    Smiley post great/awful pet products

some things my cats really love: the bada-beam laser toy and the thing in a bag toy. the bada-beam toy is like a laser pointer, but it moves itself around in a circle, stopping randomly, and shuts off automatically after 10 minutes or so. the thing in a bag toy is the weirdest thing- it's like a paper lunch bag, but made from some sort of indestructible space age material, and it has a little robot inside that jiggles around to make the bag shake and crinkle. i didn't believe the claw/teeth-proof thing at first but that stuff is like kevlar. the cats really can't kill it. it also shuts off automatically after 10 mins or so. both you can order online from petco.com or petsmart.com. also, they love the catsitter DVD- it plays a constant loop program of wild birds chirping around, but it has other options- a graphic of a bug randomly flitting across the screen, some beach scenes, a short movie of cats playing with cat toys, lots of cute stuff. get it on ebay.

the worst pet product i have ever encountered in fresh step cat litter- both times i've gotten it, the perfume smell has been so powerful that i couldn't go back in the room for an hour after emptying it into the catbox. the cats didn't seem to mind it at all, but it made me sick.

for my bf's mum's schizophrenic dogs, bach's rescue remedy herbal tincture works wonders. four drops and even poor elwood, who has the saddest life story you've never heard and long lasting emotional problems because of it, can calm down. you can get that one at health food stores or drugstore.com.

what are your favourite pet products? also post anything that's horrible and we should be warned away from!

My Westie was allergic to that food. I switched them to Science Diet and that works for them.

That red rubber Kong toy is awesome for dogs...especially dogs that destroy a toy in minutes.

My Chihuahua LOVES these little fleece bones. Small enough for a Chihuahua mouth. She'll squeak that for a good hour till she tires out.

Our cats love this little fishing pole toy that comes with little fake fish you hook on. We'll toss out the line and reel in the fish and the cats go insane.

Socks! I know that sounds weird, but my cat will go through laundry baskets looking for socks. My son leaves his socks balled up in his shoes, and she takes them out of there too! She wont play with cat toys, just socks!

As for food, the brand we suggest to all our greyhound adopters is Nutro Max. It has glucosamine and chondroitin in it which is great for working breeds as it helps prevent arthritis. In greyhounds this is common as they get older from all the racing in their youth so it's a good thing to have automatically in their food. Also, it's a really high quality brand of food that doesn't have all the fillers that Science Diet and other popular brands have.

As for bad, there is a common issue with rawhides that most dog owners are not aware of. While this doesn't effect most breeds, some breeds like shepherds and greyhounds have somewhat weak livers and don't filter out impurities as well as other breeds do. The vast majority of rawhides on the market contain, among other things, arsenic, which is used as a preservative. Yes, you heard right...a highly toxic poison. While most breeds are able to filter this out through their liver, some breeds cannot and having a few rawhides over a few days can actually kill your dog. The key to rawhides is that the only bad rawhides, the ones with arsenic, are the ones that are made outside the United States. In the U.S., this is not allowed, but it is legal to import rawhides that do have it. So, the next time you buy rawhides, look at the label and see where it's made. If it is made in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, or other countries outside the U.S., you can pretty much bet it has aresenic in it. Be sure to read the label carefully and see if it is, in fact, made in the United States. There are many popular American companies that have them made outside the U.S. so be sure to double check this when you buy your next bag.

Goji juice and I am NOT posting this because I sell the stuff. I'm deadly serious. It works wonders for my cats however I have to give it to them via an eye dropper. I give this to the cats once a month or whenever their 'poop' is not healthy and it fixes them right up.

What I found funny is how my flatmate's cat who is greedy enough... well.. he eats Schmackos (http://www.schmackos.com.au/). Something that is marketed for dogs! He loved them when I gave them to him!

I'll also second the Bach Flower Remedies. Great stuff! Swear by it as well.

Then there is VIP ... both the cat mince ( http://www.vippetfoods.com.au/catfoo...for+Catz/800g/ ) and the dry food ( http://www.vippetfoods.com.au/catfoo...A+Turkey/800g/) esp. (once again) my flatmate's cat who we both think should be the poster cat for this company as he absolutely : both of these products.

That's the only kind of toy that we can have in my house because my Jack Russell will ruin any other toy....even ones that claim they are tough and have pictures of JRTs on them.

It's so sad that my Pomeranian can't play with normal dog toys....just industrial strength stuff.

Also, the Kong Stuff'n is a blessing.

hell yeah!!!!! I put chunky peanut butter in mine
and BENEFUL rocks! I tried it out and since you have to wean the dogs off thier other food first I mixzed them together. When I came home they had eaten all the Beneful, but left the Pedigree bits in there, wow, right?
I also love pig's ears for my girls, not the strips, but the whole ones.
I also love the knuckles with grissle, they are messy and smell like vitamin E, but they keep the dogs busy for hours.
HATE the "just like pig's ears", they are not stronger and my dogs hatre them

Amd for those of you whose dogs tear up toys, try out Material Dog, Dr. Noy's Pet Toys.
They don't have stuffing, but have squeakers that can be removed due to velcro on the side of the toy. Plus, they come with replacement squeakers and in tons of different animal shapes, love them!

I was never a big fan of the littermaid, it was still just as much work, lol...

I REALLY REALLY like the tidycats for small spaces... its got a citrus-y scent, and its really good litter... its a slightly bit more expensive, and i usually dont like tidy cats, but its worth it...

and the best thing i ever did litter box wise, was to get rid of the self cleaning one and get a BIG underbed storage bin... my 21 pound cat has enough room to get in, and the little one can kick all she wants, lol

Awesome litter box idea, honey. Another good one is to get someof those chap welcome mats at the dollar store and put them under and around the box. then the kitties have to wipe thier feet as they get out. No mreo litter tracking around the house!

Whoever suggested the Cat Attract litter, that stuff rocks. I had the new kitten trained in about 2 days, and the big kitties have stopped having "accidents" (read, moments of supreme laziness) all together.

Trader Joes also sells a sillica or silicone clumping litter that is white and absorbs smells like nobody's business. I have heard that many clumping litters make dust that is bad for the cats' lungs, but this kind is dust-free.

Once we move, I am going to get a big-ass box like Honey suggested and mix the sillica litter and the cat-attract (sillica costs about half as much) and put one on each level of the house. Add some baking soda, and viola! no more stinky cat smells or messy accidents.

As for raw hides, I never knew there was a problem with them. The dog I had growing up was half german shepard, but she must have inherited a strong liver from her collie side. She woudl devour a box of rawhides a week. She lived to 16 years old and always had great teeth. The raw hides wre among her favoirte things in life and gave her a llot of pleasure. As long as there are the american made ones, I would highly recommend them.

Little plastic fishing pole, the "lure" is a mouse toy. All my cats go bonkers for it. And this fuzzy spider with ribbon legs with bells on the ends. my kittty will tear and growl at it like a dog, its adorable And those super cheap little rubber bouncy balls . But jinx, he'll play with anything. I think he's the reason so many of my thongs have disapeared. I've seen him go through my laundry just to play with them.

Called the Greening, it is so tempting for dogs that they bite off great chunks of it. Those swallowed chunks don't get digested fast enough and so it blocks their guts. A number of dogs have died from it already

I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Okay, so this isn't a product that you can buy, but it is my favorite.

We have two cats. When we lived in a little apartment, we had no conveinient place to put the box, so my husband bought some plywood, carpet remnents and a small pet door, and created a litterbox keeper that doubles as and end table! He hinged the front of the box so that we simply swing open the door (like opening the trunk of your car) to remove the box for cleaning.

It took some training to get the cats to use the thing (they perfer to be let outside anyway), but they eventually got the hang of it. Now every cat owner who see it and realizes what it is, wants one.

It is also nice when small children visit. The opening is too small for even an 18 month old to get into (and 18 mo olds are into EVERYTHING!).

Does anyone know if the "Cat Attract litter" that colleen spoke about is available in Australia ? I am willing to pay P&H to buy a bag of this stuff as I am just plain sick n tired of one of the cats in this household having lapses of laziness as far as using the kitty litter goes (then again I swear he does to spite us).

We changed from clay to crystals and the smell has decreased. The only smell we have to worry about in my household is when the male cat goes does a 'dump' in the kitty litter. Spray air freshener STAT!

Also, great idea about the mat colleen... I might just go out and buy a few cheapos locally as the cats take some of the crystals with them plus they will be easy to replace if someone decides to pee on it.

The only downside to having 'senior' cats (one is 9 in August and mine is 13 years old) is that it is too late to train them to use the human toilet... that is MY kind of toilet training for a cat. In the end easier and less expensive. Oh yeh not to mention almost impossible to do so with the design of the toilet in our place.

Forgot to mention one toy that I bought.. it is a rod with some feathers attached at the end of some elastic. I could've made it "at home" however I'm not a craft type of person so I bought it for $10 at a pet store. First the male cat loved it... now he hardly plays with it at all and my cat goes bonkers of it! It's so funny as we have a name for when we use the toy to play with my cat .... "Fishing for Nibbler" (Nibbler is one of the numerous nicknames my cat, Bibs, has acquired due to the fact she nibbles at her food).
