    Default Bad Neighborhoods

So I'm in a city I don't know very well, and I want to go dance tonight at a club that has great reviews here, but now I'm chickening out because the neighborhood around it looks HORRIBLE. The club is in a little strip mall with an open parking lot, a torn-up street lined by orange barrels, and there was a group of thuggish types sitting around outside when I drove by (when none of the businesses, club included, were open).

I could really use the money, but I'm concerned. I don't need my car broken into, and I don't want to wind up in a scary situation. I definitely don't want to be hurt. I'm unarmed. The club itself is supposed to be a pleasant, low-mileage pastie club. (It's the Paper Moon in Little Rock, AR.)

What do I do? I'm worried. I want to go dance but I'm scared of the neighborhood!

Anyone been in a similar situation and have advice to share?

You normally work in downtown LA right?? I wouldnt worry much about Arkansas. Can't be ANY worse than Hollyweird. lol
If it makes you feel better, buy some pepper spray and a small knife. I always carry mine but I haven't needed to use them yet. Or park really close and always have the bouncer walk you to your car at night.

I don't have time to go shopping, and I wouldn't know where to buy them around here anyway. This is a last-minute worry. I would of course have the bouncer walk me to my car anyway, but I'm worried about my car being broken into, or some kind of trouble on the way back to the hotel.

You'd think Arkansas would be safer than L.A., but I read that Little Rock has the worst gang problem in the country, and an extremely high rate of violent crime. The guys sitting around the outside of the (closed) club this afternoon didn't exactly look like Mormons.

If you don't have a friend that can walk you into the club, then maybe just walk straight past the 'non-mormons' without making any conversation or eye contact. Act like you're in a hurry...but if they address you, just say 'hi' and be polite and then say nothing else while you speed-walk through the door.
Arrive JUST as the club is opening if you can (less of a chance for loitering jerks outside), or see if you can work the day shift(?).
I wouldn't know what to do about the car situation other than locking the doors and hiding anything valuable in the car.
Maybe this isn't the best club for you to be working at, dear. If it doesn't feel right, just trust your instincts. We wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you!

Yeah. I just know that sometimes I miss out on good times due to my excessive paranoia, and I've nothing else to do tonight anyway, and I do need the money. The club is only open from 8 pm to 4 am, so that's the shift I was going to work. I still haven't decided what to do yet but I guess I'll go shower and get ready just in case I decide to go.

Even the nicest stripclubs tend to be in shitty neighborhoods. The political powers that be generally won't stand for them opening anywhere else.

And so women like you, who just want to go to work and get home safely, might have to contend with the worst sort of scum on a nightly basis--and God help them if they have car trouble!

You might want to just drive by at opening time--the bouncers may chase away the thugs waiting around the entrance, out of courtesy to their dancers and patrons. Not to mention any concern for their success as a business. They might get way with hanging out a few hours before any staff show up, but get chased off then.

If it still looks shady or threatening, it might not be worth the stress (or worse) to make one night's earnings.

This is one of the major problems with the bible-beating types and family values politicos--who are supposedly completely powerless to hurt us in the adult business, according to some.

No way in hell are they ever going to let even an 'upscale', classier stripclub open up in a nice neighborhood--unless you are lucky enough to be in one of the few cities in this Land of the Free who don't have their head up their ass.

That nice trendy shopping center that would be great for a cool stripclub might be located less than 500 feet from a church or a school. Then the patrons would be tempted to wait another 5-6 hours in the parking lot to abduct young boys, since they remind them so much of that woman who just danced for them.

Please pardon my sarcasm--and it must be said that my club would look pretty weird next to a Lord & Taylor, lol...

I was thinking the same thing earlier today, Djoser. People bitch and worry about crime around strip clubs, but they only let strip clubs operate in criminal areas! I'm not worried about being inside the club, but I'm really worried about my car. She's a nice car and has out-of-state tags. I'm also worried about being pulled over, and what I tell one of Arkansas' finest if he asks what I'm doing out and about at four in the morning with glitter eyeshadow on. Basically... I'm just not in a good place tonight.

If I'm going to go, I need to get up and start putting my makeup on. *sigh*

Why don't you girls get guns? Christ, I carry one. There's classes and also training seminars that have experienced shootists that would be more than willing to teach a pretty woman how to shoot a gun.

As for the going in and getting out of the club - don't these joints have bouncers and outdoor staff? If they don't they are just asking for a lawsuit.

Thank goodness I've never had to fire mine but it has saved my life.

I had a gun when I lived in Memphis, but it isn't worth the hassle in California. Liberal states are hell on gunowners.

Make sure you park close to the front door, even in a bad neighborhood they tend to go for that nice car parked in the dark corner of the lot. Hopefully it will be well lit near the front, and the doorman will be keeping an eye out for trouble near the entrance. Maybe you could give him a 5$ bill as you come in to do so, too.

And don't drink, or at least not anytime close to when you'll be leaving. Then if you do get pulled over they won't have anything to hassle you about. Hopefully if you did get pulled over the guy would be impressed by your looks, and not be a jerk. Just be really polite and act innocent, you should be alright. The worst thing you can do is to get pissed off or overly defensive--this will play along with their preconceived notions of the bad stripper stereotype. I have known dancers here who really messed up that way.

Good luck, and let us know when you come back safe so we don't worry, lol...

I have mixed feelings on the whole gun control issue, but I f*cking love this...

UPDATE: Moot point anyway. I called the club to see if they were having their Amateur Night, and they've cancelled them. So I asked to work, and they said they weren't bringing anyone new in tonight since they have a feature. So never mind!

It sucks because I finally psyched myself up for it, but now I'm kind of relieved. It's a shame about missing out on the money, though. Oh well.

Girl, Go ahead and work! They are not going to do anything to you. That is 1 thing I dont like, when some body sees a low income area and a few people with a different lifestyle, They think something is going to happen!! If you dont do anything to them they will not mess with you!! The THUGGISH people are usually the people that are down to earth and not so stuck up. They are easy to get along with. And they are serious about money just like you are.

I live in a low-income area with a different lifestyle. That kind of thing doesn't bother me. But most of us can identify the difference between "poor" and "criminal," and this neighborhood was the latter. I was born into a housing project; I'm not afraid of broke people.

I was going to go in, but they have a feature tonight and I couldn't start tonight anyway.
