    Default Buying a Diamond

The love of my life is buying me a diamond for Valentines Day. He gave me the option of choosing where I wanna get it from. Im in the L..A. area and dont wanna go over 5k (dont wanna break him since he's already done so much for me)I looked up on the Robins Bros. website and Zales and thought they were kinda pricey for what they were offering. Any help ?

    Hahaha Deo

Goldengrl.. You're very lucky that you had a warning. Wanna know how I learned that my husband was going to propose? He walked into Kay Jewelers, and being the nosy little bitch I am, I followed him. He sat down at the counter and told the saleslady "I'm looking for an engagement ring.. For her" (as he pointed to me).

He did let me pick it out and all that. It was great. A surprise---but a good one.

I suggest Kay Jewelers. Their prices aren't heart-attack inducing, and they'll go through the whole thing with you. They're very cool there. My diamond was originally set in Platinum, but I hate Platinum. So, he had them send it away and set it in White Gold for me. We had the ring in about a week.

    Good luck and have fun!

Unlike clothes, L.A. does not have any local diamond market which match the efficiency of the NY diamond dealers market. (I'm originally from LA and miss the garment district.)

If you're going to buy one for 5K, you should consider buying a diamond wholesale from a dealer. Six years ago, I bought an engagement stone from a NY dealer over one of the web-based services and saved 40%. (Read - get 40% bigger and better quality on your finger for the same price!)

It works sort of like E-Bay, but only from the NY dealers, who control basically all of the inventory which ends up in the local stores. In my search, I ended up finding a stone which was posted on the site from a Hassidic (sp?) Jewish dealer in the diamond district of NY (his name was Cheim and he was very hard to understand on the phone with his heavy accent). I was scared stiff giving him my credit card number, but the next day, I got a Fed-Ex with a beautiful stone which I had put on a very simple setting for $90. The jewler at the store was a bit miffed because I got the stone for a better price than he could have. I told him not to worry, after I popped the question, we used him to change the setting to something she wanted.

BTW - the 40% savings was confirmed by an appraiser we had to get for insurance.

It sounds like your'e already in the loop so you can cut out a step.

Of course, you know how the internet is always changing, I don't know if the site I used is still the best, but here it is:
    http://www.thediamondbuyingguide.com...-diamonds.html

I'd recommend googling "diamond dealer" to see what you got.

Most of all - congratulations and best wishes with you guy.

Diamonds are a rip off and are brought to market on the backs of slaves. The vile thugs in Africa finance their atrocities with diamond sales.

Well to answer the question without trying to save the environment, stop global warming, cure AIDS, and figure out why water flushes counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere....or is is southern?

Go on the web. The largest and best value is at Borsheims in Omaha. A Warren Buffett company.

I am looking for a new star sapphire...let me know if you run across a really nice one.
