just another aspect of the de-facto $3000 cash transaction reporting requirements under the new Terrorist Anti-Money Laundering law/treaty ... and you can be sure that the IRS gets a copy.

A friend (a sex worker) who always pays her monthly Amex bill with USPS money orders was recently informed that Amex will no longer be accepting money orders - only personal checks or bank checks.

I recently paid two large credit card bills above $3K due to large auto repair bills for transmission work that was easier to pay with a credit card than cash with NO difficulty whatsoever. The highest balance those cards had ever seen before was less than half, ever. Furthermore, the transfer was done electronically. leaving a perfect paper trail, and to the largest bank card company in the country- Chase and an affiliate.

You can't just blame Bush - the democrats have been doing it also.

The most well known spokespeople for the democrats are a couple of comedians on a failing radio show.

The best they could come up with for a presidential candidate was a self-proclaimed war criminal.

And the democrats played as much a role in marching our jobs off shore as any republican has as well as importing guest workers (and illegal immigrants) to apply pressure to lower wages on jobs.

The two party system is corrupt and ineffective for the common person.

    We are fucked.

All this means to me is that it's going to be more difficult to conceal income from the IRS. But if you have all your ducks in a row, then it's a non-issue. Do strippers (and sex workers in general) think they shouldn't have to pay taxes?

OR... the black market starts to grow.

I see a lot of pawn shops with some pretty fancy stuff these days. Restaurants and grocery stores are still accepting cash.

You can stay off the grid - if your not eyeing up BMWs and shit. Make your investments outside of the US.

With a lot of bank credit cards (here, anyway), you can take cash to the bank's counter to pay the bill, no questions, no charges, no issues. Works for me on both a Visa and MasterCard I have. Not to want to take a money order sounds like a complete crock, and I just wouldn't want to deal with AmEx on account of that (already don't, since I find that the usefulness of their card is lower than that of the others, at least for what I do with these things).

That being said, it's possible that it has nothing to do with money laundering laws, and all to do with postal money orders being difficult for them to get value for or something - they probably have to negotiate them directly with the post office, and maybe can't just push them through the clearing system like everything else, or something like that.

    It's a bit scary.

I would not be terribly bothered by it personally, though, as long as they removed the interest retroactively that had been charged in between the date the money was sent in and the date it was cleared. If they charge the individual for that time, that pisses me off.

I like to try and use my AmEx instead of my MC. MC and Visa pretty much have the market locked up and I like the idea of there being "choice" between four major cards (AmEx,MC,Visa,Discovery).

That is a good point about clearing houses - I wonder just how automatic one can make the processing of postal orders.

I'm glad to see that some are sticking to the financial side of this econo-political subject, as we always try to do in Dollar Den. Yes this is the essential point that I took from this revelation as well. If you have your 'ducks in a row' in regard to reporting past income and paying taxes on that income, then the fact that the IRS and Homeland Security are automatically informed that you just made large credit card payments or made large purchases or transferred large amounts of money or purchased large dollar amounts of money orders are all 'explainable'. However, if your past tax history is a bit sketchy, then the IRS and Homeland Security may indeed start to add up the amounts involved in these automatic transaction reports, compare them to last year's tax return, and wonder how it's possible for you to be spending more money than you've been reporting as total earnings to the IRS !

I hate to upset a perfectly flowing political rant with economic facts, but ...

The two main 'culprits' causing the current budget deficit are Medicare/Medicaid, both of which were enacted as part of (or stem from) LBJ's 'Great Society' program initiative of the 1960's, ...

and a foreign trade imbalance with China ... for which the door was opened by Bill Clinton 'permanently' granting China 'most favored nation' status in 1993 - while at the same time enacting ever stricter and more expensive Union Labor rules/costs, EPA and OSHA compliance rules/costs, accepting huge court awards for product liability etc. here in the USA throughout the 90's. This eventually prompted many US manufacturers to start planning to close facilities and outsource or move their facilities out of the USA, which we're finally seeing happen on a large scale. However, the underlying changes in gov't regulations / court precedents which led to the corporate decisions which eventually led to the construction of new plants in China and then the closing of old plants in the USA were actually made years ago.

GWB was still going to frat parties and drilling oil wells when these fundamental forces for change were first set in motion. But just like the huge mass of the ship Titanic, it took a long time from the moment that the 'rudder' was turned, to the moment that the 'ship' actually started to change direction (which is arguably defined as the summer of 2000, with Bill Clinton still in office).

For the sake of accuracy I would also add that year over year education spending has NEVER been reduced. The 'spending cuts' reported in the media to which you refer are actually reduced rates of growth - i.e. if the DOEd asked for an 8% year over year increase in education spending, but the amount actually approved by congress and signed by GWB was only a 5% increase, the media called this a 3% 'spending cut' rather than the 5% increase which actually took place.

Why are you ruining a good thread with your political agenda? You already have a thread on that topic. Don't kill this good one with that old dead horse. Why bait people into becoming belligerent. Noooo!
