U.S. Cigarette Sales Drop to Lowest Level Since 1951
    Thursday, March 09, 2006

WASHINGTON — The number of cigarettes sold in the United States in 2005 fell to the lowest level in 55 years largely due to enforcement of marketing restrictions imposed on the tobacco industry, the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) said on Wednesday.

According to federal tobacco tax figures, cigarettes sales slid 4.2 percent from 2004 levels in the largest one-year percentage decrease since 1999, the group said in a statement.

The attorneys general said 378 billion cigarettes were sold in the United States in 2005, the lowest number since 1951.

The drop continues an eight-year decline in cigarette smoking since the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) between U.S. states and the tobacco industry that settled state lawsuits over the costs of treating smoking-related illnesses, the NAAG said.

Overall, cigarette sales have plunged more than 21 percent since the agreement, which raised cigarette prices and severely restricted industry marketing practices, the organization said.

"It is not a coincidence that cigarette sales are down and fewer people are smoking. The Master Settlement Agreement was designed to protect the public and reduce cigarette consumption — and it does just that," said Vermont Attorney General Bill Sorrell.

The major companies that signed the MSA are Philip Morris, a unit of Altria Group Inc. (MO); R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings Inc. (RAI); British American Tobacco Plc's Brown & Williamson unit; and Lorillard, which trades as Carolina Group (CG) and is part of Loews Corp.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers cigarette smoking to be the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. About 440,000 people die each year from lung cancer and other diseases related to tobacco use.

Fastest growing cigarette market is young girls and young women. Still bad news there. "Hook 'em young."
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

i swear to god they should have inpatient programs for people trying to get off cigarettes just like they do for speed freaks and heroin junkies. hi my name is BG04 and i am a marlboro addict.

Oh,that can be right. That is how you spend harming your body every year you smoke. You could be using this money towards the down payment of a house, car or towards some type of investment.

    Lets see... $5 x 2 (twice a day) x 7 (days a week) x 52 (weeks a year) = $3,640.

Damn my habit is cheaper than cigarettes. Never knew that. And I don't even hurt my lungs much.

Then go to a non smoking tavern. Simple eh? If people had only done that instead of bloody bans economics would have worked things out nicely.

Oh well, I only smoke in private clubs anyway.

You have a high risk of mouth and throat cancer. I smoke just under a pack a day $28.78 for a carton of Marlboro lights.

    1 pack X 365 days x $28.78 / 10 pack to a carton = $1050.47

I would probably smoke at least an extra half a pack if I could take a smoke break at work or smoked in my home.

That article sounds like a good thing on the surface, but how dependent is government on the taxes from ciggarette sales, and how is that tax money used? (education or other public programs?)

The tabacco companies aren't losing any money because they have a bunch of developing nations with HUGE populations to market ciggarettes to.

The other bone of contention I have with the article is that the statistics cited are general. Dana Reeve died of lung cancer and she never smoked a day in her life. I also read another statistic that said only 4% of all tabacco smokers die before the age of 77 (average life expantancyin the US). I wish I had that info handy so I could reference it. I read a lot of science type websites and magazines.

When you really look at the subject of health, what do we really know? Medical science can fix exisiting problems, but for the most part we have no idea why one person gets sick and another doesn't. Why do some people with high cholerstoral live long healthy lives, and others with "healthy" levels of cholerstrol die of heart disease? No one knows.

Here's a question for science to answer: Is sugar good or bad for you? How about salt?

Again, we don't know. It seems recently that the answer to those questions are "it depends". Depends on what? We don't know that either.

    Okay, end of my semi-rant.

Great, start a non-smoking tavern and watch profits soar if non-smokers actually cared enough to come to a non-smoking tavern instead. Of course that would make sense... Rather than bitch to the government and cut into other people's rights/pleasure. But hey, when California put in a smoking ban ~2,000 business went bankrupt.... hmmm. Wonder what the market actually wants?

Then complain about litter, not smoking, for christs sake. Tired of seeing cigarette butts, but the empty potato chip bags and pizza boxes don't bother you?

^^ The cig butts are year round no matter the time of year. Anyone that has been to mission beach here knows that. Thats just part of the problem with smokers at the beach..they leave butts behind which are alot harder to see and clean up.

I'm all for everybody kicking the habit, much like I'm for everyone wearing their seat belt, BUT......

I detest the idea that government should be stepping in and telling us what to do with our own bodies and inside our own privately owned businesses. If someone owns a tavern or restaurant, they, and not the government should set the smoking policy for that establishment. If people (smokers and non-smokers alike) don't like the owners policy, they're free not to work or take their business there.

And while I understand the percentage of smokers in the general population is a dwindling minority, this is simply not the case in bars and nightclubs. I would estimate at least two-thirds of the people (both patrons and employees) in such places smoke. In strip clubs I'd say this number is more like three-fourths.

It should also be pointed out that the same time of emotional quack rhetoric used by do gooders to enact anti-smoking laws (like "secondhand smoke") is used by other do gooders to try to put strip clubs out of business (like "negative secondary effects").

So to you anti-smoking folks, be careful what you wish for.

God I wish, I guarantee I'd spend twice as much if I could enjoy a cigar in a strip club, not a chance of that happening in California though.
