if you have to keep talking, keep your vocal cords completely hydrated. drink water until you float!
get thee some garlic oil capsules and vitamin c in a big dose (1000mg+). no bug will survive..
I swear by Zithromax. It's a little pack of antibiotics (Some have 5 pills, some only have 3). You take two the first day with the five-pack ones, and one a day for the next 3 days. By the end of the day following that first dose, you feel HEAPS better. With the 3-pack.. it's one a day for 3 days.
If you've got a regular doctor.. Just ask for a Z-Pack. They'll either have one at the office, or they'll write you a script.
It kills anything bad in ya. Never fails.
I hope you feel better!!!!
i ended up doing 2000 mg of vitamin c before i when to bed, kept sucking on o.j. and today i feel 1 million times better, not comepltely healthy yet, but on my way

Abuse of Zithromax and Levaquin is why I see resistant bacteria to both macrolides and fluoroquinolones on a daily basis. PLEASE do not abuse antibiotics. Colds and upper respiratory tract infections are almost always viral, which makes taking antibiotics useless. Viral infections take between 5 days to 3 weeks to fully resolve. Green mucous does not mean an infection is bacterial. Viral infections cause green mucous as well. Antibiotic resistance is a HUGE problem. I have had way too many patients die these past 3 months because of being taken out by antibiotic resistant bacteria.Originally Posted by Rhiannon

Give it some time. It's definitely been going around. I've been seeing 2 dozen or so patients a day with the same symptoms. Heck, I've been struggling with it myself for 6 days now. It's miserable.Originally Posted by OZ_KYLE
Uh.. Yeah.. If you take them constantly, it would cause problems. That would be abuse, as with anything, and of course you'll build up an immunity. No one's suggesting abuse of the antibiotics. I've always been given Zithromax, and I've always been just fine. I trust my Doctors, and their advice.Originally Posted by Adrenaline
And antibiotics don't work on upper respiratory infections? Riiight. Doctors prescribe them for nothing then, right?

I swear by Cold FX... this shit is amazing... follow directions and finish them all and it works amazing. My cold was killed within 24 hours.

What you're suggesting is using the "big gun", broad spectrum antibiotics on viral infections that aren't even susceptible to antibiotics. Azithromycin is a restricted antibiotic in most medical centers, including the tertiary care center where I work. To prescribe it requires special approval. Unfortunately, there are irresponsible physicians out there prescribing it for financial gain. These antibiotics should be reserved for the most serious, life-threatening bacterial infections. Z-paks were developed for people with serious lower respiratory tract infections such as COPD or pneumonia. Upper respiratory tract infections are almost always viral...... it is relatively less common to see a bacterial infection, and then that is almost alway a "strep throat". Streptococcus is your typical gram positive bacteria that appears in chains. These are easily killed by focused, narrow spectrum antibiotics such as penicillin derivatives and cephalosporins. Using the big gun antibiotics breeds new subtypes of bacteria that are more dangerous and resistant to our best medications.Originally Posted by Rhiannon

The CDC has a national campaign to reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics. It is directed at doctors and patients. I just hope they can raise awareness for this important issue. The future is bleak if we entirely lose the ability to treat infections. Some research shows that in 10-15 years we may lose the fight against bacteria and the nation's average lifespan will revert to the levels before penicilliln was first invented.
So I guess my doctor is a bad boy for giving me the Z pack for my broncitis about 3 - 4 times a year? Seeing as its the only thing that clears it for me
Also I would like to know how your a 'doctor' at 26... my gf started her classes to go into med school at age 18 and she has been full time student.... and shes 27 now and still not a doctor... she *IS* an intern though. Hmm... I guess you skipped all your science classes before med school?

Nope. Chronic bronchitis is almost always bacterial and deserves a good antibiotic. That is an appropriate reason to dispense the medication.Originally Posted by Cally
Your friend, the intern, is a licensed physician. I'm in a very specialized field, so I'm still in training as well. I'm slightly ahead of the curve because I did a combined undergrad/med school accelerated program. When you see your intern friend next time, give her a big hug..... she needs itIt's a rough year......
I'm 33 and a board-certified emergency MD. I'll back up Adrenaline on the overuse of antibiotics. I see people everyday who have had the sniffles for 24 hours demanding antibiotics that will do nothing for their colds.
Cally, good luck to your intern friend. Nothing like doing 36 hour shifts and having to drive home when you are done.
BTW, I graduated med school with a guy who turned 21 during our senior year. He finished residency and started full time practice at 25. He also started college early and earned his chemistry degree is 3 years. Gave us all an inferiority complex.
OZ-Kyle, Try hot tea with honey and lemon for the laryngitis. Mix up a yummy mixture of equal parts honey, lemon juice, and whiskey. A spoonful is good for the cough. Honey has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. Lemon juice is full of vitamin C and the acidity helps to cut the mucus. Whiskey, besides dulling the pain, is also a good cough suppressant. Get well soon.
I'm sick as hell too. I slept from about 8 p.m. last night and just got up at around 2 p.m. today. I feel like shit. I started feeling it the night before last but thought I was just tired. Then yesterday at first I was like MAYBE I'm getting sick. Now I know I'm freakin sick! I started taking Coldherbs yesterday which is Vitamin C, Zinc and Echinacea. I'm also taking Sudefed non-drowsy cold medicine. I just finished up two courses of antibiotics in a row for an ear ache only about a week or two ago so I really don't want to take anymore antibiotics and they aren't always necessary anyway. I have to work at a damn state fair this weekend too which is really going to suck if I'm still sick.

I guess I should have gotten Zicam. I still feel like shit.
