    Default School group solutions?

So I am one of 3 people in my science class group. Both are very new to science and scientific methods etc.
One guy is an older guy (about 40) and once in a conversation told me I was pretty. Then I start to wonder where this might be going in the future. He is a hard worker though.
The other guy who is 20 emails me Monday night before the exam is due on Tuesday and asks if we can do a little studying to find answers for the exam. Um its freakin 10pm at night and NOW you want to work?! So this leads me to thinks he's a slacker.
I have feeling they might think Im going to do most of the work or be the brains of the group. I dont want to be mooched off of for school. We made groups on the 1st day of class and didnt get a chance to get to know anyone yet.

Any suggestions of what to tell them?

I think the older guy is using the study group to try to eventually "hook up" with you and the young guy is using the group as a mooch.I would tell them how you feel, upfront and point blank.

Are you all graded as a group? If not, I would let them fall on thier faces. I have done it before. I have gone so far as to let my slacker lab partner turn in his or her wrong results, do the lab over in my spare time, and then turn in my right results. If questioned, I will say that I felt uncomfortable with the results of the original experiment and was unable to reach mylab partner, so I jsut went ahead and did it over myself.

In the "graded as a group" situation, the 3 of us who were really working together went to the teacher and explained what was happening. Then he noticed that the slacker chick was not even working in our group, but hanging around with her friends in another group. We did our work and stopped putting her name on the paper. We all got A's for the semeser. I don't know what happened to slacker chick.

Group projects really suck for all the reasons you outlined. Yes, you will probably do all the work or perhaps just the bulk of it. One angle you can work here is the role of The Delegator--you decide what the other two are going to do on the project, and note that in your project follow-up. This is important if individual contributions aren't considered by the teacher.

    right

If you look carefully at the teachers seminars reasoning for group based projects, it looks suspiciously like making kids fall into the rolls of leader/laborer and just laborers, like we're preparing them for management/clerk relationships...it's weird. But I digress.
