    Default How Relevent is VD?

VD being Valentine's Day, of course.

Now that Valentine's Day as passed, Im curious as to how relevant it is to one's relationships, past and or present.

Valentine's Day has long ago lost any personal significance to me, and not because of some bitter end or ends to past romance. Being in the bar/restaurant industry for so long, I have always worked on VD. My ex, also being in the same industry, always did too. It became just another workday for me (and us). If we didn't exchange anything more then a "Happy Valentine's Day" and a card, we were perfectly okay with that.

I haven't had a "significant other" since my marriage ended, but the lack of real relevance of VD still exists. I don't get all melancholy etc over a lack or or a loss of serious relationships when the day comes around. Its really still an "eh, another hectic work day".

I expressed this to an another bartender who I work with who has been at this as long as I have. Her thoughts on the day mirror my own.

Yet, yesterday, I saw a number of examples of people who feel its utterly critical to either treat their significant other special and perfect on that particular day, or felt it was utterly critical that they be treated special and perfect on VD. One gentlemen went so far as to say that our service ruined his date, because he got the wrong item (and it turns out that he ordered the wrong thing - he fucked up, not us). His demeanor totally shook the very new waitress who was trying her best to help. VD was THAT important to him and his date.

Is it an honest to goodness big deal to you? My curiosity is active about this.

I don't think it's really a big deal---at least not for me. If your significant other is important enough to you, you show them what they mean to you every single day. You don't need a specific day set aside to celebrate how you feel about eachother.

For some though, I guess it's vital to the relationship. I don't get it.

Much like Halloween, Valentine's Day is just a clandestine scam set up by the candy lobby.

Sorry...thought this was an STD-related thread.

    I didn't know anyone still cared about Valentine's Day. It's a Hallmark-propagated conspiracy!

I don't wait for the 14th of February to be good to women in my life.

I'm glad ya'all are romantic the rest of the year, but I see Valentine's Day (much like Halloween) as a day to be frivolously silly and for it to be okay. Get the urge to make cherry cupcakes with pink frosting and heart candies? OKAY! Feel like going out and buying myself some new frivolous polka dotted underwear? ROCK ON! Feel like going out to a restaurant and treating myself to an excessively fattening treat because it's a "special" day? COOL! Feel like getting naughty gifts for S.O.'s, or friends? FUN TIMES! Feel like trading valentine presents with someone for the heck of it? SWEET!

Really, Valentine's Day to me is a lot like Mardi Gras or Cinco De Mayo...you can make it have a lot of personal significance, or you can treat it like a special day to be a wacky human being. And if you have another wacky human being to run amok with? WOO HOO!

Edited Note: Now, obviously all this stuff can happen on any other day and still be perfectly cool, but there's something about setting aside a special day to make it even more special. If you don't have a special day, there's a good chance that you'll procrastinate on especially crazy, silly, fun (or romantic) gestures until "some other day."

It's not a big deal for us...we just use it as an excuse to splurge a little more than usual(dinner, our hotel room, etc.). It's just a bit of whimsical fun, IMO.

It all depends if I have someone special at the time. It's nice to do a little something extra now and then. I had to feel good about the other DJ, a young guy, getting his girlfriend some nice earrings--apparently she was ecstatic, and he was grinning ear to ear on his way to take her to dinner.

If it's something people do once a fucking year to 'show they care', then it's utterly worthless. And retail industry attempts to play on that are a joke. The worst I ever saw was the commercial that showed the dork, hoping to get laid at last, sending his girlfriend a tacky macho teddy bear.

it is simply not true to say that Valentine's Day or Halloween are creations of candy corporations or Hallmark.

o, why is everyone against valentine's day? it's basically a day reserved for sex and chocolate. now i agree, the focus on heterosexual couples is a little stupid and out of touch, but that focus permeates our entire culture, not just this holiday. and yeah, it's commercialized. so is everything else. am i supposed to stop enjoying my vibrator because it's produced by a big company? am i supposed to hate chocolate because it's advertised alot?

so yes, ignore the commercialization. but don't go all anti-chocolate and anti-sex on me, people! and of course, we should also ignore this heterosexual couple focus. you can have sex and chocolate by yourself, or with any combination of people! you can have lesbian sex with chocolate, masturbation with chocolate, gay sex with chocolate, orgies with chocolate, or even put on a webcam show with chocolate. this is a wonderful thing. in the interest of diversity, though, i think we should have more days set aside for the celebration of sex and chocolate, in all their many forms. we can have a white chocolate/masturbation day, and a dove chocolate ganache/lesbian cunnilingus day, a chocolate body paint/earn your red wings day, an eat chocolate fudge sundaes and get over your homophobia day, etc. etc. let's celebrate all forms of chocolate and sex!

    see here's the thing

    You're ALL right.

First off every holiday is a 'Day' first. I mean seriously, I really don't understand why people look down on it or what not. Sure it's got a lot of propaganda tied to it, but so does every other holiday that is mainstream.

The following is not for pity.

I long forgot what it was like to have any days really focus on my, but I like to make people who deserve it feel happy. Even if it's just for a moment. It's ok to think about someone, or a member of the opposite sex, and toss em a smile for no reason and no strings attached.

People like to be remembered, and these holidays hurt when people feel they aren't being remembered rightly (not everyone but most). And I like to remember the ones who deserve to be remembered.

The last time I received a valentines was in 11th grade. Seriously. Not looking for pity. But I just kinda look forward to this and similar holidays (christmas is a blast let me tell you. Family Tech support...ALL....DAY....)because, as egotistical as it sounds, I like to make other's days a little better. Just ask Delia, My Valentine. Heheh it makes it worth while.

Then this year came, and I got an awesome fucking valentines gift from an unexpected source. It was awesome, and I remembered what it was like to be treated well.

Fuck the Hallmarkness, Fuck the corporate propoganda, but good feelings still kick ass.
People are not ruled by their memories.

I know that if I am in a relationship with someone that VD has me critique the relationship a little bit that day. I don't see that as a bad thing as it can help me 'wake up and smell the coffee' in re: the relationship I having with someone.

VD is just another day however I do appreciate its sentiments regardless of the commercialisaiton and what-not. I'm not asking for much just a little something.

Chocolate supposedly stimulates endorphins--'feel good' drugs naturally produced in our bodies, say when we're in love, etc.

I'm a bit jaded, but nothing wrong with that--or making someone you normally treat well feel even more special once in a while.

Hell, even going to Walmart with someone can be romantic, if you do it right, but I wouldn't blow off VD just because I might ordinarily give them flowers if they like them.

But when everyone runs around feeling like they have to do something, it's kind of lame. And you can't deny the bombardment of the various media just before it, though it thankfully doesn't approach the joke Christmas has become.
