    Default Black Like Me...

Have any of you read this bestselling book, "Black Like Me" by author John Howard Griffin? Basically the book is about what is it like to be black, in the deep south. John Griffin changed his race as a white male to get into blackface to "discover" by personal experience the black side of American life.

Ok, enough about the history lesson. There is a new show that will be in the works on FX. Families will be switching ethnic identities to see how green the grass on the other side is.

    I think it's rather interesting..check it out.

I read that book, found it interesting. However, this is not the 60s.

My grass is the same color as everybody else's.

I've had more problems with blacks than whites or any other ethnicity.

If there is one horse that has been beaten to beyond death, it's the "black experience" one. I think it's time blacks step off the soapbox and let the vietnamese or somebody else have a turn.

How about no one gets on the soapbox. If people are always pointing out how different black, jewish, asian, hispanic, etc are, how the fuck is everyone supposed to be treated the same?

Well since sterotypes will always exist (saldly there will always bit a bit racism in America) then someone of some race will have to play the race card. It wont end for a looong time in this country and it hasnt stopped with just blacks.

CK- They made me read that book in 8th grade. I wasnt interested at the time but now Im older and experience like that seems real.

Just because stereotypes exsist doesn't mean they should be enforced.

I mean hell, look at my heritage:
    French - Cowards
    Polish - Stupid
    Irish - Drunks
    Native American - Drunken savage
    Norwegian
    Czech

I couldn't think of any for the last two but my point is the stereotypes associated with my genetic pool used to be a big deal. They aren't nearly the same any more.

The longer people point out difference the longer people will notice them.
I mean shit, when I was a kid we had a family friend who I knew as Uncle Mike. It never occured he wasn't really my uncle until some other kid pointed out he was black. Up until that point I hadn't really thought about it one way or another because no one had ever pointed it out before.

Well, as a Finlander lemme fill in your blanks:

Norwegian/Finland - Drunken Pillager of London, Pirate
Czech - Lazy assbackwards "There's paved streets?" standing in the mud beside the carriage.

    Scandinavians are some rowdy crowd.

Man, I don't know if I should answer these anymore!

But Chinese are smart and good at laundry/small business - always on the hustle. Chinese women are known for badgering their men. "Why you sit! You have family! Earn money! Lazy man!"

I read that book and actually loved it. It's probably my favorite of all time. I saw the write up about that show. I'm interested, but it seems to me that would be very labor intensive (the make-up process).

i've never read the book, but it sounds like an interesting read, next time I go to the bookstore, I'll have to buy it!

The show looks interesting, but i have doubts. I just know that someone, or everyone, is going to be portrayed as an idiot, racist, a rude bitch, its always how reality shows work out, i will probably watch a couple of episodes, it should be interesting to see if they are treated differently by people of the same race as they were before all the makeup!

Thanks OTB! Yeah, I have to agree with you there Lizzy. Most (un) reality tv shows, while they are reality to some extent, still like to portray people in a certain light. They have their little concotions. It's like on most Real World casts there is always the jock, the intellectual/outcast, the slut, the good girl, and the drunk. People tend to act alike often, but they only focus on those actions from one person. I can't wait to see how people are "portrayed" on "Black and White" on FX.

Let's face it there is very little realism in reality TV. I can't watch the stuff personally, then again I tend to favor the History Channel over regular programming lol. I'm such a dork.

Yep, I read it -- was really very thought-provoking. Speaking of which, have you heard of this new book? Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent. She goes undercover as a guy, joins a bowling league, visits some very nasty strip clubs, spends a month in a monastery, and other fascinating stuff.

Never read Black Like Me. I'll have to pick it up this week. Saw a commercial about the FX show. When does it start? It looks interesting.

Saw an interview with her on Good Morning America about a month ago. It was a year, btw, that she spent as a man. She dated girls and stuff too, to see what it's like, as a guy, to have to pick up women. I've gotta go get that too.
