    Sad Anti Depressant Help

Well, I hate to be finally resorting to this, but my life is a living hell right now. I'm usually a really strong, positively thinking person but once again I'm in the midst of a depression and can't seem to get out of it.

Instead of boring you guys with the details I'll get right to the point... Is there any anti-depressants that actually promote weight loss? I've been on Zoloft and Prozac before and they made me gain weight like mad and made me not able to lose it no matter what I did. This is a REALLY big fear of mine! I think I'd be even more depressed if I gained weight. I'm really desperate though, I can't go on feeling this misserable! I'm making both my own and my boyfriend's life a living hell!

I'm going to the clinic tomorrow so please any advice would be great. I googled it but it only seems to mention weight gain and all the anti-depressants that cause it.

I had this terrific doctor who, when I told him I danced, took weight gain into consideration when prescribing antidepressants to me. I have taken Celexa and Lexapro, neither of which made a difference in my weight.

However, bear in mind that everyone reacts differently to medications and you might need to experiment to find which one works best for you. Also, go to therapy, because medication is just one part of feeling better.

Different people have different side effects from medication. I was on Zoloft and lost way too much weight it was scary, so my doctor switched me to Lexapro and I've gained some of the weight back. Talk to your doctor and tell him your concerns so that you can find a medication that is right for you.

Wellbutrin will cause weight loss but it didn't work for me. I lost weight but my anxiety increased. I started Effexor and it works well. It doesn't cause weight gain for me.

i've been on every single one of them. and gained weight on every single one of them. ((hence my username.)) i'm not exaggerating, either.

on the other hand, the doctors (and i have an entourage) tell me that for most people, there's at least one drug they can take without getting horrible side effects. my body just doesn't seem to tolerate them well.

    Wow,

after reading everyones posts, i guess it depends on the individual.

I lost 10lbs when i went on Celexa, and it stayed off. I think now it was more my willingness to get up out of bed than the medication.

I guess you just have to try things to see what works for you.

Good luck sweetie, I know what a big black hole is like to get out of.

    Thanks guys!

As far as I've read Wellbutrin is good for weight loss. I just moved acouple months ago so I don't have a personal doctor here yet, so hopfully the process of getting one wont take too long.

If I gain wieght on these meds I'm seriously gonna flip out though! I've worked hard enough to lose weight to put it back on and I've gained 5lbs already!

I was on Efexor, didn't lose weight but I felt really scattered and zoned out all the time, and always had this slight feeling of nausea in my throat and stomach. It definitely worked as an anti-depressant, but for me had too many yucky side effects to take it long term.

That's the only one I've taken tho.

Yes, Wellbutrin. That's the only anti deppresant that is associated with weight loss.

You can also try St. John's Wart (from a health store). It is good for depression and doesn't cause weight gain. You can get it without a script - which is nice. I don't think it's as strong as Zoloft though. I got off Zoloft 6 months ago and have lost 30 pounds. I'm controlling my depression with better eating habits and exercise and that's after being on Zoloft for about 7 years. It amazes me... and I'm thrilled.

if you take st. john's wort make absolutely sure that you inform all of your doctors, as it interacts negatively with many medications. also, be sure you use the supplement made by a reputable brand. you might also try 400 IU daily of vitamin E plus enteric coated capsules of fish oil.

and if you've already gained weight, tell your doctor now. on some of them i literally gained 20 lbs in a month. so if you have the unlucky genes like i do, you really don't have time to waste, and some of these meds have to be tapered off. also remember that many antidepressants have a tendency to increase suicidality. make sure someone who cares about you knows you're on the meds and is watching out for you. people have been known to have no thoughts of harming themselves whatsoever, then end up in psych wards with lacerations all over their bodies after they start these meds. report any such thoughts to your doctor- it might be the medication, not you, talking.

I used to take prozac and I gained a lot of weight, but I also was eating a lot and stopped running. The prozac sort of made me happy just to do nothing, which isn't exactly good for keeping weight down. I think I tried Effexor and it made me feel like I was having a heart attack. I think it was Effexor but it's been years since I tried it. There was another one I tried that I took one pill and it put me to sleep so deep I couldn't hardly wake up after 12 hours and was like a zombie even then. Now I'm taking 5-htp and I'm not sure if it's helping my mood but I think it's supposed to not make you gain weight and you can buy it at the vitamin store.

I've taken Prozac for the past 3 months and haven't gained any weight... Then again, I'm 18 so my metabolism isn't completely settled and I take Adderall occasionally :/ If that's you in your avatar, I personally think you look great.

I took Wellbutrin for 3 years and really recommend it. Other antidepressents made me feel weird, but I had no side effects with Wellbutrin. I was a little thinner back then too!

Something no one has mentioned yet is Zyprexa. I was preseribed this two years ago for depression and it worked ok. Turns out I'm BIpolar so it didnt work like it should have , but I didnt experience horrid weight gain from it. The only thing I hated about it its you cant just stop taking it, if you do you get really dizzy and emotional.....not fun.

Abilify is another one I was on to help with depression. This one was used in combination with some other meds to help with the bipolar so not sure if its used just for depression.

    Anyway just my about medications.

zyprexa was one of the worst ones for me, weight gain wise. i tried abilify once, but i developed an allergic reaction. no weight gain, but then again, i was only on it for a week before they pulled me off.

For me, Paxil worked okay(but was HELL to come off).

Lexapro didn't work at all and was scary...
I remember sitting in class, literally my eyelids were twitching; found out later they made me hyperkinetic (sp?) which is like when you try to crawl out of your skin.

I'd do some more investigation of St. Johns Wort. As has been said, make SURE the pharmaceutical-type antidepressants are COMPLETELY out of your system before going on it, otherwise you can have seizures and death. I have been on it for months now and it is very helpful, no weight gain or other adverse side effects, though its not as effective as the harder stuff. Interestingly, St. Johns Wort is very popular in Europe for treating depression. Good luck~

I've been on Wellbutrin for the past three months... other than a generally improved outlook on life and a more well-organized and coherent day-to-day plan, I've also lost a lot of fat. I haven't lost weight (gained muscle mass) but in the past two months I noticed a sudden improvement in my muscle tone that I'm really happy with. I assume that it's a combination of the wellbutrin and dancing. Yay!
