Default certain amount of money for savings each week

I just wanted to share something helpful with everyone. It seems a lot of dancers (including myself) make lots of money and don't save any of it. All last year, I seemed to always be broke. At the end of the year, I added up how much I had paid in house fees and started feeling quite sick. Why don't I pay myself that much money? So this year, I decided upon an amount of money to set aside for savings every week without fail. I"m not making anymore money, but somehow I am managing to save and not be broke. If for some reason I need to take anything out of my savings, I write down the amount and add it to that weeks amount I usually add and put it back. Happy saving everyone!

What a good suggestion... Even though we don't have house fees it still costs me a lot of $$ just to go to work: Parking, tip-outs, gas to get there, dinner/drinks before work, tolls. And thats after before make-up, outfits, nails, gym, tanning, yada, yada, yada...

It costs a lot of $$ to be in this business...

I think I'm going to figure out how to set up a plan for myself like that...

    Thanks...

Lets see - I work once a week and the house fee is $15... id be saving - woohoo - $60 a MONTh! LOL...

No, it really is a good idea... I know some clubs fees are outfreaking rageous. Remember tho, if you put the money into an account you will have a papertrail which means you will have to claim it on your taxes. I am by no means condoning not leaving a papertrail to not pay your taxes....

here's some small tips that do add up:

    * coupons! grab grab grab those coupons!
    * change- save all your change up in a jar and spend it on groceries when it gets full- use the self-checkout at the store.
    * dont eat out. pack a meal for work (it will also be healthier)
    * do you have cable? do you live in an area where you can get reception with an antenna? make the switch! why PAY to watch tv! there's a library full of free books...
    * is there any clothes/furniture/etc that you don't use/need? sell it on ebay or craigslist
    * car pool to work and get gas money that way
    * babysit or do house cleaning on your days off for some extra $
    * do you get your nails/hair done? you could do them yourself. my friends are always wanting me to cut and dye their hair- cheaper!
    * can you sew? if not learn, then you can make you own clothes.

    LOL...

Babysit or cleaning on my day off? If I wanted to work on my day off, I'd work!

but yes, saving is good. I'm constantly amazed how few dancers save their money. It's hard and takes discipline....and less fun than spending it, but I'm all into hoarding my money.

I always saved 10% of my nightly earning before I spent money elsewhere. I just pretended the money was gone and then budgeted accordingly.

^^^ A set percentage per night, that's a great idea. I always save a set amount per week, but then on bad weeks I start stressing that I wont be able to save my quota, and on good weeks I feel guilty for having a lot of money left after putting away my quota. It just sucks that I'm so addicted to saving I'll probably try to put away like 60% of my money per day.

In December, I started putting $100 a night directly into a separate envelope in my safe. If I make more than $500 or $600, I put $200 in. I've already saved up enough to go on vacation to Hawaii for Spring Break, staying at a four-star resort while I'm there, and now I've got 1/3 of the money I'll need to get my boobs redone next summer. Anyone who makes more than $100 a night should be able to save SOMETHING (if you can resist the spacious apartment or luxury sports car).

when I was dancing live regularly, I used to divide up my money into different envelopes as soon as I got home from the club ...

    - first envelope 33% for federal and state estimated taxes
    - second envelope 33% for 'regular budget monthly bills'
    - third envelope 33% for 'discretionary spending'

Every week when I bought groceries or whatever I would take the money out of the second envelope. Every month I would sit down and do all of my monthly bills and pay them out of the second envelope. If the contents of the second envelope came up short or extra at the end of the month, I would square it up with envelope three.

Every three months I would sit down and do estimated taxes out of envelope one. If the content of the first envelope came up short or extra at the end of three months, I would square it up with envelope three.

After the third month's bills were done, and the quarterly estimated taxes were paid, I would then see how much money was left in envelope three. I would then first use part of that money for some major item that I NEEDED (like a new clothes dryer), next use part of that money for additional investments, and lastly use what was left of that money for something that I wanted (like a vacation).

I have four savings goals right now (emergency fund, credit card bill, and two summer trips) and use the envelope system. At the end of the night when I get home, I record my total gross, total net, co-workers and dances given. Then I divvy up the money by 20s into the envelopes and then set aside the rest for whatever I'll need in between then and my next shift. I'm reaching my goals far more quickly than I ever used to!

It's also a good motivational tool. Even if I've had a crappy night and netted $100, I still have $20 for groceries for the next day and the knowledge that I'm $20 closer to each of my goals. Allocating money for bills in chunks is a good strategy, too (if I owe $50 in electricity this month, then I can just set aside $25 into the utilities envelope on two nights).

Oh yes, and each envelope is squirreled away in a different area. In the hopefully unlikely scenario of having theft in my house, a 25% loss is bearable... but not 100%!
