    Stripper Pole Injuries?

Hey there ladies! My boyfriend's mom just got a stripper pole for her garage (central party zone) and wants to get a waiver of responsibility to those who come over to partake in the fun. The lawyer needs me to find out what the risks and injuries associated with the pole are. Can anyone help? Thanks a ton!

A waiver is a good idea, although I believe they're not legally binding if someone is absolutely determined to sue you. Injuries run a full gamut from scraping yourself on a rough part of the pole to falling from a height, and maybe even landing on your head. Waiver should at least cover bruises, abrasions, sprains, strains, and injuries to the head and spine.

You can't hurt yourself too much just dancing around the pole, but anyone climbing the pole or doing tricks should have some prior experience and/or somebody knowledgeable enough to spot them should be close by at all times.

I'm sure if you were upside down and fell wrong you could end up paralized. I'd assume the attorney could just make it a general waiver of liability on her part.

hm, it might be a good idea NOT to have any sort of waiver thing, because then you kind of DO take responsiblility by recognizing there is a risk. if you just leave it be (everything in the world can be POTENTIALLY hazardous) and install it correctly i think you've done enough. pole in a garage? sounds like a "play at your own risk -- moron" type of thing. just dont let anyone under 18 (or 12) mess around with it and let them be responsible for their own injuries. its not like you are a business establishment that needs insurance.

You can have swimming pool with a fence around it and no tresspassing signs and if someone gets injured in your pool they can sue you, I beleive the term is attractive nuisance. My trainer ws telling me this about horses in a pasture and if someone gets injured, same thing. It might be the same with a pole in the garage.

I would definately check with a lawyer or if she's that worried don't let anyone on it.

Severely burned the skin on my foot by climbing up the wrong way and causing too much friction between my foot and the pole.

My pole is in the bedroom and the floor is carpeted. Forget about the waiver of responsibility. I don't allow friends and family to use the pole without my supervision and only after I lay the ground rules of liability and possible injury. As a result, everyone that has come over admire the pole from a distance, no one has ever been stupid enough to try an unrehearsed stunt.

Does your mom know how to pole dance? It's not a toy and serious injuries can result from one wrong move. Since it will be in the garage, what will be used to cushion a fall on the pole? How closely will the use of this pole be monitored? I know the new rave is pole dancing, but it's an acquired art form.

A simple spin around the pole from someone who isn't used to holding their body weight or from someone who hasn't properly warmed up could result in injury. Falling off the pole is very common and if several people will be using the pole it may need to be cleaned between use. Where will your pole supplies be in relation to the pole? How will the pole be setup? Will kids have access to the pole?

There are a lot of things to consider especially since it's going in the garage. If it's setup as an inviting piece of equipment a lot of people will want to try it, that's not always a good idea. Good luck with whatever you decide...

Check out this link for a specially designed mat for poles called pole-o-mat.

Also make sure each person wipes the pole down before use to prevent sliding.
I fell 8 feet off the pole after flipping upside down cause the girl before me had oil on. I now have a pinched nerve in my neck that becomes quite painful every month or so.

i've developed tendonitis and hit my head once doing an inversion and not paying attention. as with any sport/physical activity, the list of potential injuries is extensive. it would probably be best to talk to an attorney with experience in that area if she is really concerned about liability.

I don't like to be contrary, but in my own opinion, I think this is just the opposite. I once worked for a nationally known cancer organization, in their fundraising department. For certain walk-a-thon-like events, we had participants sign a very basic "individual acknowledges that he/she is participating at his/her own risk" waiver from. While discussing it in the meeting, my boss (to my surprise) acknowledged that these were next-to-useless if someone was truly determined to sue us. The real purpose of the waivers was a psychological deterrent, as in, if someone was casually thinking about it, they would think, "Oh, but I did sign that waiver, that's right. Oh well." Evidently, the waivers work. (Why anyone would want to sue an organization devoted to fighting cancer, well, that's still a total mystery.)

Along with general bruising and the other things folks have mentioned, I think it's pretty easy to hurst your wrists and shoulders if you're not used to carrying your weight this way. And I definitely think pads are a very, very good idea! Hell, I'd like to have some for my own experiments with new tricks!
