    Default scared to death.

I finally get properly medicated for my insomnia and such and life is GRAND!

For quite a while now. Well, a few months, but yanno...

    Until this weekend.

    Sleep Paralysis.

    NOT FUN.

I start so slowly drift to sleep when it hits me. I cant move. ANYTHING. I cant open my eyes. I can speak.... scream for help to my male right beside me. It lasts for about 30 seconds to about 3 minutea at a time.

Now, according to doctors and the interweb, it happens to just about everyone at least once in their lives.

I've had it happen about 30 times in the past 2.5 days.

I am scared to sleep. I am scared that I will never come out of it.... stuck in this paralysis forever. And NO doctors in my area know a damn thing about it or how to make it stop. I have to go to Ft Lauderdale to a special clinic if I want help.

I swear I just want to find an actual tall building in this state of small buildings and jump.

Yikes Paige that is scary. Maybe you should try to find a different medication? Or maybe it is too high a dose...?

The meds have not changed in quite a few months. I cant figure that it's that. Some say it might be narcolpsey.... but I really dont know.

Yikes is right. I too have taken sleeping pills many times before and nothing like this had happened. Narcolepsy sounds plausible.

Whoa narcolepsy? Here is some info to check out: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/n...narcolepsy.htm

I hope not. I would take that trip to ft lauderdale though just to make sure. Take a bus.

Hey Paige, this condition has been haunting me since I was a teenager. I never knew what was wrong with me and doctors (psychologists, by matter of fact) did not even properly diagnose it until my early twenties.

Sleep Paralysis is very scary. My eyes would be semi-open and I could see my surrouindings but everything was dark even if it was daytime. I could even hear voices in the background sometimes. But no matter what I would try and try to move, to wake up, to scream, to fall of the bed but just couldn't budge. The tension would build up so much I thought I was going to die. The worst part when I finally would wake up there was this HUGE force pulling me back into sleep and the cycle would repeat itself over and over again. And sometimes, I would see "shadow people", this part is really creepy because you think they are coming to get you and you can't move.

I went on Halcion (for insomnia), then Xanax, and finally tapered down to Zoloft. I have a couple of epidoses a year now but I notice that they come around if I am under high stress and not sleeping regularly. I swear a bad diet and cigs seem to bring them on too.

From what I studied, it is a form of narcolepsy. You should tell you doctor about this. They may want to send you to a sleep clinic for observation. I have also read that it can actually cause stroke/heart attack if really severe and not treated.

Good luck and let us know.

Sleep paralysis is a form of narcolepsy in which a person can't move/speak for a period of time. Not much is known about his condition yet, other than that is is usually caused when people go directly into REM sleep without going through all the stages of sleep that normally precede REM sleep. When we go into REM sleep, our breathing becomes more rapid, irregular, and shallow, our eyes jerk rapidly, and our arm and leg muscles become temporarily paralyzed. REM sleep usually occurs about 70-90 minutes after we fall asleep, so we've already been deeply asleep for a while before we go into REM sleep. People with narcolepsy or Sleep Paralysis go into REM sleep right away, before they are deeply asleep, so it is very easy to awaken and find yourself unable to move or talk, because you are unable to move during REM sleep because your muscles are temporarily paralyzed during this time. Vivid, terrifying hallucinations can often accompany the sleep paralysis.
Antianxiety drugs are often used for sleep disorders, but can cause dependency. I'm not sure what other treatments are available for this problem, but like I said, not much is really known about it, which is why the doctors in your area don't seem to know anything about it.

That is scary. I've had instances where I felt like I was awake but I was seeing things like vines all over my bedroom or a person standing by my bed that wasn't there. I figured I was half dreaming still while waking? One time I actually did scream though so I guess it's not the same thing but it still is pretty scary.

I wonder if it is whatever meds you are taking? Maybe after a while they can make it happen because you fall asleep too fast?

Would you be interested in accupressure to reduce the anxiety? If you are, PM me and I'll walk you through it...

I have this happen from time to time, often with the illusion that someone is there also, it is pretty horrible! I've noticed it happens more often if I get overly warm in bed (I think I recall hearing that that it can happen due to overheating...) Anyway the main thing for me was to know what it is and that it doesn't last forever, so I'm not scared once I realise whats going on. It's more of an irritation more than anything once I've made that realisation of what is happening. You just need to know that you will snap out of it - tell yourself before you go to sleep that it's just a thing that may happen, but if it does you will come out of it!

that sucks. Something like this has happened to me when I have been either sick or really exhausted. It's an awful feeling like you want to scream, move, just snap out of it and u can't. I'm also able to see my surrounding like if I were awake but I'm not. Such a weird state. I would dream that I go up over and over again.

I can see my room exact, I even thought my roommate knocked on the door and called my name. She never did and I was asleep, but the craziest part was how much I wanted to wake up and couldn't

this happens to me sometimes too....but not nearly as frequently. it can be a form of narcolepsy, but it can also be from your sleep med....especially if you take it for a time. there are many out there, so you might have to experiment. sometimes changing your dosage can help. your doctor can hopefully help with this. i also have seen the "shadow people" when stuck or astral projecting/lucid dreaming. they might be a projection of your subconscious...so realizing they can't hurt you can help. if stuck...think "move" for a certain part of your body..concentrate, and then you can wake up.

sometimes this happens to me and i can float out of my body (my mind creates this illusion)...very weird. anyways...there is a website http://www.sleepnet.com which talks about sleep paralysis and other things. i hope you feel better. you are not losing your mind..this is more common than you think.

Sounds like a sleep clinic is in order. We have a very good one here near my home/work, and they regulate breathing, REM, BP and heart rate for a 24 hour period. You can't take any drugs however before. And they must be out of your system before you go.

I have only talked with a few people who doctors claimed had this. They do not prescribe sleep meds. Only a few antidepressants have shown some promise.

Don't you have CFS? Now this? Hmmm you are doing the right thing by going to lauderdale for a check.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. I've had it happen ALL my life. I get them at least once a week, sometimes more. I don't take any medications or anything, they just happen naturally.
I don't really know how to wake up, but I find it that the more nervous I get, the harder it is. I also allucinate and see guy (sometimes is the same sometimes not) right beside me. It gives me the creeps, and I start yelling at him, but that's even worse. I'd say try to calm down, don't try to wake up, just go with the flow, and you'll wake up. At least that works for me most of the times.

I swear I feel like I have every sleep problem. It boggles my mind how I can have insomnia, CFS, and NOW sleep paralysis. I feel like a walking contridiction.

I hear tell about a sleep clinic in Palm Bay but I dont know if they do anything with sleep paralysis.... I know the one in Ft Lauderdale specifically says that it does. I just need to make some calls. Whee....

So it's fairly well established that I need to go to Ft Lauderdale to get help. Ok, fine. When I can afford to do that. So Im at the bar and I'm tired but ok.... so many times of JUST about to fall asleep then paralysis has me not sleeing well. I finally give up and get dressed. Gonna call it a night and try to rest at home when I keel. I guess I fainted, slamming my head hard on a locker. Out cold... but only for a while. I come to, but of course I CANT MOVE.... or speak, or open my eyes. So the EMTs are there, everyone is trying to wake me but they dont understand that I AM awake... So onto the stretcher I go.... and they cant fit it out the dressing room door due to the way it's built... SO THEY WHEEL ME OUT ON THE STAGE! Oh Christ.... I can hear them doing this. I can hear the Gods damned DJ announce who it is their wheeling away!

So I spend the night in the ER... in and out of paralysis... and of course, they cant do anything.

And I find out some bartender told the EMT I took GHB! Egads. WTF?

    *sigh*

I'm mortified to go back to work now.

I've experienced sleep paralysis for years, most frequently during periods of heightened anxiety...it truly is horrible. I'm not on any medication for it, but there are a few things I've found that help a little. When you finally do snap out of it, change your position in bed before you go back to sleep - aka, if you were on your back, turn over onto your stomach - seems to make it less likely to happen multiple times in one night. When you're in the middle of an attack, try to focus on feeling your breathing - with the rest of your body "paralyzed" the motion of your breathing is the pretty much the only thing still going on. Some people recommend that you try very hard to focus on moving part of your body just a little bit, which will apparently "break the spell", but I've never been able to do it, and trying very hard to move and failing just freaks me out worse.

What did the ER doc say? Surely, you won't take any more of that medication? Have you tried Lunesta? It's a new sleeping pill that I keep hearing good things about. You should also have the doc write something stating that you weren't on "drugs" that night to clear up any confusion at work. Let us know that you are okay. I am worried about you.

I would say now you are having some serious side effects. What is it called? I do some research for you. Until you are off that med dont drive or avoid it at all costs. *hugs* I hope anymore scary stuff doesnt happen to you.

oh god paige that is totally scary! Perhaps you are having some type of seizures? I have been having a lot of sleep trouble lately and that scares me. I don't know if you have insurance but all this stuff is so frustrating because it's EXPENSIVE to go to all these docs. I'm insured as a contractor on my own, and I don't want my ins co thinking I have pre-existings so I'm scared to go to ANY doc, plus it wouldn't be covered anyway. I hope you can get this figured out. I know how frustrating sleep problems are but that is downright scary. It really seems like some kind of little seizures because you blank out. It could be the Lunesta maybe building up in your system? I don't know how that one works but a friend of mine told me I shouldn't take Ambien because it puts you in a minicoma.

Is Lunesta what caused you to have these episodes Paige? What did the E.R Doc say? Ambien caused me to have hallucinations.
