Default Dear Marketers, stop insulting my intellect.

Okay, so as a lucky sufferer of IBD, I was slightly intrigued by the commercial for Dannon's new yogurt, "Activia." Today, I checked it out at the grocery store and the active ingredient that supposedly "aids in regularity" is called "bifidus digestivium."

It sounded like a gimick to me, so I bought my regular yoplait yogurt instead, and came home to research Dannon's supposed new strain of live cultures. This is what I found:

    http://www.bifidusdigestivum.com/bifidusdigestivum.php

"The source of "bifidus" is probably from the intestinal bacteria bafidobacterium bifidum. "Digestivum is an invented word, which uses "digestive" as a root to suggest beneficial effects on digestion, combined with the latinate ending "um" to suggest a scientific derivation.... also known as "bifidus regularis" where regularis emphasises being "regular" and "is" suggesting a scientific derivation."

Basically, its the same cultures found in any yogurt. The lesson here : be a smart consumer -marketers are out to trick ya and take your money

The best thing in yogurt is acidophilis.

I can't believe that they "made" up a word, though.

Oh no! I saw that commercial today and was thinking that I might have to try that because it sounded like a great idea. I'm I guess the idiot consumer because I'd have just gone and bought the damn yogurt...hahaha! I can say though that when I take antiobiotics if I eat yogurt the antibiotics don't upset my stomach like normal so it must do something, but that's just regular yogurt.

I'm wondering if this will be looked at by the FDA in the future.

A few years back when I was working for B&G Foods, which markets the Polaner brand of fruit spreads, we started labeling them "GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) Free". This meaning that, since we didn't use corn syrup as a sweetener, it couldn't contain any genetically modified corn, which, back then, was a big issue for those who remember it.

We were forced by the FDA to remove those labels, at a huge expense, because they felt it suggested that other companies who did use corn syrup, potentially contained GMO's, thereby causing a slight panic.

I'm thinking that, by inventing this new word, they are fraudulantly claiming that their yogurt contains something that the others don't.

There should be truth in ALL labeling. This does not ring true to me.

I nearly died laughing when I heard it contained "bifidus regularis". I just kept saying that word all night long....it drove my bf insane. But it stuck in my head and I did buy some at the store on Sunday. Silly me.

That is precisely what they are doing. Why don't they just launch a campaign that emphasises yogurt's natural ability to aid in digestion? Similar to what the dairy industry did - pointing out that the consumption of low fat dairy products could potentially aid in weight loss. That is positive, and accurate. TG Lee didn't come out and say "our milk contains 'calciumate loseweightus', so you will lose more weight with it than with other brands!"

The sad truth is, however, if they had, consumers would be out there buying it by the cartful.

Dylan, I agree with your statement about the FDA. It irritates me that they regulate some things so stringently, but at the same time, let companies get away with crap like this.

Dannon uses pectin to give their yogurt come consistency after they water it down. It is not runny, but that pectin makes millions of little clots that I dislike cause its too much like grit. Most other brands are much better for me.

You'll note they don't advertise their use of pectin.

yeah, I saw this in an ad or something when it first came out. I about died laughing! so rediculous!

personally, I don't eat the main brands of yogurt. I only eat organic yogurt. Mainly because it tastes SOOO much better. It doesn't have all the sugar in it. plus the brown cow brand doesn't homoginize (yes they pasterize it though), so you get a layer of scrumptous cream at the top! YUUUMMMMM!! don't tell my kids, but I always swipe the cream off the top of theirs before I give it to them, hahaha

I agree but this goes way beyond truth in advertising. Marketing and advertising go about putting favorable spins on known facts.

For instance, if I wanted to sell a particular type of vinegar to a certain supermarket chain, I would pull up the research and sell through numbers for the summer period. Why? Because that's when people traditionally eat the most salads. The sales numbers could have been crappy for the rest of the year but you could still say "Brand X Vinegar has an 80% share of the market in NJ". What you're not seeing is the fine print on the bottom of my pretty chart is the time period (summer months) or the fact that there are only two vinegars distributed in that area.

See how you can spin it? But this to me is outrage. There is no way that other companies can compare to this because it's not a real ingredient...or at least not a known ingredient as labelled.

Ugh, this is one of the main reasons that I hate marketing as much as I love it.

Yeah, I worked for an advertising agency in Texas for a while, I didn't care for it much.

I never watch television so it is very amusing to me when I do, and see the ads--they are often much more fascinating than the inane drivel that passes for the 'real' show.

But I have to be in the right mood, because what you see if you never, ever watch television, is how much of it is commercial propaganda. Buy this car and you'll be a stud. Wear these clothes and you'll be popular.

The big network shows are paid for by the advertisers, and they aren't free--you pay for them every time you go to the grocery store and buy a brand name. They also reflect the wishes of the advertisers.

If I am in the right mood it is funny as all hell, except my friends think I am weird for laughing so hard at commercials, and bored with the sitcoms.

If I am in the wrong mood I am grossly insulted to see how little respect advertisers have for consumers, both in their endless attempts at manipulation, and in their perception that the ordinary viewer could be so phenomenally stupid as to believe this shit.

^^^Agreed...it can make you feel real dirty sometimes telling people they HAVE to have something when it's so obvious they don't really need it.
