Default I'm ready for a pet: Yorkshire Terrier

I'm just curious. Do any of you have a Yorkie? I've been considering purchasing one for a little over a year now. I've done alot of research, and I think that I'm finally ready. The only downside is they are just so freaking EXPENSIVE!

My old boss used to breed them. They pissed everywhere, they never shut up and they demand attention 24/7. Also their tounges are non stop lol. They are also super expensive and the upkeep is nuts on them. But damnit they are so cute

My vet experience with yorkies- they are adorable, but those little critters have some serious attitude. They are bred for it, like all terriers. Cute as they are, be prepared for some very trying puppy training. Be firm and consistent! But they are a good small breed.

I had an American Eskimo many years ago. Good lord...white fur EVERYWHERE. Not a great choice for someone whose entire wardrobe tends toward black. We've been looking into a dog as well, and there's a really great shelter near here that fosters their dogs out to families. We dogsat a friend's dog for a few months though, and we LOVED him. The good news (for us anyway) is that the dog has been all bummed out since he took him back and now he might just give him to us. Yorkie's are too small and yappy for my tastes, but they are cute. One of our babysitters has one named George she brings with her sometimes. The only other thing I would add is please please check out all your local shelters and foster groups before buying a new puppy. There's too many dogs out there that need homes as it is.

I swear to god they are bi-polar... One minute they are all cuddley and wanting to be held the next they are biting your hand off for touching them lmao... maybe it was just his. But they are super high energy dogs and very demanding. (refering to yorkies)

I have 2 yorkies both have the typical terrier personality = bark at everything. One is completely trained at 3 years old but it took 2 years to do so, and the other one is NOT trained at one year old. To me that is the only negative side is that they are slow learners, other than that they are sweethearts and i couldn`t imagine not having them!

I have an ex-GF that bought one of these for a $1K.

I absolutely detest dogs, but this was my favorite--it was small, usually quiet (except around women--it preferred men for some reason and would bark up a storm at women), and its dumps were about the size of my thumb. It weighs 2.5 pounds fully grown. What has been said above about training--particularly where they leave their messes--is important. Once they're trained, their habits aren't so bad...for dogs, anyway.

Be aware, that Yorkshire Terriers--if they're purebred--have chronically, irreversibly bad breath. It's just awful. It's sickening to watch people let any dog lick their face, but even moreso with these dogs.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

They are terriers - they were bred for ratting I believe (dammit, I wish Pamela was here to correct my dog lore). You can't just stick a bow in its hair and expect it to be a princess (surprisingly enough, what people tend to do). If they get enough exercise (which isn't hard - I mean, they aren't whippets) they are good. For yorkie cuteness without the yorkie overbreeding and the congenital bad teeth you could try a silky terrier.

They were bred for ratting as far as I remember. I think it was the way this guy raised his dogs though. He used to for breeding, and never once let them outside. They had a 'puppy pad' to do their buisness on(which they never did they just did it all over the house). He didnt want them outside. He was odd though... but god I loved them even with all their quirks lol.

Oh, my gosh, I'm not sure if you live downtown, but have you ever seen that guy walking around with that wheely-cart practically FILLED with pomeranians? It's like a pomeranian city in a wheeled cart. I think he must be a breeder because they are always puppies. It's appalling and incredibly cute at the same time.

Oh, Yorkies are soooo cute! Whatever you do though DON'T buy one from a pet shop. They come from puppy mills. Make sure you get one from a real breader that cares about the home that their pups go to. I'm sure they are high maintenance like Maltese (what I have) but I'm also sure they are 100% worth it!

My brother has a "Morkie." She is 3/4 Yorkie, 1/4 Maltese, at least that's what we were told. She is about 15 pounds so I think she might have something else in there. She is soooo playful and sweet so whatever breeding she has she's wonderful.

Yes,terriers were bred for ratting.Back in the old days, they had a serious problem with vermin tunneling underground and killing the crops as a result.Today, terriers fanciers will hold tunneling competitions.
