Default Why do they need to point it out?

So I'm reading the local news and the story is sad enough but what pisses me off is that they felt the need to point out that the woman was a former stripper. It has nothing to do with the events, the case, any of it. But hey! Why not mention it? Grrrrrrrrr.....

Police: Fla. Baby Dies In Car With Mother Passed Out Inside

    POSTED: 10:27 pm EST March 6, 2006

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A woman whose 4-month-old daughter died after being left in the back seat of a hot car while the woman was passed out in the vehicle was sentenced to five years in prison Monday.

Melisa Wildman, 30, pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter of a child. Circuit Judge Jorge Labarga also sentenced her to 15 years probation.

"Her reckless conduct clearly caused the death of her child," Assistant State Attorney Patrick McKamey told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "She needed to be punished."

Wildman, a former stripper, told police she had consumed Xanax, four or five beers, cocaine and marijuana, in a 12-hour period before the baby died in April 2004.A sheriff's officer and paramedics had found Wildman unconscious in her car just hours before her baby Savanna's death. Two passers-by roused Wildman and an officer let her drive away, though she had two outstanding warrants against her for failure to appear on two charges of driving with a suspended license. She later returned to her apartment and passed out again in the car with her baby in the back, police said. When Wildman woke up, the baby was dead, she allegedly told police. Two hours after her death, Savanna's temperature was 106.3 degrees, police said.

Wildman had been free on bail until September, when she tested positive for cocaine. Wildman faced up to 30 years behind bars if she had been convicted at trial.

Wildman's attorney Gary Ostrow did not immediately return an after-hours call seeking comment.

to further prove their case that strippers are drug-addled, irresponsible whores.

which in that case is mostly true.

    That's a HORRIBLE story!

But yeah, I don't think there was any reason to point out that she was a former stripper, the person who wrote it must have something against strippers.

Well, she's a "former" stripper, does that mean we are behaved until we quit?
I hate crap like that, focus on the crime not a former job... Why not say she worked at McDonald's in her teens? Maybe all the fat in fast food addled her mind.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

they did it to make the story appear "juicy" so the word STRIPPER would pop out to the readers.. it makes the story appear justifiable that strippers are irresponsible careless people which the majority of us aren't... thats too bad though that this woman did this to her innocent child.... lock her ass up.

Because we're horrible awful people who spend all of our times drugged out on everything we can get our hands on, and don't give a rats ass about our kids or family. Oh, and because no one that wasn't a stripper would EVER do such a thing....idiots.

I find this part the most disturbing.

And yes, the whole former stripper thing makes no sense, and has nothing to do with the news article. The report says nothing about what she currently did for a living.

I read all kinds of articles were the subject's occupation or previous occupation is provided. Simply google "former accident" and they pop-up all over the place.

So, I don't think it is that abnormal they reference "former stripper" in the story.

I wish there was more information provided for why the damn cops let her go when she was pulled over. I would like to know that more than to know she is a former stripper. The stripper part just adds more conflict to the story,,, in which the media use to attract people.

I hate that shit. They wouldn't have mentioned a thing if it had been "the woman was a former hairdresser" or "a former tax accountant". The way they've put it in that context makes it sound as it the fact that she's a stripper somehow justifies, no that's the wrong word.. explains, her actions.

"She passed out from taking drugs and her baby died!"
    "What!"
"Well, she did used to be a STRIPPER"
    "Oh, right, of course"

    ugh

I think it once again all boils down to what society views as "stereotypes". If someone listens to rap music they music be a "thug" and if someone is a stripper that must be a "cracked-out whore supporting her habit by having sex".

all i can say is that too many people have preconcieved notions about others before they even get to know anything about that person or job. the reporter was probably a mamas boy who had no experience in the real world and thoguht that the girl must of been fucked up from dancing... who knows what happened after? maybe some guy got pissed at her aand she was doing the drugs to excape??? too many what ifs to make her look like shit and every other girl like shit just cause they dance. if the asshole reporter ever reads this... learn a bit about life and then make remarks.

If she was a former congresswoman, they would have pointed that out too.

Eh, It's not the WORST thing in the world, but it's pretty sh*tty journalism when you need to try to shock people. I'm actually surprised the cops released that. In Boston you practically have to give your left arm to get details from a case even after a verdict's made. I miss FL

I hate this too. Sometimes it depresses me to know that if I were to die young or get famous I would indeed be referred to as "former stripper" which would overshadow all the other accomplishments in my life. Not that there's anything wrong with being a former stripper, it's just that when people hear that they can't seem to hear anything else.

Funny how when women have done good things they're never referred to as "former stripper" Like Maya Angelou for instance who openly admits it. Only when they're a public failure or part of something criminal is it mentioned.

That's what I'm wondering too,, it was irresponsible on the cops part to just let her go.
