Default Nice Job, Mr. Vice President

He's a model gun owner, eh?

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.

Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed him with shotgun pellets on Saturday while the two were hunting at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.

Armstrong said Whittington was mostly injured on his right side, with the pellets hitting his cheek, neck and chest, and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Whittington was in stable condition Sunday, said Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System.

Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president was with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin, Texas, and his wife at the hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Armstrong said she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shot at a covey of quail late afternoon on Saturday.

Whittington shot a bird and went to look for it in the tall grass, while Cheney and the third hunter walked to another spot and found a second covey.

Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong told the Associated Press in an interview.

"The vice president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."

The shooting was first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

She said Whittington was bleeding but not very seriously injured, and Cheney was very apologetic.

"It broke the skin," she said. "It knocked him silly. But he was fine. He was talking. His eyes were open. It didn't get in his eyes or anything like that."

She said emergency personnel traveling with Cheney tended to Whittington, holding his face and cleaning up the blood.

"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."

Armstrong said Cheney is a longtime friend who comes to the ranch to hunt about once a year. She said Whittington is a regular, too, but she thought it was the first time the two men hunted together.

"This is something that happens from time to time. You now, I've been peppered pretty well myself," said Armstrong.

Vice Presidents and quail hunting don't mix

Oops. That wasn't a bird, it was a lawyer!

Dan Quayle had his potatoe. Al Gore invented the internet. Now Dick Cheney has something the press and pundits will never let him live down.

Um, this is fairly common in quail hunting.

Yeah, but this time, we'll teach them how to aim properly. heh

    "Oh, yeah...they're just blanks, sir..."

Actually, with the common sense that goes through Bush's head, you could probably tell him that the phone call is for him...LOL

^ Pellet spray during quail hunting is fairly common by the very nature of the hunt. Not like they were using .50 rounds to hunt quail, dude.

CO is right. Bird hunting (dove, quail, turkey) is typically the big accident cluster, because you flush them out and track them in your gun sight. Sometimes you turn and fire while still at a close angle to the ground.

I guess we could say that Whittington was in an undisclosed location.

I don't think this incident is something to be laughed at, but I know the comedians will have a field day with it. Any hunting acident should be taken seriously, even if they are 'common' like peppering. Peppering is a common accident during bird hunting, too common and its preventable. The only humor I see in it is that I'm happy the guy didn't lose an eye or get hurt worse than he did.

Why do you always call me dude? Point is, it is NOT a very common occurance that the Vice President of the United States shoots somebody, accident or not, quail hunting or no quail hunting. Stop being such an apologist dude.

I wish that man would be more careful with guns. He might someday start a war or something.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

RH - Dude, my point is that it could (and frequently does) happen to anyone when quail hunting. The fact that it happened to VP Cheney is not indicative of anything in particular.

Stop being a BOOOOOOOOOOOOSHHHHH is teh dephil lemming.

FYI, the dude thing comes off as a bit condescending.

    Where did I mention BOOOOOOOOOOOSHHHHH???

The guess here it that thousands upon thousands of people go quail hunting every year and have NO problems what-so-ever.

Had this been Clinton or Gore I'm sure you'd see the humor in it, stop being such a GOP partisan.

If I were out hunting quail and the morning's coffee needed to be relieved, I would find a nice bush and piss on it.

From my background as a youth on the rolling hills of rural Wisconsin, shooting your hunting companions is not socially accepted, nor is it the mark of someone properly trained, and properly executing the hunt.

Now, Mr. Oil Business Veep (Our VP), was using a 28 gauge shotgun loaded with birdshot.
The lawyer dude can be lucky that it was quail hunting with light shot or he would be dead.

I'm sorry, but shooting your companions while hunting is simply not the mark of a competant huntsman, and would make me question wanting to be around such an individual. (Especially while hunting.)

Is this yet another example of shooting before the target is known? Or making decisions
based on gut instincts and not facts and the real situation? Or is it simply someone who doesn't know what he is doing on decision making? More than likely it is an old man with a severe heart condition, who mistakenly shot the republican party lawyer in Texas on the
land of the former national republican party chairman, Mrs. Armstrong.

The republicans are shooting their lawyers?

I think I'll pass on the quail hunting, especially with someone who is so eager to kill something he shoots his fucking friend, lol...

How apropos for a guy like Cheney to do this.

This is way better/worse than the potato thing. I can't wait to see all the Saturday Night Live skits about it, except I'll be working and have to catch the reruns, no doubt.

They wasted absolutely no time with the parody "Cheney's Got A Gun" on the Bob & Tom show this morning. I'm sure there will be WAV files circulating around the net in due time.
