i have heard pilates is an amazing workout for abs. for the girls that do pilates at a studio, how often do you go every week? i would love to go to a pilates studio.. it is expensive but i know it'll be worth it.. how long did it take to see results?

I do pilates 2 times a week. Lemme tell you---this stuff works! It has made my abs like steel, improved my posture, and now all the little muscles in my back ripple when I flex. Great for the ass and thighs, too.
Took me about 2 months to see the results. You think you aren't working hard, but because the excercises really isolate the muscle groups, it doesn't take as many reps to start seeing results. You will also feel achy the first few times you do it, because you are working the muscles very deeply.
I've used the machines, but prefer the matwork. You can't really cheat with matwork. It isn't cheap---where I live, a 10 class card is about 117$. Using the machines with a trainer is about 50$ a session.
I do pilates on a machine...well, haven't for a couple weeksBut when I did it more regularly I noticed a big difference in my posture and it got me in better shape. I've been sick like forever so I barely can go to the gym or do anything. I don't know as far as learning moves online though. I learned at a studio and bought my own machine.

I would reccomend perhaps borrowing a few pilates tapes from your local library, renting them from a video store or buying them just so you can get an idea of what pilates entails. Look around for studios that offer a free or cheap intro classes. Some places will even offer a cheap first week card when you can take unlimited classes (just make sure its a week when you have some time on your hands!) That way, you can see if you like it before you make any major monetary commitments. I personally love pilates, I just do tapes at home but it kicks my ass and I love it. It doesn't hurt or overexert you but it does work. I'm off to do some right now, actually

i love my pilates dvd....order it from PBS....The Heart of Pilates![]()

I guess I'll try to take some classes.
I do Windsor Pilates. I know it's a bit old but it still works great. I have been doing at least twice weekly for three years and I have seen very noticeable results. Very strong abdominal muscles, a lot less back pain, more flexibility and better posture.
Pilates makes me bored.![]()
I prefer bellydance, high-intensity aerobics, martial arts, or sports.
But pilates DOES make your abs amazing!

I love Ellen Barrett, she's an awesome instructor. She does Crunch fitness videos, my favourite is pick-your-spot, which is fab when you're feeling lazy, because the workouts are 10 minutes each.

that's what I noticed! I don't hunch as much when I do pilates regularly and my back doesn't bother me like it usually does. I hate a great teacher who ended up opening a studio in CA so if anyone in CA wants to do pilates pm me. she is great!Very strong abdominal muscles, a lot less back pain, more flexibility and better posture.
i just recently bought Turbo Jam and love it...great music... check it out!http://beachbody.com/jump.jsp?itemID...RY&path=1,2,21

I want to give pilates a try. I LOVE yoga and lots of people have said I would really enjoy pilates.
I've been doing/involved in Pilates for about 6 (?) years now. I love, love, love, love, love it. The Book, "Pilates Body" is the best book for beginners on Pilates.
Personally, I think if you are just beginning, you should take lessons at a qualified studio (that's different that going to the local gym). Pilates is very 'form specific' and in order to reap the full benefits of Pilates, you need to have good form. You just don't get that instruction at the local gym. When I first started Pilates, I took lessons at a certified studio for 6 months (2 x's a week) and then supplemented with a video the other 5 days (I did it 7 days a week). Then, as I became better and stronger, I dropped my lessons to once a week, once bi-weekly, once a month, and then phased out the lessons (they ARE expensive). But, once you really have the form down, you're good to go on your own.
Good luck! And, Enjoy!!

She's right. Nothing can replace professional instruction when you are first starting out. I bought Windsor Pilates for my mom because it was highly recommended. The DVDs have little about form. There is no point of doing Pilates with out form! Mari Windsor said zip about Pilates stance and how to position your thighs, legs and feet. It was awful!
Gaiam's Beginners Mat Workout with Ana Caban is decent introductory DVD. It does not replace a certified instructor though.

I saw an informercial about a Pilates machine. It had a padded platform, a bar w/those pulley thingies, etc. I think it was super Pilates.com, not sure. If I have to go get expen$ive lessons, that leaves me out...![]()

You do not need that big machine when first starting out. In the book, The Pilates Body, Siler explains that "the matwork is the original movement system that Joseph Pilates created and is just as effective as the work done on the machines."Originally Posted by whirlerz
If you are interested in Pilates, please go to the library check out The Pilates Body, Gaiam's Beginners Mat Workout DVD, and (if they have it) Classical Pilates Technique DVD. Classical Pilates Technique is not a workout. It shows you how to perform the moves correctly if you do not have access to an instructor.
