Stopping child abuse images on the Internet

The Internet is a wonderful thing. It helps promote freedom of speech, information and communication. It is free and open to all. But because the Internet is not regulated, it is also easy to misuse. Websites of images of child sexual abuse and child pornography are widespread and this means child abuse continues.

We want you to join our petition and ensure the Government make internet service providers do all that they can to block access to abusive images of children, and to publish this information.
Please take a minute and let the Government know that you agree.

This is a terrible idea representing good intentions with severe potential consequences for all manner of information sharing across the internet.

Look up "the law of unintended consequences."

Child abuse is already illegal. It is already prosecuted.

This is merely the slippery slope to blocking all web sites that may be harmful to minors (like some would say stripperweb is given the gallery etc.)

With the efforts at that goal, all one would have to do is to report any child porn sites they come across to the authorities. I have never found one and I don't go looking. In fact it's dangerous to go looking and I'm sure most anyone would be disturbed if they did happen on one. I myself would be so angry that I would report it right on the spot.

Anyhow, how do you know that "Websites of images of child sexual abuse and child pornography are widespread". I've heard from news reports that this is mostly done thru peer-to-peer and email transfers, and so those are not websites.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

I signed, I have kids and even the thought of such images (internet, magazines, or video) makes me want to vomit.

for my reasearch paper in my junior year of high school i wrote about child abuse in all its forms and its legal history. if it wasn't for teh internet sites and books depecting in detail the wounds, mental trama, and even common disorders abused children end up with i wouldnt have been able to do squat for my paper.

if we do not educate people on things like child abuse we will only be allowing it to continue. and remember something more, abusers (mainly family members) really won't be searching the web for pics of other peoples abused kids; they don't really care all the much. now as far as pornography goes...governments are already working on quelling that problem; and that is a whole nother issue. child abuse will continue, with or without the internet.

The question isn't "is child abuse bad?"

The question posed on this petition is:

Is it OK for the government to require ISPs to block sites?

And if it is so, then who decides which sites get blocked? The Republicans(1)?
