Default Dilemma: To Strip or Not to Strip ?

So here I was, all happy about having my summer figured out. I was planning on getting a day job assembling stuff and working nights dancing. (I REALLY need to save for school!).
I know if I want to dance, it would be best if my family NEVER finds out about it. Since I'm 18, I know that would be difficult, but possibly workable. But then it hit me the other day: dancers actually have to file taxes (yes, I know I was naive in thinking they don't). My parents do my all taxes and financial aid stuff. And I know my mom would never approve of me dancing. (I had lightly mentioned I was thinking of doing life modeling at school here, because it pays $9.50/hr, and she was like, "Don't you even entertain the idea!").
I don't know what to do. I was really looking forward to a summer job dancing because it seems like a good way to quickly save up money for school. Technically, it is my body and I can strip if I want to; then again, I don't want to scare or hurt my parents by bringing up something like this.

Has anyone else dealt with a situation like this?

There isn't that much you can do to prevent someone who you don't want to know from finding out.

I don't mean to be discouraging, but if you want NO ONE to know, that could be a problem. It's not entirely possible to control.

I had a similar problem when I first started. I started last year when I was 19 and still living at home and a college student. I didn't want my parents to find out. I still had my other job working in a video store, and was stripping on my nights off from the video store for some extra money. Well one night my parents wanted to know what I was doing because they wanted me to do something with them that night, and I told them I had to work (which was true- I had to dance that night.) Well they ended up needing to get ahold of me for something, so they called the video store to try to get ahold of me (because I had told them that I would be working). Well to make a long story short, I ended up having to tell them about my 2nd job. They weren't happy about it, but I'm an adult and paying for school myself, so they accept it.

Just remember- you are an adult and are entitled to make your own decisions. Even if they are paying for your school and decide to cut you off, there is financial aid that you can get (that's how I'm paying for school- loans and grants, and some of my own money). It is hard to hide these things from parents. Even if you don't tell them, it is always possible that someone that your parents know could show up in the club while you're working (it's happened to me) and end up telling them. It's best to be honest about it.
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

do your own taxes! Just say "mum, dad, I think I need to start taking responsibility for my tax stuff - let me try to do it on my own this time so I can learn for the future."
It's really not that hard - I do it online. Or get an accountant. Easy!

If you're 18, they really don't need to be doing your taxes still anyway. I've been doing my own since I was 16.

Do your own taxes, and do your own financial aid. The only info of your parents you will need is their tax info. It's basic common sense. I've been doing my own taxes (since I was 14yrs) and doing my own financial aid sine I was 18yrs old. It can be done.

Doing your own taxes is an easy fix. But do you still live at home? If you do it sounds like a bad idea to hide such a big secret. I mean all of the gear you have to store and wash and the hours and smelling like a bar all the time. I couldn't do it.
But if you want to see if you like it or not and keep the financial situation the same, I believe there is an amount of money you could take in before having to claim it on taxes. Is that taboo here? I know it's a tricky area - but I mean like a grand or something.

I think the cutoff is $7,000. Don't take my word on this, because I could be wrong, but I think that if you make less than that you either don't have to file, or you won't have to actually send money in if you do file.

Thanks for all the advice. It really is helpful to be able to talk to you all about things like this!
I still live at home, and during the summer, my family usually lives up north at our summer cottage, with some of us (I have 4 brothers) at any time being there or at our normal home near Milwaukee-- people are always going back and forth. But during the summer at home there wouldn't be a full house of people, so it would be slightly easier to hide my job. But I do realize that with 7 people in my family, it would be difficult to completely hide something like this (especially with snoopy brothers).
As far as doing my own taxes...I think my mom would be really suspicious, and she'd probably want to help me with them anyway.
I think my only choices would be: either not strip, or tell my mom about it. I think if I told my mom, she wouldn't be happy about it, but I could probably convince her that since I am an adult I can do this if I want. I'd also have to explain what stripping is and isn't. The only good thing about telling my mom would be that she would probably make sure that no one else in the family finds out.
