Ok I didn't want this thread to turn into a rock verses rap arguement,,,,I'm one of the biggest metalheads around and I LOVE gangsta rap. I could care less about lyrical content, it's about energy.
As far as disturbing lyrics...what was disturbing about those songs?
You want violent grotesque lyrics from rock? So be it.....

You want lyrical content that compares to 50cent? I can do that too.

    Not a problem.
The point here is EVERY genre of music has artists who are going to sing about objectionable material, when the artist draws upon real life for his/her inspiration it happens more often
If, for instance, I had any musical talent my music would be about alcoholism, drug abuse, child abuse etc because that's what I knew as a younger person.
I can't sing or write about flowers and sunshine because they didn't exist in my world, and if I tried it would come across as fake.
Like it or not rap and metal are here to stay, and are important pieces to the musical puzzle of life.

I hear ya. You're talking to a very loyal follower of rap/hip hop since back in the day. I've seen it change. Some good some bad. I'm also the same guy that grew up in SoCal listening to "The devil came down to Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band every fucking morning on the way to high school. (and I do mean every day like clockwork...you would think that radio station only had one piece of vinyl)

Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Scorpions, Journey, AC DC, etc etc... I listened to all that shit and actually came to like some of it. I guess that's why I don't understand the hatred for one genre. I can listen to it all.

I hear ya, I grew up listenin to my uncles classic rock, then discovered heavy metal and punk. The neighborhood I grew up in was predominantly black/peurto rican so I listened to rap, hip-hop, r&b with the boys and went home and jammed my shit. I learned to appreciate all forms of music(except country) and it helped me later on when I wanted to become a dj. I was fortunate enough to catch Run D.M.C in the beginning(and watch them get booed off the stage), I remember Whodini and their cover of back in black and who can forget Afrika Bambaataa, or P-Funk?There was no hate involved musically...it was music pure and simple

I'm with you!! Portland is kind of goth central, so most clubs play rock and mellow alternative and stuff like that. Lots of country, too -- snore! Don't get me wrong, I love rock music, but I don't like dancing to it that much. Hip hop makes me WANT to dance. I also love the early 90's slow jam stuff, like Keith Sweat, Changing Faces, H-Town, etc. I just auditioned at a club last week that pretty much refused to play any of this, for fear of turning off the customers. I don't even know WHAT I ended up dancing to, but it was so dull I about fell asleep.

JMO- I think you should dance to music that you think pleases the crowd but priority in picking music to me is something that I like that makes me feel comfortable on stage. Yeah, I like my ghetto music and the black guys will usually tip me with money showers when I play rap. But I like Chevelle and perfect circle, too. I will do 80's early in the night.
