    Default Vitamins and Nutrition

Here's the deal. I've been a vegetarian since I was fourteen. I've never been a stickler for eating healthy, and I think that five years later I am starting to see the effects. For the past two years, I've been living on my own and I don't really have time to sit down and make a proper meal. I usually cook up a boca burger or order a pizza.

Lately, though, I've noticed that my body looks terrible. My hair looks dull and thin, my gums look like they are receeding slightly, and I have discovered that I actually have some wrinkles. Not laugh lines, actual wrinkles at 19! It happens, I know, but I suddenly feel like my body is aging super fast on me.

I think part of it is probably malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies. So I am trying to get vitamins and get healthy again. I'm getting a bottle of the A-Zinc vitamins, but I wanted the opinions of you girls! What else should I get? What do you take?

You might find some help on this thread about vitamin regimens.

I'm a vegetarian too, but I'm watching what I eat and make sure that I get all my nutrients. Are you getting enough protein? That is the big concern with vegetarians. Are you ovo-lacto or full veg? Good alternate protein sources are cheese, yogurt, fortified soy milk, tofu, dark greens like spinach and kale, and protein bars. (I like detour heehee) You also might want to make sure you're getting enough iron (dark greens, dairy, consult nutrition information labels, they are your friends!) and b-12.

Don't just focus on popping pills, focus on your diet and lifestyle as well. Limiting drugs, smoking, drinking, and sun can have profound effects on how you look and feel. Ensure you get enough sleep every night. (as if I'm one to talk) Try to get the majority of the vitamins and nutrients you need from the food you eat, and supplement it with the vitamin pills.

Vite B12 is the most common deficiency in vegetarians, but without a balanced diet (vegi or otherwise) you could be deficient in all manner of things. A good multi is always a good idea, but you would be best served by improving your overall dietary habits. Unless you are doing it for religious/moral/ethical reasons, there is no reason for being a vegetarian anyway. It’s not what we were designed to eat, thus why we are omnivores.
