good of a job as the accountant and a did the job cheaper too.
H&R Block and the like are great to use if you have one W-2 and "common" deductions. However, as a dancer, there are all kinds of deductions you can take (and some you can't). It's better to fork over the money and have an accountant who is skilled in the dancer taxes.
Do not go to H&R Block, I went their last week and she told me that their fees was 284 dollars. She told me that the library downtown would help. So I went downtown and they did everything free. So try going to your local library you might get some luck there. (They did it quick to)!
^ Unless you had a professional who knows the ins and outs of dancer exemptions...I doubt that you claimed as many deductions as you could. I also highly doubt that the people at the library are well-versed enough to know what you can and cannot deduct...and probably just didn't really deduct anything...or deducted everything.
If you are going to pay $284, go to a real tax professional. And, always remember that you get what you pay for.
I use a combination of H&R block's free online tax tool, a variety of spreadsheets I developed myself, then give it all to my CPA, who is a doll and charges me less than $200. Shit, time to get started again!!

As most everyone else has said, the best option is to go to a CPA or a tax specialist. They know the tax laws and also know some triggers for audits.
Most people would be horrified to know what kind of people H&R Block hires to do taxes. I worked there part time answering phones and that was all i needed to convince me to NEVER trust my taxes to them. And mine are simple, with one or two deductions a year. Anyone that is an independant contractor should find an accountant that handles specifically that. They would be most helpful to you.

I wouldn't go to H&R block. My friend had them do her taxes one year and they royally screwed them up (she had investment income) and she had to get them redone by somebody else later on. I'd say go to a real CPA, Certified Public Accountant.

Anyone have TurboTax they are willing to let me download???

I've used Turbo Tax in the past with very good results. However, I purchased a work vehicle several years ago and had a CPA do the taxes to ensure the write off was handled correctly.
I will continue to use CPAs, I've found that they are only a few hundred more than doing taxes yourself, and you get more peace of mind knowing they were done correctly (I have a finance degree, and still prefer to have a CPA do my taxes).
