Staying focused on dancing and classes

I just finished my online principles of marketing test and made 108 out of 150 points. I did not really study for this test. I work five days a week one of those days seems to get absorbed up sleeping in recovery after my work week. I also must use my other day for errands(groceries, bill paying, gas fill up,etc) and this is the only day I see this semester I am only taking six hours, but I must admit I am not the best at managing time. I do not even have a daily planner. I really need to stay focused on school and work. Do any dancers out there balance the two as well ?? How do you structure your time?? Both my classes are online. This has made it easier, but I am still strugling to meet deadlines.

There's definitely something to be said about getting a weekly planner. At the beginning of every semester I organize all my major due dates throughout the semester. I'm a fulltime student and doing that really helps me figure out how many nights I can dance a week depening on what I need to get done that particular week.

Since the beginning of the semester I've been working like a fiend doing 3-5 nights a week. But at the same time I know that near the end of the semester I won't be able to work as much. Seriously, if you want to do well in your classes don't feel bad taking a night off here and there to get what you need to get done. Yeah, you'll make a little less money but its worth it to do well in your classes. Good luck!

I am a mother of 3, wife, dancer, and full-time student. Up till tonight I was working 4 nights and going to school the other 3 nights. I finally have another day off from work to do the household chores, but most importantly my school work. Hubby is a great help with the house and the kids. I have a planner right now, but really want and need a palm pilot, with all of my deadlines and appointments. It is hard to work and go to school, however very rewarding to find out that you made the Presidents and Deans list at school.

Get a planner, and set out all of your due dates. When you get up in the morning, look at it and decide what you need to do. Or, just plan on dedicating one hour first thing every morning to school work.

Get a day planner. Personally what I use is an Excel spreadsheet with 15 minute intervals from 0500 to 2000. Block off the time you need to do A, and time you need to do X. Over-estimate the amount of time everything takes.

Also practice backwards planning. Think of all the things you need to get done in the day, when they need to get done by and how long they take. Then start counting backwards from the cut off time. "Z done by 6:00pm, takes at least 60 minutes, so Y needs to be done by 4:45, and that takes 60 minutes so X needs to be done by 3:30, and X takes 30 minutes so W needs to be done by 2:45." Do that for your entire day. Every day.
Never stand begging for that which you have the power to earn.

I can't give any more advice besides what everyone up here said, but I just think that's interesting b/c a lot of girls find that one of the perks of dancing is being able to make full time job money without working full time job hours. mm

wow, managing school and work is hard. i don't know how you people who have kids do all three!

the planner is your friend, especially if you have a memory like me..or, rather, lack thereof. try to set aside a little time of studying each day...even if it is only for 20 minutes. and by this, i do not mean homework...i mean reviewing what you did in class. studies show that if you don't look over material twice w/in 24 hours, it doesn't stick with your longterm memory.

if your club is slow, like mine, try taking homework with you. then again, for some, this may be a bad idea. it has always helped me, though.

you say online classes are easier. more power to you! i do not have enough discipline to do online classes! i need a teacher forcing me to come to class everyday by saying that if i don't, my grade will drop. perhaps make your own schedule..saying that things are due two days before they really are..or something along those lines. this way, if needbe, you'll have extra time.

sleep is also very important. 5 days is alot to work. i'm gonna be completely honest...i take 15 credits, BUT i only work 2-3 days. just like everyone else said...feel free to take a day off to study, if u can afford to. good grades mean a higher GPA, which means more of a chance for a scholarship...plus they will probably look better when you go to get another job. (i am just assumming this...but it makes sense.)

i wish you the best of luck. life's a balancing act. you can do it; iti's all about time managment. also, some teachers will work with you if they know that you are working so much. if you give them a reasonable exscuse and show that you are putting forth effort, many are understanding.

What helps me to stay focused on classes is thinking of the guy with the black rimmed glasses and white beard that sits in the darkest corner of the club smelling of Pall Malls and Doritos and trying to grind you into his sweatpants on the slowest of nights.

Seriously, it really helps. Study, study, study, get that degree!

Besides that you need to keep yourself on a schedule of reviewing your work every day, not just before tests. Making flashcards helps too, that way any time you have a few minutes you can study without getting your all your books out.

Working 5 nights a week while in school would be way too much for me. I could do 2-3 nights at the most.

I'm a full time student, and this semester I'm only working Thurs-Sat so that I have weeknights free to do homework. Last semester I still worked full time (5-6 nights per week- 9 hours a night) and went to school full time, and it was way too hard. So with all the money I saved up from working so much last semester, I'm taking it easy this semester and just working weekends. You should cut back on work, because school is definetely more important. You're paying tons of money to go to school, so that should be your main concentration so all that money isn't going to waste.

Also, anyone "on top of their game" at work would only need to work 3-4 nights a week to make $1000+ (after tax and 'club expenses'). Besides managing your time (day planner!!!), you may need to look at your finances as well. What I mean is if you are working so much, is it because of your expenses are so much each week? Can you not make $1000+ (after tax) each week from working 3-4 nights?

Take that extra night off. Give yourself one day to sleep, one day to run errands and one day to "do school". Also give yourself time daily to go over your notes and study.

--don't work five days a week. Cut it down to 4, or even 3. Even one extra day makes such a difference. How much could you get done in the 14-16 hours a day that you're awake?

--a day planner or portable calendar is a godsend. What I like to do in addition to having a portable calendar is to make up an hourly schedule and stick it to the inside cover of the calendar. I pencil in time for classes, homework/study, work, gym, acro practice, and a few blocks for miscellaneous errands, chores, etc....that way I can see in black and white that there is indeed time to get everything done...IF i stick to the schedule!

--if both of your classes are online, and there is no set time to "meet for class", it might help to decide on definite times during the week that you're going to sit down and read/learn material/do homework...then treat it as if it's an in-stone commitment similar to a normal class. If you decide that 10-11:30 on tuesdays and thursdays is your "class time", pencil it in and make sure to do it at those times.

This is tearing me apart. I need to work an extra day this week and Im scheduled 2 other days later this week. I already worked on Sunday. I have 2 quizzes tomorrow and I really want to work but I really want too pass my quizzes. They make up a large portion of my grade in those classes.
Something tells me that I should just concentrate on school and pass instead of going to work.
Someone tell me Im doing the right thing.

Yeah you can always recover from a little lost money, but you might not be able to recover if you fail quizzes and tests in class. I just try to think that the more I kill myself now the better off I will be later.
