Default The Cure for Brassy Blonde Hair?

I've gone back to blonde and am having trouble getting a few brassy areas as blonde as I'd like. Short of going back to the haidresser, anyone know of a great shampoo/conditioner that brightens blonde hair and gets rid of brassiness? I used to use a conditioner called Revivor and it was GREAT however I am unable to find it now.

Go to the salon and tell them you need a purple shampoo to cut brass.

You can also go to Sally Beauty Supply and get a product called "Red-Gold Remover." It's a tiny little tube of purple liquid. Squeeze it into your shampoo bottle and mix it well. It'll turn your shampoo bright purple, but it will cut that brass. What you have are red/gold tones, which need purple or blue to negate them.

And next time, tell the hairdresser you need an ash blonde, not gold.

Yakhefah, I tried looking online for the "Red-Gold Remover" that you mentioned, but I don't seem to be able to find it. I would really like to try that - perhaps you know the online store where it can be bought?
    thanks dear

clairol shimmerlights shampoo and condish stink but work (sally's). have to be left on hair for a few min. fekkai has a good violet 'poo as well. i usually get a toner done at my stylist's, as i'm growing out some old highlights and am very prone to brassiness and need industiral strength. once a month is good. also if you have hard water in your shower, you may want to get a filter.

I think we do have hard water. How much would a filter be? We are renting so I don't want to put in a huge investment but...

i think you can get it for $20+ at home depot. not sure tho. sephora has one for $90 by jonathan (or maybe it's water softener? just look at the website, i'm lazy, lol). now i wonder whether filter and softener is the same thing... sorry, am really fuzzy brained today; got no sleep, meh...

I've only seen it at Sally Beauty Supply, but I think you can buy stuff from their website. I used to mix it with the dye when I colored my own hair. It comes in these tiny packets that you have to snip open with scissors, and costs 99 cents. One tiny packet will treat a whole bottle of shampoo.

It's called The Blue Shampoo ... from any salon I forget who makes it though?

I bought the Red-Gold stuff but I bought the teeny bottle instead of the little packet. I could not find how much I should mix into my shampoo though, so I put about 20 drops into a 32 oz on shampoo...hope that's not too much!
I wonder what's the worst that could happen..

artec white violet shampoo or redken platinum ice shampoo might help. be careful with a blue shampoo, you could end up with gray/greenish places where your hair is already very light.

Get a light brown. It has a purple base. Put it on for about three minues and wash out. It wont color your hair but the purple will get rid of the brassiness and it will 'lock in' your blond color.

ADD: This would be called a 'toner'.... in case anyone was wondering what exactly a 'toner' is... just a regular color left on long enough for the base color to penetrate but not the actual color...

Yeah you probably just need a toner. Do not do this at home alone. you need to go back to the salon. It will turn your hair grey if you don't go have this done professionally. I would also not recommend you put an ash color on your hair. If you have bleached it, it is very poreous and will soak up any color you put on your hair (including the purple shampoo so be careful) and it will also give you a more smokey/grey haircolor.

I think you should go with a more gentle purple shampoo like the one from aveda. It has natural plant derrivitives instead of chemical pigments and your hair is less ikely to retain the purple color from the aveda.

You really should call your colorist and let them deal with it. Blonde hair is very tricky.

A toner is not exacly like a regular color, actually. It is a different chemical process and is usually a lift and deposit rater than just deposit like most haircolor.

That's why you do not want to apply a toner at home. Your hair could break off at the scalp if you're not careful.

the toner itself doesn't lift. it is to be used after lightening to a pale shade (with bleach) to neutralize warmth (orange/yellow/gold/reddish)

also, "most" haircolor isn't deposit only....permanent haircolor lifts and deposits, and demi i believe lifts slightly but without a straight peroxide developer, it usually calls for a special developer. and semi-permanant is deposit only...i think i'm getting this right lol.

i know we have a few cosmo girls on SW, do any of you know of any good websites/ message boards for people in the industry?

Not all permanent hair color lifts and deposits. How would black haircolor lift anything?

Actually, toners do lift color. That's how they work. They open the cuticle to neutralize the brassy tones. They lift. That's what peroxide does. Unless you are using a semi-permanent toner (which defeats the purpose of using one at all) it will call for a peroxide developer.

opening the cuticle doesn't neutralize anything. the peroxide lifts yes, but the purpose of a toner is to do just that, to tone. it deposits color onto another color to neutralize it (blue neutralizes orange, violet neutralizes yellow) and in all actuality it's not really neutralizing, just covering up the unwanted tones.
i get what you are saying, yes most toners call for a 20 volume developer but they are not used to lighten or lift the haircolor, they are only left on about 5 minutes after lightening to a certain level to TONE it (add tones) not trying to argue, i am by no means trying to say i'm the authority on the matter and maybe you have more experience than me, but i do know that lifting color is not "how toner works". perhaps you mean a high-lift permanant color?
a black permanent color is still mixed with a 20 volume is it not? so therefore if you are saying a toner "lifts" because it's mixed with 20 vol, why would you say the same doesn't apply to a black color?
hehehe i can always go dig up my cosmetology book and see exactly what it says.....

If your going to talk about toners.
After I lighten my hair my roots have a more orangie, yellow color so thats when i have to use a toner.

I use Color Charm "White Lady" but remember you still have to mix toners with 30 or 40 volume peroxide.

I always pick a color or toner with a blue or purple base. If I dont I get a more ashy color and can sometimes look green. UUUGH

Just run to target and get the Sheer Blonde line by John Freida. The bottles are both about $5 each but I love it! I even went to using the brunette line when I dyed my hair darker.

natasha i love white lady!!! after a double or triple bleach process with 40 vol i only need to use 20 (at most, sometimes i make a 15 concotion) with the toner and it stays until the next time i do my roots and the residual bleach strips it out. much gentler on my hair.

im actually TRYING to make my platinum hair go a little silvery-gray (hella old lady!). color charm (by Wella right?) makes a similar "Silver Lady" shade that is more of a blue violet base than a violet base. im just afraid it might be too blue (or, yikes, green). i tried it on a few strands of hair last time i toned and i didnt see a huge difference so i think im going all out next time.

ditto on the stinky (like old dandruff shampoo) shimmerlights. i use it anyway. all the product and perfume i use anyway covers up the light scent afterwards.

i love my sally's discount card.
