Default School Uniform - Tax Write Off?

At my school we have strict clothing rules. Tops must now show back, tummy or armpits. Bottoms must come below knee but can be skirt or capris/pants. MUST be black and/or white. Shoes must be black and/or white and closed toe. If its cold and your coat is cream colored you cannot wear it while clocked in for school. Only on lunch or 15 min breaks.

They do a dress code check every morning and if you dont pass you are sent home for the rest of the day. No going home to change. They are VERY strict.

I spent over $500 on clothes and shoes specifically for school because honestly I had NOTHING that met the criteria. NOTHING. And Im not exaggerating (sp?)

Anyway - was wondering if anyone knew if this could be used as a tax write-off since I HAD to have clothing meeting a specific criteria? Ive saved all receipts and such...

my gut feeling is NO, because these special clothes are not tied into an income producing business endeavor as say nurse's uniforms or carpenter's overalls or dancer's 'bunny' costumes would be. Perhaps they're deductible as an educational expense, but the IRS usually expects the documentation for college expenses to bear the name of the college i.e. bursar or bookstore.

i think that it is possible. YOu can get tax write offs for anything. Save the recipts! When you do your taxes, bring in the dress code policy info and see what happens.

I've already done my taxes this year, and i just found out that if I would have saved my recipts for parking every day ($8 a day 5 days a week) i could have used that as a tax write off. Also, if I were to have saved any of my recipts from any of the stuff I bought for the kitchen, I could have used those recipts as well, since it would be to "further my education at home"

    Its definately worth a try!

    ^ Cosmetology school.

LuciousLyzz...you can write off whatever you want. Doesn't mean that it's "legal" or "right" to do so...but you'll have time to think about it all while you're getting audited. Writing off kitchen stuff when you are not a caterer or chef is just like handing the IRS a can of anal lube and bending over...but to each her own!

AudreyLeigh, since your uniform is for educational purposes, it is not tax deductible. It will be when you begin working in a salon or what-not...but it's not at this point.
