Default Saving money and going to school

Hello! I've been dancing for about a year and a half now. Half of the girls at the club own houses and nice cars ( I rent and have a 95 Camry ). Some of the girls at the club were talking shit about my older car and how I still rent. Though they have been working there for 5-7 yrs. I know I shouldn't let it bother me but It kinda got to me. I don't talk about finances with the girls I work with. I guess I just feel kinda like a loser since I don't plan on buying a house anytime soon! I'm 25 and starting nursing school at the end of the year. I usually work 2 sometimes 3 days a week and I've saved about 13,000 and I don't know if this is good or bad.

The biggest downfall you can have is to compare yourself to the other girls... your planning your future for after you finish dancing and thats whats important!

In my eyes your doing great

Saving money while having a clear cut plan for the next 5 years........ that's nothing to feel badly about. It's actually quite admirable.

Set your goals and stick to them. Don't be like me and set goals but never do half of them.

Lola, think of it this way ... the next time other dancers mention that they own houses and you don't, remind them that their real estate asset values are now probably 'losing money' while your rent payments stay the same !

Just because they have expensive cars and "own" their homes doesn't mean that they do. One dancer I was working with used to brag about how much money she made...and drove a massive Cadillac Escalante, owned a home in Park Ridge (it's a very expensive area outside of Chicago)...long story short, it turned out that she drove her daddy's Cadillac and she lived in Park Ridge, but her parents owned the house. Makes a big difference.

Never believe anything that people say to you. Also, you've saved $13,000...that's a nice little nest egg. Chances are, the other dancers are so busy spending their money they haven't saved a dime. So, let them talk. That's all it is.

I agree- I've been dancing/ going to school for about eight months now, and while I feel like I could've saved more, I know that I am a debt free student. That is a huge thing these days it seems.

And I agree- don't compare earnings with anyone! It'll just discourage you...haha, it seems whenever I think I've had a great weekend some other dancer will still manage to have outdone me. And then I think, god I thought *I* was banking. But it's true people like to exagerrate, plus it only matters what you have and what you are happy with. It's my opinion that it's only worth competing with the goals you set yourself.

Thanks for responding, you guys made me feel better! And I usually don't take things too personally with what people say. It's just that a few of the girls keep saying that since I don't have any debt and no kids, that I should work a lot more. And yeah, I guess I could work more but I just can't get myself to go to work more then 2 times a week!

Problem is these girls HAVE to work 5-6 days a week to make their $700 a month car payments and $2500 mortgage, not to mention their expensive insurance, etc... sometimes its better to rent then own. Always stressed to make their money at the end of the month to 'keep up with the Joneses'....

Whats the big deal with having a super nice car. Next time they say something about it just mention that because you have your Camry you are saving $XXX a month that theyre throwing away on their car so they can 'look cool'.

Its most likely a bunch of BS about owning homes... most dancers dont have the integrity to save and buy. I danced with a girl who raved about owning her home, brought in photos and I saw it. Later found out shes renting and paying her rent in the bedroom... not to mention the house has no furniture because she blows all her money the minute she gets it and works 6-7 days a week with lots of double shifts. Not all is as it seems sometimes...

Haha there is nothing wrong with liking nice stuff. I was just brought up to know when I can really afford it. Of course I've been eyeing the BMW 6 series but I can't afford it! A new Honda, that I can do!

I am going to schoo, rent, have a decent car, etc, and am saving money by not buying brand new cars or a home, because I am planning for my future in 4 years by graduating somewhat debt free (Still need those damned loans!). How long have these girls been dancing? 5 years? No, that is not for me, except maybe once-twice a week in the future once I graduate.

It is better to save money than to spend it.

In fact, spending money is the last thing you want to do with it. Think of it as being an "anorexic spender."

    Make your money an asset.

As you eye up that BMW, remember the words "secure financial future."

P.S. - My $50,000 BMW was wrecked in 10 seconds by an ex (ex not because of the car though - she was incredibly destructive in my life.) Anyhow: Poof! Gone.

The ones who really have $ are likely not the ones bragging about it. The ones with REAL assets know how hard it is to acquire them, and would never boast while putting others down...just like the customers who come in with their fancy suits acting pretentious, name dropping, etc.. It means nothing. And then you meet the customer who appears dirty and 'poor'... but is truly 'rich'.. one way or another...

    Fuck it

    $ really is so insignificant

keep doing what your doing... however, if you plan to live in this area for a while, it might be a good idea to buy a modest 2-3 bedroom house. I just recieved a birthday card from my dentist with"Then" and "now" in a nutshell, when I was born 20 years ago, a 3 bedroom house cost approx 62 grand, now they run 220 grand. Thats quadrupaling your money in 20 years. With renting, you'll pay more as cost of living rises. Not a bad way to make $$/ keep up with the cost of living. And, fast foreward to when your 76 or so... need money? Sell your house, and it should give you enough to rent and live for thenext 10 years.
