Bridgette, I agree about "Vanilla Sky." I hated that movie, but I loved "Abre los Ojos." Much was lost in the rather lame translation, in my opinion.

what can I say? I like war novels and movies.

It's "Saving Private Ryan".That was an incredibly good film.

^^^ chasing private ryan? Is that after they save him and he runs away?
I can't seriously believe that anyone thinks they are the only one who "gets" Steel Magnolias. Dig a little deeper, people!
Abre los ojos is indeed awesome; I never bothered seeing Vanilla Sky despite my usual love for Cameron Crowe. But I will say that I liked Elizabethtown, which was totally reamed by the critics.

LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!

HAHA - I only watched Vanilla Sky because it was the only one I hadn't seen that night at my fave $1 theater (the one with the serve-yourself butter machine)! Otherwise I never would've watched on principle. The remake is NEVER as good as the original. At least none I've seen.
I have watched Milo and Otis more times than I care to admit. It's just so damn cute![]()

I went through the same shit in jr high and high school, save I was too different (a Detroit boy in staid, conservative Maine), so had few friends. After a while I figured it was their loss. After beating my head against the brick wall a couple times with a couple of girls there, same conclusion. Seeing Spiderman beat his forehead into bloody smithereens everytime he meets the girl, and turning her down cold whenever she does offer herself up to him--well, I just can't relate.
But I have the utmost respect for the comic drawing, that is hard work--and how very cool that your dad did that! I have long ago given up the idea that my dad would ever apologize to me for some of the disrespect I have received, but he loves me and has a fair amount of respect now, so I'll settle for that.
I remember you mentioned you drew, but was kinda tired so didn't pursue the subject--as I normally would being an artist myself.

It was a great movie too, and meticulous in its attention to detail and realism. They basically built real Tiger tanks for it, or so close it's hard to tell the difference. Thankfully Spielberg spared us his usual overkill on the tearjerking sentimental stuff, which makes most of his films seriously flawed in my mind, or completely intolerable.
Tampadancer, if you like war movies, check out Das Boot, preferably the director's cut, in widescreen with a big TV, and the stereo hooked up to the sound, lol. The book is great, too, though slightly darker. Quite accurate as far as the U-Boat service goes.
I believe the same people did a nice movie called Stalingrad, which never went over as well, but is a quite accurate depiction of what went on there--except again it was if anything more brutal. Much harder to find, I found it in the foreign films section.
Enemy at the Gates was also good, especially if you like whatshisname, the heartthrob actor--I forget. It's based on a true story as well--Stalingrad again--and was filmed under very realistic conditions--they basically built a ruined city for it, complete with ferry landings. Khrushchev was very much as he is portayed, and got a little nicer when he achieved top dog position after the war. The woman in real life got blown to hell by a landmine and lost most of her limbs, but nonetheless got married and had kids. The book is excellent but actually deals very little with the sniper duels.

Why did you have to remind me about this one, I watched it six times in one weekend, and I'd totally forgotten it existed. Now I'm logging into netflix to put the lotion in the basket.Originally Posted by LOGANLAKEN

The speech Bill Pullman makes in Independence Day is the only thing that has brought me to the verge of crying in over 15 years.
I think Galaxy Quest is one of the funniest movies ever, but noone else agrees with me. Also, James Bond has nothing on Derek Flint.Bill Pullman: In less than one hour aircraft from here will join others from around the world, and you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind..... mankind... that word should have a new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore... We will be united in our common interest. Perhaps it is fate that today is the fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, opression, or persecution, but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live, to exist, and should we win today, the fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the whole world declared in one voice 'We will not go quietly into the night, we will not vanish without a fight, we are going to live on, we are going to survive, today, we celebrate our Independence Day!

2nd: My Blue Heaven its soooooo old but its still one of my favorites
the one noone seems to get is This Girls Life, I love that movie... Its about a girls struggle in the Porn industry (really the struggle on her relationships both intimate and with family)... Plus the girl, I can't remeber her name right now is HOT!!! It was never really publicized so a lot of people never saw it.

Spiderman - hmm. I don't like movies that normalize that kind of behaviour.
And no, I don't mean getting super powers. I just hate movies that take this weird, obsessive behaviour and act like it is sweet and romantic. She's lived next to for 20 years! Don't sit drooling over her from a freaking distance! Ask her out, if she says no, move the fuck on! This is not sweet! It's stalking. It's weird and bizarre and shows serious signs of instability.
Plus - you hardly know this girl. What exactly do you like so much about her anyway? All we know about her is that she likes to date mean assholes. Obsessed with an idea, not a person. This is not normal. And it's not abnormal in a cute or benign way. So why is this kind of thing constantly represented as being something that "nice" guys do? Bad guys do this. Bad, bay guys.
My movie: House of Mirth. I think everyone "gets" it, but I watch it and I cry, and cry and I hate Eric Stoltz for being such a bad, judgmental man.

Jenny: though the movie was an excellent portrayal, of the comic, the comic did not mimic the locations.Originally Posted by Jenny
I disagree on the stalking. I've seen the movies a couple times, and tho I agree with insecurities, they grew up together as friends and his stumbling block was fear that she'd never want him more than that. In the comic he even fell in love with her best friend "Gwen Stacy" who died (they merged gwen and maryjane together for the movie) when green goblin dropped her off the bridge and spiderman's webbing (synthetic in the comic) was too elastic and the whiplash broke her neck.
MaryJane and Peter Parker were always close friends and he always looked out for her but always wanted to be with her. That's not stalking, thats every day life of the nice guy without the balls to take a risk, or cherishes a friendship too much to change it. Peter Parker tho, always told himself he wasn't good enough.
Again, I fail to see the stalking in the movies or in the comic. He seemed to be able to not focus on her a lot, just focus on being the kind of guy she would want to be with while still being himself. Who HASN'T done that?![]()

For what it's worth, I was deeply touched by the message in the "Spiderman" movies, considering how rarely I see altruistic behavior. Those "X-Men" movies are way overstuffed, though. (I'm all excited about Beast being in the new one.)
OK, these are not well-known movies outside of Latin American culture: a series called "La India Maria," about a little Mexican woman of indigenous descent, who has lots of crazy adventures but always retains her folky integrity.
